What a Genuine Louis Vuitton Musette Looks Like
The Musette is a flat, magnetic-flap Louis Vuitton shoulder and crossbody bag. It came as the Salsa and the Tango, in different sizes and strap lengths, mostly in Monogram canvas and Damier Ebene. Today you meet it mainly on the resale market, which is where most people start asking whether theirs is real.
We have authenticated hundreds of Louis Vuitton bags from photos, and Musettes are among the ones that rarely come back fake. That is useful to know, but it is not the same as a test. The few counterfeit Musettes we have seen were heavily worn, with limited photos, and we could not find a repeatable difference in them that we would stand behind. So this is a reference guide: it shows what genuine Musettes look like, and it does not hand you a list of tells that we cannot support.
Worth knowing
Everything pictured here comes from genuine Musettes that passed authentication. We do not have enough confirmed counterfeit Musettes to build a real-versus-fake comparison, so there are no red-flag checks below. If we collect them, this guide will be upgraded.

Check My Date Code →The Flap Stamp
Open the flap and look at the leather lining. Genuine Musettes carry a heat stamp there that reads LOUIS VUITTON, PARIS and a "made in" line, with the registered mark above it. The ink is dark on Monogram bags and red on the Damier Ebene bag we checked.

Spain and France both appear on genuine Musettes, so the country in the "made in" line is not a way to tell real from fake. What the stamp can tell you is whether it looks like the others: pressed cleanly into the leather, letters evenly spaced, nothing smudged or floating on top.
Worth knowing
A stamp photographed at an angle, or on a bag with a worn lining, can look off even on a genuine piece. Take it straight on, in daylight.
The Date Code on the Suede Lining
Inside the bag, on the suede lining, genuine Musettes carry a date code: two letters and four digits. On the examples below the code is pressed into orange suede on the Monogram bag and red suede on the Damier bag.

You can read a code with our Louis Vuitton date code checker, and the date code guide explains the formats by era. Use it to see whether the code fits the bag's age and the "made in" country. Do not treat it as proof: a code is easy to copy, and an LV date code identifies where and when a piece was made, not whether this one bag is genuine. For older pieces, our vintage Louis Vuitton guide covers what else to expect.
Hardware, Snap and Strap
The Musette closes with a magnetic snap, a gold-coloured disc with a stud on the flap lining. The strap is vachetta leather on Monogram bags and dark leather on Damier Ebene, with a gold-coloured buckle and a keeper.

Be careful with what you read into these parts. Vachetta darkens with age and sun, so a strap that has turned honey or brown is normal on a bag that has been used. Gold plating wears, and suede lining gets matted. None of that points to a fake.
What Photos Cannot Prove
A guide like this can show you what a genuine Musette looks like. It cannot clear yours. Good counterfeiters copy stamps, hardware and date codes, and in the examples we have seen, none of those separated real from fake on a Musette. So please do not decide from one detail, a code that decodes cleanly, or a "made in" line that looks right.
What does carry weight is how the whole bag fits together: canvas pattern alignment, edge paint, stitching, the feel of the leather and the hardware in the hand. Those are things a person can check on the bag and a photo only partly shows.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
If you are buying a Musette and the price matters, a second opinion is cheaper than a mistake. LuxeDetect authenticates Louis Vuitton bags with a verdict and Certificate of Authenticity within 24 hours. Start an authentication with clear photos of the flap stamp, the date code, the snap, the strap hardware and the whole bag from the front, back and sides.
FAQ
How can I tell if my Louis Vuitton Musette is real?
Start inside: check the heat stamp on the flap lining and the date code on the suede lining against the examples above. Both should be clean and sit where they do on genuine bags. Neither is proof on its own, so for a bag you are about to pay real money for, get it authenticated.
Where is the date code on a Louis Vuitton Musette?
On the suede lining inside the bag, as two letters and four digits. You can read it with our date code checker.
Is a Musette made in Spain or France?
Both occur on genuine Musettes, so the country alone does not tell you whether a bag is real.
What is the difference between the Musette Salsa and the Tango?
They are two versions of the same flap bag, differing in size and strap length. This guide does not rank them; the checks above apply to both.
Does the date code prove a Musette is authentic?
No. It tells you roughly where and when a bag was made. Counterfeiters can stamp a plausible code, so a code that decodes cleanly is a reason to keep checking, not to stop.
Is a darkened or discoloured vachetta strap a sign of a fake?
No. Vachetta changes colour with age and use. A genuine Musette with a honey or brown strap is normal.
Do you have a list of fake Musette tells?
No. The few counterfeit Musettes we have seen were too worn to show a repeatable difference, so we do not publish one. A reference guide is more honest than an invented list.
