The Most Counterfeited Bag in the World
There is a strong argument that the Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM holds the title of the world's most replicated bag. Since its introduction in 2007, it has remained one of LV's highest-selling pieces in every market — and consistently one of the top targets for counterfeiters. The sheer volume of fakes that circulate means that if you're buying pre-owned on any secondary market, the statistical risk of encountering a fake is genuinely high.
The good news is that the Neverfull's authentication markers are well-documented, specific, and consistent across production. The fakes get many things wrong.
Understanding the Neverfull MM Specifications
Before running authentication checks, confirm you're evaluating the correct model variant. The Neverfull comes in three sizes:
- PM: 29.5 cm × 24 cm × 12 cm — the smallest
- MM: 31 cm × 28 cm × 15 cm — the most common, widest range of fakes
- GM: 38.5 cm × 32 cm × 19 cm — the largest
A bag presented as a Neverfull MM that measures significantly outside the PM-to-MM range is either mislabeled or incorrectly sized — a common fake tell because counterfeiters don't always nail the dimensions.
The canvas pattern should also match the stated version. The standard Monogram canvas has the LV initials and quatrefoil flower pattern on a brown coated cotton canvas. The Damier Ebene and Damier Azur versions have a different grid pattern. Each has its own specific authentication points.
Canvas: The Starting Point
The monogram canvas on an authentic Neverfull is coated cotton — not vinyl, not PVC. The coating gives it a very slightly waxy, firm feel that is clearly textile rather than plastic.
Color: The background is a warm, dark brown — often described as chocolate or tobacco. It should have a natural warmth to it. Fakes frequently have a gray-brown, gray-beige, or excessively yellow-orange background. Hold the canvas in natural light to check the true color without artificial lighting distorting it.
Monogram placement: Louis Vuitton's monogram pattern is consistent — the LV initials and the four-petaled flowers appear in a specific repeating arrangement. Critically, the pattern should not be cut off arbitrarily at the seams. On authentic bags, the pattern is carefully matched and the placement is intentional. At the center seam of the bag (the bottom), the pattern should align symmetrically.
Print quality: The print looks embedded in the canvas, not sitting on top of it. At the edge of any printed element, the ink fades slightly into the weave rather than having a sharp cut-off edge. Fakes have print that looks applied on top of the surface, with visible edges to each printed element.
Shape and Structure
The Neverfull MM is named for a reason — it's designed to be flexible and expandable. The sides of the bag have leather strap and D-ring hardware that can be cinched to change the bag's profile. When cinched, the top of the bag gathers; when released, it opens fully.
Silhouette: Standing the bag on a surface and looking at it straight on, the sides are taller than the center — creating a shallow curve at the bottom when open. Fakes are often more rectangular, lacking this characteristic curve.
Side profile: Look at the bag from the side. The side panels (the interior face when the bag is cinched) have a "boat" profile — the center of the side panel is lower than the edges. This is a specific construction feature that fakes frequently flatten out.
Hardware and Stitching
D-Ring and Cinch Hardware
The D-rings on the sides are deep gold in color — not shiny, not dull, but a warm, rich gold with visual depth. Tapping it should produce a solid sound, not hollow. The strap and D-ring system should operate smoothly — strap through ring, no binding.
The screws holding the handle attachment tabs are small, recessed, and offset from the top edge. If the screws are at the very top edge, they're wrong. Authentic screws sit in a specific recessed position below the top of the handle attachment leather.
Stitching
Louis Vuitton's Neverfull uses a specific thread count. Count the stitches along one centimeter of any straight seam — you should find approximately 5 stitches per centimeter. The thread color on the monogram canvas is a warm, slightly muted mustard-yellow. Bright yellow or orange thread is not authentic.
Zipper (Where Applicable)
The Neverfull does not come with a main zipper — it's an open-top bag. However, the pochette insert (the removable interior clutch that comes with MM and GM sizes in more recent production) has a zipper. The zipper pull is rounded and gold-toned, moves smoothly, and has no binding.
Interior: Lining and Date Code
Lining Color
The standard Neverfull interior is either a red or rose (pink) striped canvas, depending on production year. The stripes are consistent in width, even in color, and the lining fabric is thick and substantial. The "Louis Vuitton" text that repeats across the lining is large, clearly legible, and consistently spaced. Fakes often have lining that's too bright red or too pink, with text that's smaller, too close together, or inconsistently printed.
Interior Leather Tag
The "Louis Vuitton Paris" interior leather tag is key. The leather should be the same quality as the exterior vachetta — not thin or cheap. The heat stamp reads "Louis Vuitton Paris / Made in France" (or another country). The letters are deep and even — no character is shallower or lighter than the others.
Country of manufacture: Louis Vuitton Neverfulls are produced in France, Spain, and the USA. All three origins are authentic. If the heat stamp says "Made in France" but the date code shows a Spanish factory prefix, that's contradictory — it warrants scrutiny.
Date Code Format
From 2007 onward, LV used a two-letter factory code followed by four digits, where the digits encode the week and year of production (1st and 3rd digits = week; 2nd and 4th = year). Example: FL3089 = factory FL (France), week 38, year 2009.
The date code should:
- Be in a small, consistent font — not bold, not oversized
- Use the correct letter-digit format for a post-2007 bag
- Have factory letters that match the "Made in..." country on the heat stamp

Check My Date Code →What Authentic Packaging Looks Like
Louis Vuitton does not include plastic "authentication cards," third-party certificates, or hologram stickers in its Neverfull packaging. Authentic packaging is a brown LV box, a flannel dust bag (beige with LV print in brown), and a care booklet. Nothing more.
If a seller includes a "Certificate of Authenticity" card — especially a laminated or plastic one — that card is not from LV. It's a fake-market accessory to create false confidence.

FAQ
What does a Louis Vuitton Neverfull date code look like?
From 2007 onward: two factory letters + four digits. Digits alternate week and year (1st and 3rd digit = week of year; 2nd and 4th digit = year). Example: SD4051 means factory SD, week 45, year 2001. Before 2007, a different format was used where the first two digits were month and the last two were year. Our LV date code tool decodes all formats.
Is there a Neverfull without a date code?
No — every genuine Neverfull has a date code. LV replaced date codes with RFID chips in 2021, so a very new bag may not have a visible code, but pre-2021 Neverfulls all have them. A pre-2021 Neverfull with no date code is a strong indicator of a fake.
What factory letter codes indicate French manufacture?
French factory codes for LV include: SP, FL, AR, DU, CT, MB, MI, NO, RI, SD, TH, TR, VI, LM, LA. Spanish codes include CA, LO, UB, LB, GI, BC. US codes include SD, TX, OS, FC, FH. If the heat stamp says "Made in France" but the date code starts with CA or LO, that's contradictory.
Should the Neverfull come with a pochette?
More recent production (post approximately 2012) Neverfull MM and GM bags come with a removable interior clutch (pochette) that doubles as a separate small bag. If you're buying a newer MM or GM and no pochette is included, either the seller removed it separately (it has additional resale value) or the bag is older production or fake. Always confirm whether the pochette is included before purchase.
Is a Neverfull with a white interior an older version?
Some very early Neverfulls (2007–2010 depending on the market) had a white or light beige interior instead of the rose/red stripe that became standard. The white interior is authentic for that era. If a more recent bag has a white interior, cross-reference the date code — the interior color should be consistent with the production year.
