Why an Authenticated Order Can Still Leave You Doubting

Vestiaire Collective built its name on authenticated luxury resale, and that reputation is why many buyers relax when the parcel arrives. The packaging looks right, the order came through Vestiaire, and a doubt feels like it must be your own mistake.

Sometimes it is. A genuine item can look different from what a buyer expected, especially a vintage piece. But it is also reasonable to question an item that has been through a check. Vestiaire's own help centre says that "no authentication process can be 100% accurate". It gives no rate, and we are not suggesting one. A check is a judgement made by people looking at an item, and you are allowed to look again.

This guide covers which check your order actually had, how to report a doubt, what evidence to send, and what to do if Vestiaire keeps its decision. It sits next to our Vestiaire Collective authentication review and our general guide to refunds for fake designer items.

Vestiaire's rules, windows and fees differ by country and change over time. What follows is what Vestiaire's help pages described when we checked in October 2026. Confirm the current terms in your account before you rely on any deadline.

First, Find Out Which Route Your Order Took

Vestiaire's help pages describe separate routes:

  • Authenticated Shipping. The seller sends the item to a Vestiaire authentication center, where it is verified in person before it is forwarded to you. The findings go into an Authentication & Quality Control Report, emailed and posted to the order timeline.
  • Direct Shipping. The seller posts the item straight to you. Vestiaire's Direct Shipping page says the order is sent "without being checked by Vestiaire Collective first". It is generally for items listed at about $1,000 or €1,000 or less, and some brands are not eligible.
  • Express Delivery. Vestiaire describes these items as already checked by its experts.

The help pages name the route "Authenticated Shipping". We did not find a page defining a separate "Authenticated" badge on a listing, so go by the shipping option on your order and any report in its timeline. If your parcel came straight from the seller, nobody at Vestiaire has handled the item. The question then is not why a check missed something. It is what to report, and by when.

What an Authentication Check Does and Does Not Settle

For orders that went through Authenticated Shipping, Vestiaire's pages say its authenticators physically review the item, covering (depending on the item) materials, typography, stitching, metal parts, engravings, serial numbers and documents. That is a serious check, but it is made at one moment, by people, against a list of points.

What you were shownWhat it can supportWhat it does not settle
Authenticated Shipping orderExperts reviewed the item in person before dispatchThat the review was right on every detail. Vestiaire says no process is 100% accurate
Authentication & Quality Control ReportWhich points were reviewed and how each was markedProof of authenticity. Vestiaire's Buyer Terms say its reports are not a certificate of authenticity
Quality control resultThe item matches or differs from its listingAuthenticity, which Vestiaire says is checked at an earlier step
Direct Shipping orderThe seller dispatched the item to youAny check by Vestiaire. The item is not checked first
Box, dust bag or cardThe seller had those itemsAnything about the item inside, since they are bought and sold separately

None of this suggests Vestiaire's team is careless. The word authenticated describes a process, not a guarantee about the item in your hands, and a doubt is a fair thing to raise. Be clear about what you doubt: that the item is counterfeit, or that a genuine item is not as listed. Those claims run through different routes with different windows.

Do This Before You Report

  • Stop using the item and keep everything. Box, dust bag, cards, tags and outer packaging. Leave any seal or label from Vestiaire in place and photograph the parcel as it arrived.
  • Screenshot the listing. Capture the photos, description, price, seller name and whether the seller is marked Professional, because windows differ by seller type.
  • Save the report. If an Authentication & Quality Control Report exists, download it and note which points it marked as met.
  • Keep messages inside Vestiaire, where it can see them, and do not relist or resell the item.

Red flag

Do not post the item to Vestiaire, the seller or anyone else until Vestiaire gives you a prepaid label and instructions for your case. A parcel sent on your own can leave you without the item and without a refund.

How to Report a Doubt to Vestiaire

Vestiaire's help page for buyers who are not sure an item is genuine gives the first step by route. For Direct Shipping, open My Orders (Me, then My Orders in the app), find the item and choose Report an issue. For Authenticated Shipping, use Vestiaire's Contact Us page. For an item that differs from its listing, Vestiaire asks you to describe the issue and upload photos, and says its team will reach out within 24 hours.

Worth knowing

These windows are not fully consistent across Vestiaire's pages. The safe reading is to report inside 72 hours if you can, and not to wait because a longer window might exist.

Name the detail you doubt, where it sits on the item and what you expected to see. A specific tell is easier to check than a report that says the item feels wrong. Vestiaire also notes that defects visible in the listing photos or mentioned in the description are treated as accepted.

What Happens After You Report

For an authenticity doubt, Vestiaire's page describes this sequence:

  • If the team thinks experts should check the item, it sends a prepaid label, free of charge.
  • You must ship the item within 7 days of receiving the label.
  • Vestiaire aims to check items within a maximum of 4 working days.
  • If the team has doubts, the order is cancelled and you receive a full refund including all fees, within 5 working days, or 24 hours for PayPal.
  • If the team has no doubt, the item is relisted on your account and you receive the proceeds of any sale minus the usual selling fee.

