Poshmark's Protection Is Real, but It Runs on a Short Clock
Poshmark protects buyers with a policy called Posh Protect. Its page says Poshmark will give a full refund if an item "never ships or does not match the listing description," and the problems that qualify include "Item is not authentic." The catch is time. You have a few days after delivery to open a case, and the order has an Accept button that releases payment to the seller. Once you have accepted the order, the page says, you will not be able to open a return case.
Poshmark also runs Posh Authenticate, which checks some high-value listings before they reach the buyer. Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify, so a designer item below that line is an ordinary peer-to-peer sale and the first inspection is yours, on the day the parcel arrives.
Poshmark's rules can change and may differ by market; we read the US and Canadian pages. What follows is what Poshmark's help pages and Terms described when we checked in October 2026. Confirm the current terms in your app before you rely on any deadline.
Do This Before You Accept the Order
Start on the day the parcel is delivered:
- Do not tap Accept. Accepting releases payment to the seller and, on Poshmark's own wording, closes the door on a return case.
- Check when the tracking says it was delivered. The clock runs from the delivery scan on the shipping label, not from the moment you open the parcel.
- Photograph the parcel and the unboxing, starting with the outer packaging and the label.
- Stop using the item and keep everything that came with it. Do not wear it or remove the tags. A claim is easier on an item in the condition it arrived in.
- Screenshot the listing now. Capture the title, every photo, the description (especially wording like "authentic"), the price and the seller's username. Listings can be edited or removed.
- Keep the conversation and payment inside Poshmark. The Posh Protect page says trades and offline transactions are not covered.
- Do not post the item anywhere on your own. Wait for the return instructions Poshmark gives you.
Worth knowing
The window is short and counted in hours. Poshmark's Posh Protect page gave 72 hours after delivery, as determined by the tracking on the shipping label, and elsewhere says 3 days. The Canadian page gave the same 72 hours. Do not assume a weekend adds time; the page does not say it does. Emailing Poshmark Support does not count, because the page says that does not qualify as opening a return case.
What Posh Protect and Posh Authenticate Cover
Posh Protect is a refund policy that applies to every order. Posh Authenticate is a physical check that applies only to listings carrying the "Authentication Included" badge.
| Question | Item without the badge | Item with the badge |
|---|---|---|
| Checked before it reaches you? | No. It ships from the seller to you | Yes. It goes to Poshmark's authentication facility first, then on to you |
| Covered by Posh Protect? | Yes | Yes. Poshmark says all orders are, including those that qualify for Posh Authenticate |
| Window to report a problem | 72 hours after delivery | The same |
| If authenticity cannot be confirmed | You open a case with photos | The order is cancelled and refunded before it reaches you |
Posh Protect's qualifying problems are undisclosed damage, an incorrect or missing item, item not as described, item is not authentic, and an order never shipped or received. It does not cover fit, change of mind, or trades and offline transactions.
How Posh Authenticate Works, and Where It Stops
According to Poshmark's Posh Authenticate page:
- Eligible items show an "Authentication Included" badge and cover select luxury brands and categories priced at $500 or higher. All categories qualify except electronics, home, pets, toys and games.
- After purchase the item goes to Poshmark's authentication facility, where experts examine details such as logos, tags and overall quality. Items from trusted independent partners ship directly to you once certified.
- Review usually takes 1 to 3 business days after the item reaches Poshmark, and the service is free for qualifying orders.
- If authenticity cannot be confirmed, the order is cancelled, you are refunded immediately, and the item goes back to the seller, who cannot relist it.
Worth knowing
A badge describes a process, not a guarantee. Poshmark's Terms say the program cannot provide an absolute guarantee of authenticity; it is a promise that the item passed the Posh Authenticate process. A badged item that arrives wrong is still covered by Posh Protect, and the pages we read describe no separate route, so use the same case and window. Because you would be questioning a check Poshmark itself made, specific evidence matters even more. Our [Poshmark authentication review](/blog/poshmark-authentication-review-is-it-safe) scores the program in full.
The Steps and the Timing
- Inspect the item against the listing on delivery day.
- Open the order in the app or on the website. Poshmark's help centre describes a path from your purchases to the order, then a Problems option and the not-as-described reason. Menu labels change, so follow your own screen.
- Pick the reason that fits and say in a sentence or two which details are wrong.
- Add supporting photos. The page asks for them and does not say how many or what they must show.
- Submit, then leave the order alone. While Poshmark reviews your case, do not accept it.
- If Poshmark approves the claim, it says it sends a new label to return the order to the seller where applicable, and refunds your payment.
| Moment | What Poshmark's page says |
|---|---|
| Carrier scans the parcel as delivered | The clock starts. Delivery is determined by the tracking information on the shipping label |
| Within 72 hours (also stated as 3 days) | Open a return case in the app or on the website, with supporting photos |
| You tap Accept | Payment is released to the seller and you cannot open a return case |
| No case opened within 3 days | Payment is released automatically. All sales are then final and Posh Protect gives no refunds |
| Case approved | Return the order within 5 days of approval to be eligible for the refund |
Red flag
Accept is a one-way button. A buyer who taps it after a quick look on delivery day has, on Poshmark's own wording, given up the case. "It looks fine" on the doorstep is not the same as having checked.
