Ralph Lauren Authentication Guide: What Genuine Polo Shirts and Ricky Bags Look Like

Fake Ralph Lauren rarely fails on the logo: the counterfeits we have reviewed copied the pony, the collar label, the RN number and even the Ricky bag's engraved lock. Here is what genuine Polo shirts and Ricky bags look like, and which details only tell you the format is right.

What Makes Ralph Lauren Distinctive

Ralph Lauren is not one label but a family of them. Polo Ralph Lauren makes the polo shirts, oxford shirts and chinos most people picture. Lauren Ralph Lauren is the lower-priced line sold in department stores, with its own green labels and RLL hardware. Purple Label is the tailoring line, Double RL (RRL) the workwear and denim line, and Ralph Lauren Collection the runway line that includes the Ricky bag. Each line has its own labels, its own price level and its own factories. A lot of "is this fake?" questions turn out to be a genuine item from a line the buyer did not expect.

LuxeDetect's archive holds well over a thousand authenticated Ralph Lauren orders: clothing and handbags in roughly equal depth, plus shoes and accessories. That depth shows two things clearly. First, genuine Ralph Lauren is consistent within each line: the same collar label layout, the same care-tag format, the same engraved Ricky hardware, season after season. Second, the counterfeits we reviewed copied those same details closely. On Ralph Lauren the logo is almost never what gives a fake away.

Worth knowing

This guide is built from confirmed-genuine Ralph Lauren orders in our archive. We also reviewed the confirmed fakes alongside them, and found no single detail that showed up again and again on fakes and never on genuine pieces. Rather than publish a real-vs-fake table the evidence cannot support, this guide shows what genuine construction looks like, and says plainly where fakes have caught up. We will add a comparison when a repeatable tell holds up across several independent fakes of the same model.

Polo Shirts: The Collar Label

Genuine current Polo Ralph Lauren collar label: navy woven label with gold POLO / RALPH LAUREN lettering, a separate CLASSIC FIT tab below it and a size and country tab sewn beside it
Genuine current Polo Ralph Lauren collar label: navy woven label with gold POLO / RALPH LAUREN lettering, a separate CLASSIC FIT tab below it and a size and country tab sewn beside it

Current Polo Ralph Lauren shirts carry a navy woven collar label with "POLO" above "RALPH LAUREN" in gold serif capitals. Below it sits a small separate fit tab (Classic Fit, Custom Slim Fit or Slim Fit), and beside it a size tab that also gives the size in other markets and the country of manufacture. On the genuine shirts we reviewed the weave was dense, the letters evenly spaced and fully formed, and the three tabs were sewn straight and level with each other.

The fit tab matters because it should match the cut. A Classic Fit is roomy through the body; a Custom Slim Fit is visibly narrower. A mismatch between tab and cut is worth a closer look, though genuine shirts do get re-sized and re-labelled in the resale chain.

Worth knowing

The fake polo shirts we reviewed used this current label layout too, fit tab and size tab included, and some came with paper hang tags and supplier stickers. A correct-looking collar label tells you the format is right, not that the shirt is genuine.

Polo Shirts: The Pony Embroidery

The embroidered polo player sits on the left chest of most shirts. On genuine shirts the rider, the raised mallet, the horse's head and all four legs read as separate shapes even at the small size, the stitching is dense with no piqué showing through, and the back of the embroidery is neat. The pony comes in many colours, including multicolour versions, and in several sizes: the standard small pony, the Big Pony with a number on the sleeve, and larger chest logos on some seasonal pieces. All of these are genuine designs.

The Big Pony range is one of the most copied Ralph Lauren designs on the resale market, and several of the fake shirts in our archive used it. That does not make Big Pony shirts suspect; it means a Big Pony shirt deserves the same full check as any other.

Polo Shirts: The Care Label and the RN Number

Genuine Polo Ralph Lauren side-seam care label: country of manufacture in four languages, then body fibre content in many languages
Genuine Polo Ralph Lauren side-seam care label: country of manufacture in four languages, then body fibre content in many languages

Current genuine shirts have a long white care label in the left side seam. It starts with the country of manufacture in several languages, then the fibre content in a long multilingual list, then washing symbols. Genuine Ralph Lauren clothing is made in many countries: the genuine pieces we reviewed included China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nicaragua and Macau, and fakes name the same kinds of countries. The country on the label is not a tell.

Many Ralph Lauren labels also carry RN 41381, the US registration number for Ralph Lauren. It confirms which company a genuine label is registered to, but it is printed on fakes as well: several confirmed fakes in our archive carried it, from a Polo shirt to a Purple Label sweater to a handbag. Older and licensed pieces can carry other numbers, so check an unfamiliar RN against the rest of the item rather than treating it as a verdict.

Older "Polo by Ralph Lauren" Labels

Older shirts, chinos and knitwear, made before the current label took over, carry the older navy label: "Polo" in a boxed outline above "by Ralph Lauren" in a lighter script, often with a separate fibre tab. Genuine vintage pieces with this label are common in the resale market and are not suspect because the label looks old-fashioned. What should match is the era of everything else: a vintage label on a shirt with a current-style long multilingual care tag and a current fit tab is worth asking about.

