Why Depop Protection Depends on How You Paid
Depop does not authenticate designer items. Before you buy, the listing photos and the seller's word are all there is, which is why our Depop authentication review treats every higher-value listing as unverified. Once a fake arrives, what decides your options is not how good the copy is. It is how the payment was made.
Depop Protection, the app's buyer protection, applies to purchases checked out and paid for inside Depop. Depop's help pages warn buyers off paying outside the app: they name PayPal Friends and Family, bank transfers, Venmo and Cash App as methods to avoid, say a purchase made outside Depop is not eligible, and ask buyers to report any seller who asks for direct payment. Some sellers still ask. Whether you said yes decides which of two very different routes you are on.
Depop's rules, windows and menu names differ by country and change over time. What follows is what Depop's help pages described when we checked in October 2026. Confirm the current terms in your app before you rely on any deadline.
Do This Before You Open a Case
Start on the day you first doubt the item:
- Keep the item. Depop's help pages say you must hold on to it throughout a damaged or not-as-described claim, and that a refund is not guaranteed if it has been thrown away. Do not wear it or remove the tags.
- Keep everything that came with it. Packaging, labels, tags, cards, any receipt and the shipping label. Photograph the parcel as it arrived.
- Screenshot the listing and the chat. Capture every photo, the description, the price, any wording such as "authentic" and the seller's username. Keep your messages inside Depop's chat, where Depop can see them.
- Do not accept a refund or swap arranged outside the app. Anything settled off the platform is outside Depop Protection, and a promise to refund you later is not a refund.
- Do not post the item back on your own. Depop may ask for a tracked return, may refund without one, and for confirmed counterfeits its pages say a return may not be arranged at all. Wait for instructions inside your case.
Worth knowing
The clock is the part to watch. For orders paid through Depop Payments, Depop's help pages gave 30 days from the date of purchase to report an item that is significantly not as described. It counts from purchase, not delivery, so a slow parcel uses up days before you can inspect anything. Open the case inside the window even if your evidence is not complete, then keep adding to it. Vinted's window is far shorter; our [guide for Vinted buyers](/blog/bought-a-fake-on-vinted-what-to-do) covers it.
If You Paid Inside Depop
Depop Protection applies when you checked out on Depop and paid with Depop Payments: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna, according to the pages we saw. It is described as covering items that do not arrive, arrive damaged or are significantly not as described, and as protecting the full amount including shipping, fees and any applicable taxes or duties. When we checked it was available to buyers in the UK, US and Australia.
Counterfeit items are on Depop's own list of examples of "significantly not as described". The same list excludes smells, minor damage on second-hand or vintage items, and material that looks different from the photos, so build your report around authenticity, not wear.
The process, as the help pages described it:
- Open the order in the app and report that the item is not as described. Menu names change; follow the prompts.
- Choose the outcome you want, describe the problem and upload clear photos of the item you received. Depop says it needs them to handle the dispute and may be unable to refund without enough evidence.
- The seller is asked to respond and may offer another solution. You can accept it, or reject it and escalate to Depop Support. Reply to Support inside the time it asks for, or the claim can be closed.
- Depop may ask you to return the item. If so, the pages said to send it back with tracking within 7 days of the return being arranged and add the tracking to the case, or the case closes. Depop may instead refund you in full or in part without a return.
- Depop decides. Its pages say its decision on item disputes is final, describe Depop Protection as not an insurance policy, a warranty or a guarantee, and say it does not replace your rights under local consumer law.
Red flag
If the decision is final, the evidence in front of Depop when it decides is the evidence that counts. Upload your specific tells and any independent opinion as early as the app allows, and again in any reply to Support.
If You Paid Outside Depop
Paying the seller directly moves your claim out of Depop and into whatever your payment method offers:
| How you paid | Where the dispute goes | The main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Depop checkout (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna) | Depop, through the order in the app | About 30 days from purchase when we checked; Depop's decision is final |
| PayPal goods and services payment | PayPal's Resolution Center, not Depop's | In the US, PayPal asks you to open a Significantly Not as Described dispute within 30 days of delivery or 180 days of payment, whichever is sooner; you may be asked to return the item at your own cost |
| PayPal Friends and Family, Venmo, Cash App | No platform route; your payment provider | PayPal's program excludes personal payments, and Depop says purchases made outside the app are not eligible for Depop Protection |
| Bank transfer | Your bank, straight away | Not covered by Depop; recovery depends on your bank's rules |
| Cash or meeting in person | Local consumer rights, or the police if it was fraud | Depop Protection does not apply |
Depop's pages say purchases paid through PayPal are disputed with PayPal, not in Depop's Resolution Centre. PayPal's terms list an item "advertised as authentic but is not authentic (i.e. counterfeit)" as a Significantly Not as Described problem, and ask you to contact the seller before filing. These are PayPal's US terms; read the page for your country.
If you paid by a method with no protection, contact your bank or payment provider at once, because dispute deadlines run from the payment date. Then report the seller from their profile and the listing from the "..." menu on the item page. Depop's pages say you will not get a reply about a listing report, so it protects the next buyer; it is not a refund claim. Our guide to refunds for fake designer items covers chargebacks, bank routes and what banks ask for.
