The Speedy: Why It Is Both the Most Copied and the Hardest to Pin Down With One Mark
The Louis Vuitton Speedy started life in the 1930s as a smaller, lighter cousin of the Keepall, and it has stayed in the line ever since. The Speedy 25 and 30 are the sizes most people picture, with the 35 and 40 for bigger loads and the Bandoulière version adding a shoulder strap. Decades of production mean two things for buyers. There are a lot of genuine bags in circulation, in very different ages and conditions, and there are a lot of fakes made to match them.
This guide is built from what genuine Speedys actually show. We reviewed a large number of authenticated Speedys from our own order archive and a set of Speedys that were ruled fake, looking for details that repeat. What we found is worth knowing before you start: a Speedy is very hard to condemn on any single visible detail, because many fakes get the visible layout right. So this page focuses on what a genuine bag looks like up close, so you can check a specific bag against it.
Worth knowing
We do not have a set of repeatable counterfeit tells for the Speedy that we would stand behind, so this guide does not include a ranked "fake tells" table. Most of the fake Speedys we reviewed looked convincing at first sight, and several were only distinguishable by an expert comparing the details closely. A convincing bag that passes every check here still needs a professional opinion if the money is real.
Speedy Sizes and Versions
- Speedy 25, 30, 35 and 40: the number is the width in centimetres. The 30 is the most common everyday size.
- Speedy Bandoulière: the same bag with a detachable strap and an extra ring for it.
- Materials: Monogram canvas is the classic, with Damier Ebène, Damier Azur, Epi and a long list of limited editions (Multicolore, Stephen Sprouse, Escale and others).
Listings often mislabel these. A pastel or graffiti Speedy is not automatically fake, because LV has released many special editions. It does mean you should confirm the colourway existed in the year the date code says the bag was made.
Where the Marks Are on a Genuine Speedy
Before comparing details, know where to look. On a genuine Speedy:
- Side tab (outside): a vachetta leather tab at each end of the bag, held by a stitched V. The heat stamp reads "LOUIS VUITTON PARIS made in France" here.
- Interior tab: a small leather tab inside the bag, sewn to the lining, with a rivet and the date code stamped into it.
- Handle tabs: leather triangles that anchor the handles, with a stamped rivet in each.
- Zip pull tab: a leather tab on the zip with a stamped rivet.
- Padlock and key (when present): stamped brass.
The Heat Stamp on the Side Tab
The stamp is a soft, shallow impression in natural vachetta, not a hard, deep engraving. The registered mark sits above "LOUIS VUITTON", "PARIS" is centred beneath, and "made in France" (or another country) is on the last line. Lettering is evenly spaced and lines up centrally on the tab.
Two cautions from the bags we reviewed. First, genuine stamps wear, and on a used bag they can become faint or partly illegible, so a worn stamp is not a red flag by itself. Second, some fakes carry clean, well-formed stamps, so a good stamp does not confirm anything.
The Interior Tab, Lining and Date Code
The date code is stamped into the interior leather tab (often the small tab under the inner pocket or beside the zip). On the genuine bags we reviewed the code was present, small, and stamped in the same soft manner as the exterior stamp.
Lining by material. The Monogram Speedys we reviewed were lined in smooth, woven brown cotton canvas. Damier Azur was lined in beige canvas, and Damier Ebène Speedys are lined in red. The lining is tightly woven and flat.
How to read the code. From about 2007 to 2021 the code is two factory letters and four digits: the first and third digits are the week, the second and fourth are the year. Before 2007 the first and third digits are the month. Examples from genuine bags we reviewed: TH1003 is October 2003, and SD3142 is week 34 of 2012. Worth knowing
The date code tells you when and where a bag was made. It does not tell you whether it is real, because counterfeiters copy genuine codes. Use it as a consistency check: the year should fit the material and colourway, and the factory country should match the "made in" line on the side tab. Bags made from about 2021 onward carry an internal chip rather than a stamped code, so a recent bag with no visible code can be normal.
Handle Tabs, Rivets and the Zip Pull
- Rivets carry "LOUIS VUITTON" around the head on the genuine bags we reviewed, on the handle tabs, the interior tab and the zip-pull tab.
- Handle tabs are cut leather with an even, close row of yellow stitching in a pentagon-style panel. Vachetta darkens from pale cream to honey and caramel with use, so both pale and dark tabs can be genuine.
- Side tab and zip on the genuine bags: the side tab has a hole for the padlock, and the zip runs smoothly with a brass pull and a rivet stamped LOUIS VUITTON.
- Size mark: on some bags a small number stamped on the underside of a tab shows the size (for example 25 or 30).
Vachetta patina shows age, not origin. A seller who points to dark patina as proof of authenticity has told you nothing.
The Padlock and Keys
Speedys are often sold with a brass padlock and two keys. On the genuine locks we reviewed the face carries the LV monogram, and the body is stamped with "LOUIS VUITTON PARIS made in France". The keys carry a stamped number, which should match the number on the lock.
A mismatched or missing padlock does not by itself mean the bag is fake. Locks get lost and replaced. Treat the padlock as supporting evidence at most.
What We Did and Did Not Find on Fakes
We went through a broad set of Speedys that were ruled fake in our archive, alongside a comparable set of genuine ones, and compared them detail by detail. The honest summary:
- Most looked convincing. Correct layout, correct stamps, correct tabs. Many would pass a quick glance.
- The listing name is not reliable. Some "Speedy" orders in the fake pile were really different bags, so do not trust the model name in a listing.
- One pattern recurred. Some of the fake bags were lined in a fuzzy, suede-like brown fabric instead of the smooth woven canvas we saw in every genuine Monogram Speedy we reviewed. That is a small sample, so treat it as a reason to look closer, not as proof.
Beyond our own photos, authenticators commonly report other tells, such as monogram patterns that do not line up cleanly at the seams and handles, and rivet or stamp lettering that is slightly off. We have not confirmed those against our own fake set, so we list them here as general market knowledge only.
What to Rely On, and What Not To
- Rely on: an all-round match to the genuine details above, a date code that fits the model and material, and a seller who can show clear, close photos of the tab, rivets and interior.
- Do not rely on: the box or dust bag, a card or certificate (Louis Vuitton does not issue authentication certificates), the padlock alone, or the date code alone.

FAQ
What is the difference between a Speedy 25 and a Speedy 30?
Size. The number is the width in centimetres, so the 30 holds more and the 25 is more compact. The construction details are the same on both, so the same checks apply.
Does a Speedy Bandoulière have the same authentication points?
Yes, plus the strap and the extra ring the strap clips to. The tabs, rivets, stamps, lining and date code follow the same pattern as the standard Speedy.
How do I read the date code on a 2018 Speedy?
From about 2007 to 2021, the code is two factory letters and four digits. The first and third digits are the week, and the second and fourth digits are the year. A bag made in week 25 of 2018 in France would read FL2158: FL for the factory, then 2 and 5 for the week (first and third digits) and 1 and 8 for the year (second and fourth digits).
Why does my Speedy have no date code?

Is a vintage Speedy worth more than a new one?