The Ricky Bag: Lock Plate and Cylinder

The Ricky, named after Ralph Lauren's wife Ricky, is the Collection line's signature handbag, and the leather versions we reviewed were all marked made in Italy. Its round lock plate is the detail most buyers check first. On genuine bags the polished plate is held by screws at the edge, "RALPH LAUREN" is engraved in spaced capitals around its lower curve, and the key cylinder is engraved with "67" above an R and an L (Ralph Lauren dates the company to 1967). The Soft Ricky uses a leather-covered version of the same round plate, with the engraving pressed into the leather.

Worth knowing

The counterfeit Ricky bags in our archive copied this plate closely: the screws, the 67 / R L cylinder and the edge engraving were all there, including on Soft Ricky fakes. A correct lock plate is the expected format, not evidence that the bag is genuine.

The Ricky Bag: Interior Plate and Heat Stamp

Genuine Soft Ricky interior: oval metal plate engraved RALPH LAUREN / MADE IN ITALY with a screw at each end, set into stitched black leather

Inside, genuine Ricky bags carry an oval metal plate engraved "RALPH LAUREN" over "MADE IN ITALY", with a screw at each end, set into a stitched leather surround. Some versions use a plate with "RALPH LAUREN" only, and the canvas Rickys we reviewed used a smaller plate set into a leather patch. Below the top edge on the inside there is usually a foil heat stamp with the same two lines.

On the genuine bags we reviewed the heat stamp was sharp, level and evenly filled. Several genuine Rickys we reviewed also had a small leather tab inside, stamped with three lines that include a date and season. The fakes in our archive had the oval plate and the heat stamp as well, so treat both as format checks, not proof.

The Ricky Bag: Leather Patches and Tags

Some Ricky styles, especially the canvas and vachetta versions, carry a leather interior patch or luggage tag debossed with "Ralph Lauren" in script, finished with thick, evenly spaced saddle stitching. In hand, look at the leather itself: genuine Collection leather should be thick, supple and evenly finished, with smoothly painted edges. Photos rarely show this well, which is why a Ricky that looks right in pictures still needs a close inspection.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Bags Are a Different Line

Lauren Ralph Lauren bags are not Ricky bags and should not be judged against them. The genuine Lauren bags we reviewed used RLL monogram hardware, script "Lauren / Ralph Lauren" plates, leather luggage-tag fobs, and a green fabric composition tag inside listing the materials in several languages, usually with "Made in China". All of this is normal for the line. A Lauren bag "made in China" with gold-tone RLL hardware is what the genuine product looks like.

General Red Flags Across Ralph Lauren's Market

Some patterns are well known across the resale market generally, rather than shown by this guide's photos: a pony with merged legs or a shapeless rider, embroidery so thin the fabric shows through, labels that are crooked or frayed on an otherwise new shirt, a "Collection" or Ricky bag priced far below the resale level for that model, and bundles of identical "new with tags" shirts in every size from one seller. Treat these as reasons to look closer, never as a verdict on their own. The most useful check is consistency: the line, the label era, the fit tab, the care tag and the item itself should all tell the same story.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

Because the counterfeits we reviewed got the logos, labels, RN number and Ricky hardware right, a Ralph Lauren verdict from resale photos alone often comes down to fabric, leather, stitching and how the details sit together, which are hard to judge without a trained eye and side-by-side references. If the item is worth more than a small sum, or if you are buying a Ricky bag, have it checked before you pay. LuxeDetect's clothing authentication starts at $15 and handbag authentication at $25 for a 24-hour verdict, with faster options, and every genuine verdict includes a Certificate of Authenticity.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

FAQ

How can I tell if a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt is real?

Check that the collar label, fit tab, size tab, care label and pony all belong to the same era and line, and that the embroidery and stitching are dense and neat. No single detail settles it: the fakes we reviewed copied the current label layout and the pony closely, so a professional check is the reliable answer for a shirt that matters to you.

Does "Made in China" mean my Ralph Lauren is fake?

No. Genuine Ralph Lauren clothing is made in many countries, including China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nicaragua and Macau, and Lauren Ralph Lauren bags are commonly made in China. Ricky bags are a different case: the genuine leather Rickys we reviewed were made in Italy.

What does RN 41381 mean on a Ralph Lauren label?

RN 41381 is the US registration number for Ralph Lauren, printed on many genuine labels. It does not prove an item is genuine, because counterfeiters print it too: we have read it on several confirmed fakes.

What is the "Polo by Ralph Lauren" label?

It is the older Polo label, a navy woven label with "Polo" in a box above "by Ralph Lauren" in script, used on shirts, chinos and knitwear before the current "POLO / RALPH LAUREN" label. Genuine vintage pieces with it are common; just check that the care tag and other details belong to the same era.

How do I authenticate a Ralph Lauren Ricky bag?

Look at the whole bag, not just the lock: the round plate with the 67 / R L cylinder, the oval interior plate, the heat stamp, the interior tab, the leather quality and the edge painting. Fakes copy the engraved hardware closely, so the leather and construction carry most of the weight, and a professional check is worth it at Ricky prices.

Is Lauren Ralph Lauren fake Ralph Lauren?

No. Lauren Ralph Lauren is Ralph Lauren's own lower-priced line, with green labels, RLL hardware and mostly Asian manufacturing. Judge a Lauren bag against genuine Lauren bags, not against a Ricky or Polo piece.

Why doesn't this guide have a real-vs-fake comparison table?

Because we could not find a detail that showed up repeatedly on the Ralph Lauren fakes in our archive and never on genuine pieces. The fakes copied labels, RN numbers and Ricky hardware well. We would rather show genuine construction honestly than publish a table the evidence does not support.
