Why Fakes Get Through on Vinted: The Receipt and the Box
Vinted has no authentication step for designer items. The listing photos, the seller's word and whatever paperwork comes with the item are all there is. That makes the paperwork do a lot of work, and it is the same paperwork every counterfeit seller knows how to supply: a box, a dust bag, a card, and a receipt.
This is the pattern we keep seeing in the items people send us after buying on Vinted. The fake is often not a good one. It would not survive a minute with an authenticator who handles the item. What got it through was not the quality of the copy. It was the box in the listing photos, which made the buyer comfortable, and the receipt the seller produced when asked, which made the platform comfortable.
Both are weak evidence. A box and a receipt describe a purchase. They say nothing about the item that arrived. If you have already bought something that feels wrong, this guide covers what to do in the first days, how Vinted's counterfeit process works, why a seller's paperwork can beat a buyer's complaint, and how to build a case that does not rest on paperwork.
Vinted's rules and windows differ by country and change over time. What follows is what Vinted's help pages described when we checked in October 2026. Confirm the current terms in your app before you rely on any deadline.
Do This Before You Open a Case
Start on the day you first doubt the item:
- Do not confirm the order is fine. Once an order completes, payment goes to the seller. Report the problem inside the order before that happens.
- Stop using the item. Do not wear it, carry it or remove the tags. A claim is easier to win on an item that is in the condition it arrived in.
- Keep everything that came with it. Box, dust bag, cards, receipt, tags, the outer packaging and the shipping label. Photograph the parcel as it arrived.
- Screenshot the listing and the chat. Capture the title, every photo, the description, the price and the seller's username. Keep all messages inside Vinted, where Vinted can see them.
- Do not send the item back on your own. A parcel posted before Vinted tells you to can leave you with no item and no refund.
- Do not accept a quick "I'll refund you" outside the app. Anything agreed off the platform is outside Vinted's protection.
Worth knowing
The window to report a problem after delivery is short on Vinted, counted in days rather than weeks. Vinted's US help centre gave 2 days after the item is marked as delivered when we last checked it in September 2026. Find the exact period for your country in your order screen and act inside it, even if you have not finished gathering evidence.
How Vinted Handles a Counterfeit Report
Vinted's help pages describe a process that runs through the order's "I have an issue" option:
- You report that you suspect the item is not authentic and send photos: the whole item, the parts that look wrong, the care label and any serial or code.
- Vinted asks the seller for proof of the item and where it came from. This is the step where receipts and boxes come in.
- Vinted may pause the order so payment is not released while it reviews. It describes replying within about 48 hours.
- If the evidence points clearly to a counterfeit, Vinted cancels the order and refunds you without asking you to send the item back. The refund is described as covering the item price, the Buyer Protection fee, the original shipping and any paid verification fee.
- If the evidence is not strong enough, Vinted treats the item as genuine, releases the payment to the seller, and you cannot return it through Vinted.
The second and last steps are the whole story. The outcome turns on whose evidence looks stronger, and a seller who can show a box and a receipt looks like a seller with proof.
Red flag
A buyer who says "it looks fake" and a seller who shows a receipt and a box is a contest the receipt usually wins on paper. Your case needs evidence about the item itself, not just doubts about the seller.
Buyers' reports on review sites are less tidy than the help pages. Some describe being asked to return a suspected fake at their own cost, or an order completing while a case was open. Those are individual accounts we cannot verify, but they are why you should read the instructions Vinted gives you on your own case closely and keep every reply in writing.
What a Receipt and a Box Do and Do Not Prove
| What the seller shows | What it can support | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Original-looking box | The seller has a box of that brand | That the item inside came from that box. Boxes, bags and cards are bought and sold separately, and a genuine box is easy to reuse |
| Dust bag and ribbon | The seller owns a dust bag | Anything about the item. Dust bags are among the cheapest things to copy or buy |
| Authenticity card or booklet | A card exists | That it belongs to this item. Many brands do not issue cards at all |
| Paper or PDF receipt | A purchase was recorded somewhere | That the receipt is real, is the seller's, or is for this item. A receipt can be edited, copied from another buyer or made from nothing |
| Screenshot of an order confirmation | A screenshot exists | A screenshot can be made to say anything and does not verify itself |
| "Bought it from a boutique" | A claim | Nothing, until it is documented and matches the item |
None of this means every box or receipt is false. Many are genuine, and a receipt that checks out against the item is useful. The point is the direction of the proof. Paperwork can be consistent with an item being real. It cannot make it real, and it cannot outweigh a physical tell on the item itself.
Check the Paperwork Against the Item
If the seller sent you a receipt or a box, use it as a list of claims to test, not as an answer:
- Dates. A receipt dated before the item's production year, or long after the date code on the item suggests, does not fit. Most brands encode a year or season in a stamp, label or code; our decoder tools and brand guides explain where.
- Description. Model, size, colour and material on the receipt should match the item exactly. A near match, such as the right bag in the wrong colour, is a mismatch.
