The Speedy: 90 Years of Production, Decades of Faking
The Louis Vuitton Speedy dates to 1930, originally designed as a lighter travel version of the Keepall. It became available for regular retail in the 1960s at the request of Audrey Hepburn, who wanted a smaller version of the Keepall. The Speedy 25 and 30 are by far the most recognizable — the 25 measures 25 cm wide, the 30 measures 30 cm — and they're among the most counterfeited bags that have ever existed.
The Speedy's authentication framework matters because the bag has been in production long enough that both the bag itself and its fakes have a documented history. Very early Speedys from the 1960s and 70s have different characteristics than 2020 versions. Fakes from the 1990s exist alongside fakes made last year. Size Variants and Dimensions
Authentic Speedy bags are produced in several sizes. The width measurement is in centimeters and is part of the model name:

Dimensional accuracy is the first check. Measure the bag. A bag marketed as a "Speedy 30" that measures 26 cm or 33 cm is either labeled wrong or incorrectly sized — a consistent fake tell.
1. Silhouette and Shape
An authentic Speedy has a distinctive silhouette that's been consistent since its introduction: a rounded base (not flat), handles that attach at the top rather than at the ends, and sides that taper very slightly from top to bottom. When filled, the bag has a slightly rounded "drum" shape.
Fakes frequently produce the Speedy as a more rectangular bag — flatter sides, corners that are too sharp, handles that sit at slightly wrong positions. Stand the bag on a flat surface and look at it from the front: the overall shape should feel balanced and rounded, not box-like.
2. Monogram Canvas: Color and Print
The Speedy's monogram canvas is the same material as all LV monogram canvas pieces — coated cotton with the LV initials and quatrefoil pattern.
Background color: A warm, slightly milky beige. Not gray, not yellow, not heavily brown. In natural light, it should read as a warm neutral. Many fakes have canvas that's either too gray or too yellow-orange.
"LOUIS VUITTON" text: In the monogram pattern, the two words LOUIS and VUITTON appear in an arc. On authentic bags, both words are exactly the same size — same letter height, same letter weight. A common fake tell is that "Louis" appears slightly smaller than "Vuitton." This is a specific error that appears consistently across multiple generations of fakes.
Print quality: The monogram elements should look embedded in the canvas rather than printed on top of it. The edges of each element fade slightly into the surrounding canvas. Fakes with sharp-edged, obviously printed elements are inconsistent with authentic canvas.
Canvas seam at the base: At the very bottom of the Speedy, the two canvas panels meet at a seam. On authentic bags, the monogram pattern is matched at this seam — the pattern continues consistently across the seam point. On fakes, the pattern frequently mismatches at the base seam.
3. Vachetta Leather Handles and Trim
The Speedy uses vachetta leather — natural, undyed cowhide — for the handles and the piping around the bag's base. Authentication points:
Handles: Should be symmetrical in shape, consistent in diameter, and feel substantial in hand. The leather starts as pale cream and develops a honey-to-caramel patina with use. Fresh vachetta looks almost white; well-used vachetta is warm brown. Both are authentic at different stages of use.
Handle attachment: At each end of the handle, a small D-shaped leather tab connects to the bag body via a metal ring. The tab has an engraved production number — thin, fine numbers in a small font. On fakes, this number is often too large or too bold.
Piping quality: The vachetta piping around the base should be consistent in width and evenly applied. Where the piping meets at corners, the joint should be clean.
4. Hardware
The Speedy's hardware is minimal — the zipper pull, D-ring tabs at the handle attachments, and the padlock (sometimes included). All hardware is warm gold in color — not yellow, not chrome, not dull.
Engraving: The lock (where present) carries "Louis Vuitton Paris" engraving that is thin and even. The zipper pull engraving reads "Louis Vuitton" in a clean font. Fakes frequently have engraving that's too deep or too bold.
Zipper function: The Speedy zipper should glide smoothly along its entire length without catching. The teeth are fine and close-set. A zipper that binds or has visibly larger teeth is inconsistent with authentic construction.
5. Interior
Interior pocket fabric: The Speedy's interior zipper pocket is lined with a specific fabric — on standard models, this is typically a dark burgundy or rose-pink canvas, depending on the version. The fabric is dense and matte. A pocket lining that's too bright, too shiny, or a different color than the expected range for that production period is suspicious.
Date code: The date code is stamped on the interior leather tab (the "Louis Vuitton Paris" tab) or directly on the lining. Post-2007 format: two factory letters + four digits. The country letters should match the "Made in..." text on the heat stamp.

6. Stitching
LV's stitching benchmark on canvas bags is approximately 5 stitches per centimeter. The thread is a warm, muted mustard-yellow — not bright yellow, not orange. Even stitching that's consistent along the seam length.
The stitching at the base seam (where the two canvas panels join at the bottom) should be reinforced and particularly even, because this is a stress point.
7. Packaging
An authentic Speedy from a boutique comes in a brown LV box with orange lining, a beige flannel dust bag with the LV monogram, and a care card. Louis Vuitton does not include "authentication certificates" — any such card is not from LV and provides no authentication value.

Authentication checks are the same for both. The Speedy 35 and 40 are larger travel-adjacent sizes. All sizes have the same proportional characteristics.
Does a Speedy B (Bandoulière) have all the same authentication points?
Yes, plus the shoulder strap hardware. The Speedy Bandoulière is the Speedy with an added D-ring and strap attachment that allows crossbody wear. What date code format should a 2018 Speedy have?
Post-2007 format: two factory letters + four digits encoding week and year. A bag made in week 25 of 2018 at a French facility might have a code like FL2518. Read: FL (France), week 25 (1st and 3rd digits), year 18 (2nd and 4th digits).
Why does my Speedy have no date code?
If the bag was made after 2021, there's no visible date code — LV switched to RFID chips. If the bag is claimed to be pre-2021 and has no code, that's a concern worth investigating through professional authentication.
Is a vintage Speedy worth more than a new one?
Depends on condition and era. A Speedy 25 from the 1970s–80s in excellent condition with rich, even patina on the vachetta and original brass zipper can command a significant premium from collectors who prize the older leather quality and production standards.
