Why Small Leather Goods Deserve the Same Scrutiny as Bags
Louis Vuitton's pouches are small, cheap by LV standards and easy to ship, which is why they are counterfeited and why buyers often check them less carefully than a bag. The same construction standards apply, and the same kinds of details are worth checking: the canvas, the leather tabs and stamps, the zip and the interior label.
"Cosmetic pouch" covers several different LV pieces, and listings mix them up. Knowing which one you have is the first step, because the details differ between them.
Which Pouch Do You Have?
- Cosmetic Pouch (PM, GM): the half-moon zip pouch with a curved top edge, in current production and sold in Monogram, Damier and special-edition materials.
- Toiletry Pouch (15, 19, 26 and others): a flat, rectangular zip pouch with a leather tab at the zip end. The number in the name is the size.
- Trousse Toilette (23, 28): an older, boxier zip case in coated canvas with a brass zip, from earlier decades.
Several of the older ones we reviewed were logged as pre-date-code pieces, so a missing code on those can be normal. Our date code guide covers the eras.
This guide is built from authenticated pouches in our own order archive. We show what each one looks like up close so you can check a specific piece against it.
Worth knowing
We have only a small number of fake-labelled pouch orders with usable photo sets in our archive, which is far too few to identify a tell that repeats. This guide therefore has no ranked "fake tells" table and no red-flag verdicts. Use it to learn what genuine pouches show, and get a professional opinion if the price is significant.
The Cosmetic Pouch: Shape and Canvas
On the Cosmetic Pouch we reviewed, the curved top edge runs into a zip along the top and the Monogram canvas is grainy and evenly patterned. The LV letters, flowers and quatrefoils repeat at a steady spacing across the front of the pouch we reviewed. A monogram that looks stretched or crooked in your own photos is worth a closer look, but we would not condemn a pouch on that alone.
The Interior Tab
Inside the Cosmetic Pouch we reviewed, a small tab stamped "LOUIS VUITTON PARIS" and a country line is stitched to a cream lining beside a slip pocket. This authenticated pouch reads "made in Spain", which is a reminder that Louis Vuitton makes small leather goods in several countries, so the country on its own is never a tell.
Special editions carry their own tabs. The tab below comes from a Takashi Murakami collaboration and is different in wording and layout from the standard tab, so compare a pouch against the same edition.
The Toiletry Pouch: Flat Shape and Vachetta Zip Tab
The Toiletry Pouch is a flat, rectangular Monogram pouch with a vachetta tab at the zip end. Vachetta is natural, undyed leather that darkens from pale cream to honey and then caramel as it ages, and it is often uneven on a used pouch.
Patina shows age and handling, not origin. A seller who points to a dark, worn tab as proof that a pouch is genuine has not told you anything.
On the black Murakami Multicolore Toiletry Pouch we reviewed, the zip-end tab is black leather rather than vachetta, with "LOUIS VUITTON PARIS" stamped below a registered mark. Tab colour follows the pouch's material and edition, so do not judge a tab against a different version.
The Trousse Toilette: Older Boxy Case and Brass Zip
The Trousse Toilette is the older boxy case, with piped edges.
On the Trousse we reviewed, the zip is brass with a pull carrying an LV monogram. In a lower-resolution photo of an older Trousse 28 the interior label looked like a woven cloth tape rather than a stamped leather tab, so older cases can differ from current pouches. Do not compare a Trousse Toilette to a modern Cosmetic Pouch.
What We Did and Did Not Find on Fakes
We do not have enough fake-labelled pouch photos to name a tell. Older guides to these pouches (including an earlier version of this one) point to details such as an edge paint that is too red or a snap button with poor lettering; we could not confirm any of that against our own photos, so we have removed it. Genuine pouches vary by edition, material and age, which makes rules of thumb risky.
We also did not get a clear date-code close-up from the pouches in this sample, so we do not say where the code sits on each model. Some pouches carry a code and some do not, depending on the era; see our date code guide.
What to Rely On, and What Not To
- Rely on: an all-round match to the same version and edition, clean stamps and tabs, and clear close photos of the interior label, zip and tab.
- Do not rely on: patina, the "made in" country alone, a date code alone (counterfeiters copy real ones), a box, a dust bag or a receipt. Louis Vuitton does not issue authentication certificates for pouches.

FAQ
Is a darkened, patinated vachetta tab a sign of a fake?
No. Vachetta is designed to darken with age, light and handling, so a dark tab is expected on a used genuine pouch. A tab's colour tells you about age and use, not about who made it.
Can I verify a Louis Vuitton date code online?
Louis Vuitton does not offer a public date code lookup. You can check that a code fits a known format for the claimed era, for example with our date code tool, but a valid format does not prove a pouch is genuine.
Does every LV pouch have a date code?
No. Some older pieces predate date codes, and pieces from about 2021 onward carry an internal chip instead of a stamped code. Where a code exists, it can be stamped in different places depending on the piece.
Why does my pouch say "made in Spain"?
Louis Vuitton makes small leather goods in several countries, including France and Spain. The genuine Cosmetic Pouch shown above is stamped "made in Spain", so the country on its own tells you nothing about authenticity.
Do all Louis Vuitton pouches have a vachetta tab?
No. The flat Toiletry Pouch we reviewed in Monogram had a vachetta zip tab, but the black Murakami pouch had a black leather one, and the half-moon Cosmetic Pouch's stamped label is inside on a cream lining. Check the version you have against the same version.