- Box label. Where a box carries a label with a style or serial code, it should agree with the item's own tag. A genuine box with a code for a different product means the box and item were paired by the seller.
- Seller. A receipt with the seller's name on it makes sense for a purchase from the brand. A receipt with someone else's name, or none, only shows the item changed hands.
- How it reached you. A receipt that arrives only after you raise a concern, as an image rather than paper, is worth noting in your case.
Each mismatch is a fact you can put in front of Vinted. A single clean receipt is not a reason to stop checking.
Checks That Hold Up Where Paperwork Does Not
Paperwork is the part a seller controls. The item is the part they cannot change after it ships. Put your effort into the item:
- Logo and lettering. Letter shape, spacing and depth are among the first things a copy gets wrong. Photograph them straight on in daylight.
- Hardware. Weight, finish, engraving and how zips and clasps move.
- Stitching and edges. Even stitch length, clean corners, consistent edge paint.
- Interior labels and codes. Font, placement and whether the code format fits the brand and year. Brand-specific rules are in our guides for Louis Vuitton date codes, Chanel serial numbers, Prada, the Gucci bag and others.
- Materials. Smell, grain and feel against what the brand uses.
A high-end counterfeit can pass several of these, which is why we explain what a superfake is and what still catches one. A cheaper one usually fails at least one, and a specific failure, such as the wrong code format or the wrong hardware engraving, is far stronger in a dispute than a general feeling.
Worth knowing
Do not rely on a code or serial alone, in either direction. A code that looks plausible does not prove an item is genuine, and some genuine items do not carry one. Treat a code as one check among several.
What to Send Vinted
Make your report specific:
- Photos of the whole item, front, back, inside and base.
- Close-ups of each detail you believe is wrong, with a short line saying what it should look like.
- The care label, tags, serial or code, and any box or card that came with the item.
- Your screenshot of the listing, especially wording such as "authentic" or "genuine".
- A written opinion from an independent authenticator naming the inconsistent details, not just a verdict.
The fifth item is what separates a buyer's doubt from a document a reviewer can weigh against the seller's receipt.
If Vinted Decides Against You
A refusal is not always the end:
- Reply with new evidence. If Vinted's message allows a response, add the specific tells and any authenticator's opinion instead of repeating the original complaint.
- Ask your payment provider. If you paid by card, a chargeback is the fallback when the platform closes your case. Deadlines run from the charge date and are strict. Our guide to refunds for fake designer items explains chargeback timing, what banks ask for and how to choose between routes.
- Report the seller. Vinted removes listings and suspends accounts for counterfeit sales; reporting protects the next buyer.
- Do not destroy or resell the item. Keep it until the case is finished. Selling a counterfeit on, even without meaning to deceive, can create problems of your own.
Getting an Independent Opinion
Every route above ends at the same question: can you show the item is not what the listing promised? An opinion from someone with no stake in the sale carries more weight than your own photos and certainly more than a receipt.
LuxeDetect issues a signed written statement on our letterhead for marketplace, PayPal and card disputes: a Statement of Non-Authenticity, a Statement of Condition, or a Not As Described statement. It costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. You upload clear photos and your receipt with the request; if the photos do not support the statement you asked for, we tell you and refund the $40. Vinted and your bank make their own decisions, so no statement can guarantee a result, and whether Vinted accepts a third-party document in your case is Vinted's call.
If you have not bought yet, or want a full verdict on an item before you decide what to claim, you can authenticate it with photos and receive a Certificate of Authenticity, usually within 24 hours.
FAQ
Does Vinted authenticate designer items?
No. Vinted does not authenticate designer or luxury items as part of a normal sale. Buyer Protection is a dispute process after the item arrives, not a check before it ships. Our Vinted authentication review scores it in detail.
Will Vinted refund me if I bought a fake?
It can. Vinted's help pages say that where the evidence points clearly to a counterfeit it cancels the order and refunds you without a return. Where the evidence is weak it treats the item as genuine and pays the seller, so the strength of your evidence decides the outcome.
How long do I have to report a fake on Vinted?
The window is short and starts from delivery, counted in days. In September 2026 Vinted's US help centre gave 2 days after the item is marked delivered. Check your own country's period in the order screen and report inside it.
Does a receipt or box prove an item is real?
No. A receipt describes a purchase and a box describes packaging. Both are easy to copy, reuse or buy separately. They are useful only as claims to check against the item.
Do I need to send a counterfeit back to the seller?
Not if Vinted rules it clearly counterfeit; its pages say it refunds without a return. Never post anything back until Vinted gives you instructions for your case.
Can I use a written statement in a Vinted dispute?
You can attach a third-party statement to your evidence if the report or support chat accepts documents, and you can use it for a card chargeback if Vinted refuses. We cannot promise Vinted will accept it, and the decision is Vinted's.
What if I paid outside Vinted?
Payments made outside Vinted are outside its protection. Contact your bank or payment provider straight away and report the seller to Vinted.
