Why Fakes Get Through on Mercari: The Clock Decides, Not the Item
Mercari is a general marketplace. Bags, trainers, watches and phones share one checkout, and nothing checks a designer item before it ships unless the seller chose Mercari Authenticate, an optional photo-based service covered below. For everything else, the buyer's protection is a return process that runs on a short clock.
That clock is the thing to understand. On Mercari an order completes when you rate it, or when Mercari rates it for you 72 hours after the carrier confirms delivery. Once an order is completed, Mercari's Refunds and Returns page says returns and refunds are not permitted. A buyer who feels uneasy and then gets busy, or taps the rating screen just to see what is there, can end the claim without knowing it.
So the first job with a suspected fake is not to gather proof. It is to stop the order from completing. Our Mercari authentication review scores the platform as a place to buy; this guide is for after a purchase has gone wrong.
Mercari's windows and wording change. What follows is what Mercari's help pages described when we checked in October 2026, including a Refunds and Returns page that showed an update date of 21 August 2026. Confirm the current terms in your app before you rely on any deadline.
Do This Before You Rate the Order
Start on the day you first doubt the item:
- Do not rate the order. Rating completes the order and releases payment to the seller. Mercari's own page says buyers concerned about authenticity should not rate the transaction and should request a return instead.
- Start from the order, not from a message. Mercari says return requests must be made through the Order Status page or the Rating page, and that requests made anywhere else do not pause the transaction and may not be reviewed. A message to the seller does not stop the clock.
- Stop using the item. Mercari says returned items must be unworn, unwashed, unmodified and have all original tags attached.
- Photograph everything before it leaves your hands. The return described on Mercari's pages ships the item away, so your photos become the only record you control.
- Screenshot the listing and keep the chat in the app. Mercari's safety guidelines say it protects only payments made through its app or site.
- Do not post anything back on your own. Wait until Mercari approves a return and gives you its label.
Worth knowing
The window is short and counted in hours. Mercari's Refunds and Returns page gave 72 hours from delivery, measured by the carrier's timestamp, with the request made before the order completes. That is the carrier's delivery scan, not the moment you open the parcel. Its Buyer Protection page adds that if you need more time to verify the purchase, you can contact Mercari inside the same window. Find the exact period in your order screen and act inside it, even if your evidence is unfinished.
How Mercari Handles a Counterfeit Report
Mercari's Refunds and Returns page lists "item is inauthentic/counterfeit" as a reason a return can be considered, alongside items significantly not as described and items damaged in shipping. In outline:
- You request a return from the order's status page, with clear photos of what is wrong. Mercari may ask for more information, and you have 24 hours from its request to send it.
- If more time is needed, Mercari says the automatic rating may be paused during its investigation, and that Customer Support can extend the rating period to allow time for authentication. Ask for this in writing if your 72 hours are running out.
- If the return is approved, Mercari provides a prepaid label for items up to 50 lb. You drop the parcel off within about three days, and a return that misses its timelines may be voided. Once the return is confirmed, the refund goes to your original payment method, processed within 14 calendar days.
| Stage | What Mercari's pages describe | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier confirms delivery | The 72-hour clock starts | Count from the tracking scan, not from opening the parcel |
| You request a return | Made through the Order Status or Rating page, with photos | This protects the order. Do it first |
| 72 hours pass with no action | Mercari rates the order automatically | The order completes and returns stop |
| You rate the order | The order completes and payment goes to the seller | A return can no longer be requested |
| Return approved | Prepaid label, drop off in about three days | The item leaves your hands. Photograph it first |
| Return confirmed | Refund to the original payment method, up to 14 calendar days | Compare the amount with what you paid |
Red flag
Rating the order and doing nothing for 72 hours have the same result. Both complete the order. Never rate "to see if the seller responds", and do not wait for the seller's reply before opening the return.
Two limits are worth knowing. Mercari has the final say: its page says it reserves the right to refuse return requests and deny refunds. And its pages describe a return on a prepaid label with no separate route where a counterfeit is refunded without being sent back, so plan for the item to leave your hands. The Buyer Protection page promises "a full refund for eligible returns" but does not say whether the 3.6% Buyer Protection fee and original shipping are included, so check the refunded amount.
Windows differ between apps. For a platform with a much shorter clock, see what to do after buying a fake on Vinted.
What the Authenticate Badge Does and Does Not Prove
Mercari's help pages say Authenticate is an optional feature in which a third party, Real Authentication, evaluates photos of an item. The listed categories are handbags, wallets, eyewear, jewelry, watches and designer shoes. Passing items carry a diamond badge, and eligible categories also get a certificate with a QR code (not jewelry or watches). Sellers pay a fee, listed as $5 plus $10 for a certificate when we checked.
Price links to it. Mercari's price-limit page says purchases and listings are usually capped at $2,000, with authenticated items in the listed categories allowed up to $5,000 after an extra identity check, and designer items above a category- and brand-specific amount need authentication photos.
The badge is a photo opinion, and Mercari's own Authenticate terms state its limits: Mercari does not represent, warrant or guarantee that an item is authentic, offers no money-back guarantee regardless of the authenticator's determination, and neither Mercari nor the authenticator takes possession of the item.
| What the listing shows | What it can support | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond badge or certificate | An authenticator reviewed photos and passed them | That the item in your hands is the item in those photos. No one handled it, and Mercari does not guarantee the result |
| "Authentic" in the description | A claim by the seller | Proof. Mercari's guidelines say an item sold as authentic without proof may be treated as "not as described", which helps your request |
| Receipt, date code or serial number | Mercari says brand-name items should have these available when listed | That a receipt is real or belongs to this item. Receipts can be edited and codes copied |
| High seller rating | Past buyers were satisfied | Anything about this item. Mercari says the badge does not mean the seller is verified |
A badge does not change what you do. The pages we read do not say authenticated items are excluded from the counterfeit return reason, so request the return inside the same window.