What Evidence Wins
Depop checks nothing before a sale, so in a dispute the seller can say the item is genuine and may offer paperwork. A box, a dust bag, a card and a receipt describe packaging and a purchase. They say nothing about the item that arrived, and all of them can be copied, reused or bought separately. Paperwork can be consistent with an item being real. It cannot make it real, and it cannot outweigh a physical tell on the item.
| Evidence | What it shows | Weight in a dispute |
|---|---|---|
| Close-up of a specific wrong detail (engraving, label font, code format) beside what it should look like | The item departs from the brand's standard | High, and higher with several together |
| Written opinion from an independent authenticator naming the inconsistent details | Someone with no stake in the sale reached the same view | High if it names details, low if it is a bare verdict |
| Screenshot of a listing saying "authentic" | What the seller promised | Supports a not-as-described claim; does not prove the item is wrong |
| Seller's receipt, box or card | A purchase or packaging existed | Low, because it says nothing about this item |
Put your effort into the item, which the seller cannot change after it ships:
- Logo, lettering and hardware. Letter shape, spacing and depth, plus the weight, finish and engraving of zips and clasps.
- Stitching and edges. Even stitch length, clean corners, consistent edge finish.
- Interior labels and codes. Font, placement and whether the format fits the brand and year. Brand rules are in our guides for Louis Vuitton date codes, Chanel serial numbers, Prada and the Gucci bag, and for streetwear and sneakers: Stone Island, Ralph Lauren and the Nike Dunk.
A high-end counterfeit can pass several of these, which is why we explain what a superfake is and what still catches one. A cheaper one usually fails at least one, and a specific failure is far stronger in a dispute than a general feeling.
Worth knowing
Do not rely on a code or serial alone, in either direction. A plausible code does not prove an item is genuine, and some genuine items, especially older or vintage ones, do not carry one. Age and wear are not signs of a fake either, and Depop excludes ordinary second-hand wear from its not-as-described cover.
When you report, send photos of the whole item (front, back, inside and base), close-ups of each wrong detail with a line on what it should look like, the care label and any code, your screenshots of the listing and chat, and a written opinion from an independent authenticator that names the inconsistent details, not just a verdict. That last item turns a buyer's doubt into a document a reviewer can weigh against whatever the seller shows.
If Depop Decides Against You
A refusal is not always the end:
- Reply with new evidence if Support allows it, adding the specific tells and any authenticator's opinion instead of repeating the complaint. Do not count on a second look.
- Ask your card provider or PayPal. If you paid by card, a chargeback is the fallback when the platform closes your case, and deadlines run from the charge date. A PayPal dispute runs separately from Depop's.
- Know your consumer rights. Depop's pages say Depop Protection does not replace your rights under local consumer law. What that means depends on your country, and we do not give legal advice.
- Do not destroy or resell the item. Keep it until every route you are using is finished.
Getting an Independent Opinion
Every route above ends at the same question: can you show the item is not what the listing promised? An opinion from someone with no stake in the sale carries more weight than your own photos, and far more than a receipt.
LuxeDetect issues a signed written statement on our letterhead for marketplace, PayPal and card disputes: a Statement of Non-Authenticity, a Statement of Condition, or a Not As Described statement. It costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. You upload clear photos and your receipt with the request; if the photos do not support the statement you asked for, we tell you and refund the $40. Depop, PayPal and your bank make their own decisions, so no statement can guarantee a result, and whether Depop accepts a third-party document in your case is Depop's call.
If you have not bought yet, or want a full verdict on an item before deciding what to claim, you can authenticate it with photos and receive a Certificate of Authenticity, usually within 24 hours.
FAQ
Does Depop refund you if you buy a fake?
It can, when you paid inside Depop. Depop's help pages list counterfeit items among the examples of "significantly not as described" under Depop Protection, and say the full purchase price, including shipping and fees, is protected once you qualify. Depop calls its decision on item disputes final, so the strength of your evidence matters. If you paid outside the app, Depop Protection does not apply.
How long do I have to report a fake on Depop?
For orders paid through Depop Payments, Depop's help pages gave 30 days from the date of purchase when we checked in October 2026. It counts from purchase, not delivery, so report as soon as the item arrives, and check the period for your country in the app.
Does Depop Protection cover payments made outside the app?
No. Depop's pages say purchases made outside the app, including PayPal Friends and Family, bank transfer, Venmo and Cash App payments, are not eligible. PayPal's own program also excludes personal payments. Contact your bank or payment provider straight away and report the seller to Depop.
Do I have to send a fake back to the seller on Depop?
Not always. Depop's pages say it may ask for a tracked return within 7 days of the return being arranged, may refund without one, and for confirmed counterfeits may not be able to arrange a return. Never post anything until Depop gives you instructions in your case.
How do I report a fake seller or listing on Depop?
Report the listing from the "..." menu on the item page and the seller from their profile. Depop says you will not hear back about a listing report, so a report is not a refund claim. Open the not-as-described case in your order to ask for your money back.
What if Depop rejects my claim?
Reply with specific new evidence if Support allows it, because Depop calls its decision final. If you paid by card, ask your card provider about a chargeback, which has deadlines running from the charge date. Our guide to refunds for fake designer items explains the timing.
Can I use a written statement in a Depop dispute?
You can attach a third-party statement to your evidence if the report or support chat accepts documents, and use it for a card chargeback or a PayPal dispute. We cannot promise Depop will accept it, and the decision is Depop's.