The page does not say whether you can add evidence after you submit, so put your strongest photos into the first submission and ask in the case thread whether more can be added.
Evidence That Holds Up in a Not-Authentic Case
Poshmark's page asks for "supporting photos" and says nothing more about what they must show. Because Posh Protect refunds an item that does not match the listing description, the most direct evidence ties what arrived to what the listing claimed.
- Whole-item photos. Front, back, inside and base, in daylight.
- Close-ups of each detail you believe is wrong, each with a line saying what the genuine version should look like. Logo lettering, hardware, stitching and edges are where copies usually slip.
- Labels, tags and codes. The care label, interior tag, date code or serial number. Brand rules are in our guides for Louis Vuitton date codes, Chanel serial numbers, Prada, the Gucci bag and the Coach bag.
- Listing against item. Place the seller's listing photos next to yours and mark what differs. Keep the listing wording too: "authentic" is a claim the item has to match.
- A written opinion from an independent authenticator naming the inconsistent details, not just a verdict.
A high-end counterfeit can pass several checks, which is why we explain what a superfake is and what still catches one. A specific failure is far stronger in a case than a general doubt.
Worth knowing
Do not rely on a code alone, in either direction. A plausible code does not prove an item is genuine, and some genuine items carry none.
If the Window Has Closed
Poshmark's page is blunt: once payment has been released, all sales are final and no refunds are provided under Posh Protect. You still have options, but none is guaranteed.
- Write to Poshmark Support anyway. The page promises nothing after release, so treat it as a request, not an entitlement. Send the specific tells and any independent opinion, not a repeat of "it is fake."
- Ask your card issuer. Poshmark's Terms say buyers pay Poshmark, which receives the payment on the seller's behalf, so the charge on your statement will be Poshmark's. In the US, a billing-error notice has to reach the issuer in writing within 60 days after the statement showing the charge, according to the CFPB and the FTC. Disputes over goods can run under other issuer and network rules, so call as soon as you know. Our guide to refunds for fake designer items covers chargeback timing and what banks ask for.
- Know the limit on Poshmark's side. Its Terms describe a Posh Protect refund as the buyer's sole remedy for an item found not authentic or not as described. That governs what you can claim from Poshmark; your issuer applies its own rules and makes its own decision.
- Report the listing. Poshmark's Terms prohibit selling counterfeit items, so report the listing and the seller.
- Keep the item. Do not destroy it or sell it on while any claim is open.
If a seller offers to sort it out by a payment app or a trade outside Poshmark, decline. The Posh Protect page says offline transactions are not covered.
Getting an Independent Opinion
Every route above ends at the same question: can you show the item is not what the listing promised? An opinion from someone with no stake in the sale carries more weight than your own photos, and it is the one piece of evidence that takes time to produce.
LuxeDetect issues a signed written statement on our letterhead for marketplace, PayPal and card disputes: a Statement of Non-Authenticity, a Statement of Condition, or a Not As Described statement. It costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. You upload clear photos and your receipt with the request; if the photos do not support the statement you asked for, we tell you and refund the $40. Poshmark and your bank make their own decisions, so no statement can guarantee a result. Poshmark's page asks only for supporting photos, so whether its case form or Support accepts a PDF is Poshmark's call.
If you want a full verdict on the item first, you can authenticate it with photos and receive a Certificate of Authenticity, usually within 24 hours. Order on delivery day, since the Poshmark window is short. Buying on another app? Our guide to fakes bought on Vinted covers its different process.
FAQ
How long do I have to report a fake on Poshmark?
Poshmark's Posh Protect page gives 72 hours after delivery, as determined by the shipping label's tracking, and says payment is released automatically if no case is opened within 3 days. Confirm the exact period in your app and act inside the shorter figure.
Will Poshmark refund me if I bought a fake?
It can. The Posh Protect page lists "Item is not authentic" among the qualifying problems, and says that if it verifies your claim it refunds your payment. The case has to be opened inside the window, with supporting photos, and Poshmark makes the call.
What if I already accepted the order and then found it was fake?
Poshmark's page says you cannot open a return case once you have accepted the order, and that after payment is released all sales are final. Write to Support with specific evidence, call your card issuer quickly if you paid by card, and report the listing.
Is an item with the Posh Authenticate badge guaranteed real?
No. Poshmark's Terms say the program cannot provide an absolute guarantee, only that the item passed the process, and Posh Protect still covers badged orders. Items below the $500 line, or without the badge, have no pre-delivery check at all.
Do I have to send a fake back to the seller on Poshmark?
Possibly. The Posh Protect page says a verified claim gets a new label to return the order to the seller where applicable, and that returns must ship within 5 days of approval to be eligible for a refund. It describes no exception for counterfeits. Follow your case instructions, photograph the item before it leaves and keep the tracking.
Can I do a chargeback for a fake bought on Poshmark?
You can ask your card issuer to dispute the charge, and it is the usual fallback once Poshmark's window has closed. The issuer decides the outcome, and in the US a written billing-error notice has to reach it within 60 days of the statement showing the charge.
What if I paid for the item outside Poshmark?
Poshmark's page says Posh Protect does not cover trades or transactions completed off the platform. Contact your bank or payment provider straight away and report the seller to Poshmark.