Evidence That Wins
Mercari asks for clear photos showing how the item is significantly different from the listing. For a suspected counterfeit, that means specific tells:
- Listing against item. Hardware, stitching, labels or colour that differ from the listing photos are a "significantly not as described" fact, whoever made the item.
- Logo, hardware and stitching. Letter shape and spacing, engraving, how zips move, stitch length and clean corners. Photograph them straight on in daylight.
- Interior labels and codes. Font, placement and whether the code format fits the brand and year. Rules are in our guides for Louis Vuitton date codes, Chanel serial numbers, Prada, the Gucci bag and others.
A high-end counterfeit can pass several of these, which is why we explain what a superfake is and what still catches one. A cheaper one usually fails at least one, and a specific failure is far stronger in a dispute than a general doubt. Do not rely on a code alone in either direction. You can also ask the seller in the app for the receipt or serial number; the reply, or its absence, joins your record. Do not wait for it before opening the return.
What to Send Mercari
- Photos of the whole item: front, back, inside and base.
- Close-ups of each detail you believe is wrong, with a short line saying what it should look like.
- The care label, tags, serial or code, and the listing screenshots, especially wording such as "authentic".
- A written opinion from an independent authenticator naming the inconsistent details, not just a verdict.
The last item turns a buyer's doubt into a document a reviewer can weigh. Answer any Mercari request inside its 24-hour limit, even if all you can say is that more evidence is coming.
If You Already Rated or the Window Closed
Mercari's pages do not soften this. The Refunds and Returns page says that if a buyer has rated the item, or has not requested a return within 72 hours, a return will not be permitted and a refund will not be issued. The Buyer Protection page says that once payment has been released, all sales are final. We found nothing promising to reopen a completed order. You still have options:
- Contact Mercari in the in-app Help Center anyway. Include your timeline, the carrier scan time and screenshots. It is worth asking if the delivery scan came before the parcel arrived, or if the order completed while a request was open. The decision is Mercari's alone.
- Report the listing with the Report link on the item page. Mercari prohibits counterfeit goods and can remove listings.
- Keep the item. Do not resell it or throw it away while a dispute is open.
- Go to your card issuer, as below.
Escalating to Your Card Issuer
If you paid through Mercari's checkout by card, a chargeback is the fallback when Mercari refuses or the window has closed. Deadlines run from the charge date and are strict, so note the payment date on day one. Our guide to refunds for fake designer items explains chargeback timing, what banks ask for and how to choose between routes. Banks generally expect proof of a counterfeit to come from someone other than you.
If you paid outside Mercari, for example by transfer after the seller moved the chat off the app, Mercari says it does not protect those transactions. Contact your bank or payment provider straight away.
Getting an Independent Opinion Before the Item Leaves Your Hands
Every route above ends at the same question: can you show the item is not what the listing promised? An opinion from someone with no stake in the sale carries more weight than your own photos.
LuxeDetect issues a signed written statement on our letterhead for marketplace, PayPal and card disputes: a Statement of Non-Authenticity, a Statement of Condition, or a Not As Described statement. It costs $40 and arrives as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. You upload clear photos and your receipt with the request; if the photos do not support the statement you asked for, we tell you and refund the $40. Mercari and your bank make their own decisions, so no statement can guarantee a result, and whether Mercari accepts a third-party document is Mercari's call.
On timing, open the return request first, then order the statement the same day. It is based on your photos, so it can be done before you ship the item back. To check an item before you decide what to claim, you can authenticate it with photos and receive a Certificate of Authenticity, usually within 24 hours.
FAQ
Does Mercari authenticate designer items?
Not as a standard step. Mercari Authenticate is optional and photo-based, run by a third party for categories such as handbags, watches and designer shoes, and Mercari asks for it on some high-priced designer listings. Most listings have no check before shipping.
How long do I have to report a fake on Mercari?
Mercari's Refunds and Returns page gave 72 hours from delivery, measured by the carrier's timestamp, with the request made before the order completes. Check the exact period in your order screen and act inside it.
Will Mercari refund me if I bought a fake?
It can. Mercari lists an inauthentic or counterfeit item as a reason a return can be considered. If approved, you ship the item back on a prepaid label and the refund goes to your original payment method once the return is confirmed. Mercari decides and can refuse a request, so your evidence matters.
What happens if I already rated the seller?
Mercari's pages say that once a buyer has rated the order, a return will not be permitted and a refund will not be issued. You can still contact Mercari, report the listing and, if you paid by card, ask your card issuer about a dispute.
Do I have to send a counterfeit back to the seller?
Mercari's pages describe a prepaid return label and no route that refunds a counterfeit without a return. Never post anything until Mercari approves the return, and photograph the item in full first.
Is an item with the Mercari Authenticate badge guaranteed real?
No. Mercari's Authenticate terms say it does not guarantee that an item is authentic and does not offer a money-back guarantee regardless of the authenticator's determination. The check is based on photos. If what arrives looks wrong, request the return inside the normal window.
Can I use a written statement in a Mercari dispute?
You can include one as evidence where Mercari accepts documents, and you can use it for a card chargeback if Mercari refuses. We cannot promise Mercari will accept it; the decision is Mercari's.