The fifth outcome matters. Vestiaire ties the refund to the team having doubt about the item, not to a proven counterfeit. But if the team has no doubt, you are left with an item you believed was wrong, relisted under your name. That is why the evidence you send matters before the re-check, not after it.

Evidence That Helps Your Case

Vestiaire's experts will examine the item again, so your report only needs to point them at the right places. Send:

  • Photos of the whole item, front, back, inside and base, in daylight.
  • Close-ups of each detail you believe is wrong, with a line on what it should look like.
  • The interior label, serial or date code, any heat stamp, and whatever came with the item.
  • Your listing screenshot and the Authentication & Quality Control Report, with the points you dispute marked.
  • A written opinion from an independent authenticator naming the inconsistent details, not just a verdict.

A code format that does not fit the year, hardware with the wrong engraving or a label font that differs from the brand's usual one gives a reviewer something to check. Our guides to Louis Vuitton date codes, Chanel serial numbers, Hermès date stamps, the Gucci bag and Prada serial numbers show which details to photograph. A good copy can pass several checks, so it helps to know what a superfake is and what still catches one. Do not rely on a code alone in either direction.

If what you can show is a mismatch with the listing, such as a different condition, size or colour, report it as not as described and say so. A precise claim you can document is better than a counterfeit claim you cannot.

If Vestiaire Upholds Its Decision

  • Reply with new evidence. The help pages we read describe no formal appeal step, so we cannot say how a second request is handled. Answer in the same case with the specific tells and an independent opinion, not a repeat of your first message. Whether Vestiaire accepts an outside document is its decision.
  • Ask your payment provider. Vestiaire's Buyer Terms do not mention chargebacks, and your card issuer or PayPal decides on its own rules, with strict deadlines from the charge date. PayPal and a card dispute generally cannot both be pursued. Our refund guide explains timing, what banks ask for and how to choose a route.
  • Know your statutory rights. The Buyer Terms refer to statutory warranty claims, with a two-year period from delivery for conformity defects. How far your rights reach depends on your country and on whether the seller is a professional, so check with a consumer advice service.
  • Do not destroy or resell the item until the case is finished.

On apps with no authentication step at all, see our guide to what to do after buying a fake on Vinted.

Getting an Independent Opinion

Every route above ends at the same question: can you show the item is not what the listing promised? Vestiaire's pages say its authentication services are performed independently by Vestiaire, and the pages we read do not say how its team treats an outside opinion. It still helps. It shows the reviewer which details to look at, and it gives your card issuer or PayPal a document from someone with no stake in the sale.

LuxeDetect issues a signed written statement on our letterhead for marketplace, PayPal and card disputes: a Statement of Non-Authenticity, a Statement of Condition, or a Not As Described statement. It costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. You upload clear photos and your receipt with the request; if the photos do not support the statement you asked for, we tell you and refund the $40. Vestiaire and your bank make their own decisions, so no statement can guarantee a result.

If you want a full verdict on the item first, you can authenticate it with photos and receive a Certificate of Authenticity, usually within 24 hours.

FAQ

Does Vestiaire Collective authenticate every item before it ships?

No. Vestiaire's help pages describe Authenticated Shipping, where the item goes to an authentication center first, and Direct Shipping, where the seller posts it straight to you without a Vestiaire check. Check which one your order used.

What does Vestiaire do if I report an item I think is fake?

Its help page says the team may send a prepaid label so its experts can check the item. If the team has doubts, the order is cancelled and refunded in full, including fees. If it has none, the item is relisted on your account.

How long do I have to report a doubt to Vestiaire?

The pages differ: any time after purchase, 72 hours from receiving a Direct Shipping order, and no 72-hour limit for counterfeits in the Buyer Terms. Report inside 72 hours if you can, and confirm your own window in the order screen.

Do I have to send the item back to get a refund?

For an authenticity doubt, Vestiaire's page describes sending the item to its team on a free prepaid label, within 7 days of receiving it. Never post anything until Vestiaire gives you instructions for your case.

What if Vestiaire says my item is authentic?

Its help page describes the item being relisted on your account. You can reply with specific new evidence, and if you paid by card or PayPal you can ask your payment provider. We cannot predict how either will decide.

Is a Vestiaire authentication report a certificate of authenticity?

No. Vestiaire's Buyer Terms say its Authentication & Quality Control Reports are not a certificate or proof of authenticity. They record what its team reviewed at the time.

Can I use a written statement in a Vestiaire dispute?

You can attach a third-party statement to your report or use it for a card or PayPal dispute. We cannot promise Vestiaire will accept it, and the decision is Vestiaire's. Our written statement costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours.
