How to Authenticate Vetements Clothing: Labels, Tags and Care Codes Explained

Genuine Vetements clothing carries a set of woven labels, and fakes copy them, so a matching tag settles nothing on its own. Here is what each genuine label says and how to read it, from the Demna Gvasalia tag to the care code.

Why Vetements Clothing Is Read Label by Label

A Vetements hoodie or tee is a simple garment: heavy black cotton, a boxy cut and a print. What identifies it is the stack of small labels sewn inside, each saying something different. A genuine piece in our records can carry a brand label, a season label, a composition label and a care label, and the labels change from one collection to the next. That makes the labels the natural place to start.

It also means a label is easy to misread. Fakes copy every label type shown in this guide, down to the wording and the layout, so reading a tag correctly is not the same as proving the piece. We could not find an authentication guide from Vetements itself, so what follows is a record of what genuine pieces in our archive show, sorted by label, not a brand rule.

Worth knowing

This guide is built from verified genuine Vetements examples: hoodies, tees, collaboration pieces, outerwear and sock boots. We do not yet have a set of confirmed counterfeits that differ in a way we can show, so there are no red flags or real-vs-fake tables here. When that changes, this guide will be upgraded. Until then, use it to learn what genuine labels look like, and treat a match as a starting point.

The Label Stack at a Glance

Not every piece has every label, and the order inside the garment varies, so use this as a checklist of what to find rather than a set of required items.

  • Brand label: a white woven tag, usually reading "DEMNA GVASALIA" on the pieces in our records, and on some later pieces a plain white tag reading "©gvasalia".
  • Season label: a white label with five short lines: VETEMENTS, the line (POUR FEMME, POUR HOMME or UNISEX), the department, the season and year, and PRET-A-PORTER.
  • Composition label: a black woven label with the fabric content in English and French and a "made in" line.
  • Care label: a black label with a style code, the colour in English and French, wash symbols and the company name.
  • Embroidery: the brand name with a season, stitched or embossed on the hood or cuff.

The Demna Gvasalia Label

On the hoodies in our records this is a small white woven label with the single line "DEMNA GVASALIA" in black capitals, set at the neck. The letters are plain and evenly spaced, and the label has no logo or other text. It is the brand label, so it does not say Vetements and carries no season.

Do not expect it on every piece. The same record set includes pieces where this tag is replaced, as the next section shows, and a missing "DEMNA GVASALIA" tag is not by itself a reason to doubt a garment.

The Later "©gvasalia" Tag

Some pieces in our records carry a plain white tag with lowercase "©gvasalia" instead: a puffer jacket, a bomber jacket and a tee from the VTMNTS line. The puffer and the tee also show care labels reading "VTMNTS AG" rather than "VETEMENTS GROUP AG". We have not confirmed when the change was made, so we do not use it to date a piece. What we can say is that both tags appear on genuine garments, so neither one is a tell.

The Season Label

The season label has five lines. Reading the one above from the top:

  • VETEMENTS: the brand.
  • UNISEX: the line. We also see POUR FEMME and POUR HOMME.
  • GARDEROBE: the department. Other genuine labels in our records read TRICOTS, CHEMISES, OUTERWEAR or COLLECTION.
  • HIVER2020: the season and year. HIVER is winter and ETE is summer in French, so ETE2016 and ETE2018 are spring-summer pieces and HIVER2017, HIVER2019 and HIVER2021 are autumn-winter. The hood embroidery on the same hoodie reads "AUTOMNE-HIVER 2020" and agrees with it.
  • PRET-A-PORTER: ready-to-wear. On collaboration pieces such as the Champion, Tommy Hilfiger and Levi's items in our records, this last line reads COLLABORATION instead.

On the hoodie shown, the season on the label and the season embroidered on the hood agree. Look for the same agreement on your piece, but a match is not proof: fakes copy this label with the correct layout.

The Composition Label

On the tees and hoodies in our records this is a black woven label with the fabric content in English and French and a line reading "MADE IN PORTUGAL / FABRIQUE EN PORTUGAL". A small woven tab above it carries the size. The print is white on black and the edges are cut and folded cleanly.

The country depends on the piece, so read it as a plain fact about that model and never as a tell. The Champion hoodie and the puffer jacket in our records read MADE IN ITALY, and the Alpha Industries bomber reads MADE IN CHINA. A "made in" line that differs from the one above is not a reason to doubt a piece, and one that matches proves nothing.

The Care Label and Style Code

The black care label gives a style code at the top, the colour in English and French, five wash symbols, and "VETEMENTS GROUP AG" at the foot. On this hoodie the code is "UAH20TR724" and the colour "BLACK RAINBOW / NOIR ARC EN CIEL".

We see many different code formats on genuine pieces, for example SS16TP15, WSS18TR29, MSS17CH18 and UAH21TR633, and later VTMNTS pieces use others such as VL20TR100B. They look like a code for gender, season, year and type, but the format is not consistent enough for us to teach, and we have not confirmed what the characters mean. Use the code as a reference to quote when you ask a seller or reviewer about a piece, not as something that verifies it.

The Hood and Cuff Embroidery

Many pieces carry "VETEMENTS" with a season, stitched in white or embossed tone-on-tone, on the rim of the hood or the cuff. The hoodie in our records stamps "AUTOMNE-HIVER 2020" in a tonal raised print under the brand name. Other genuine pieces read AUTOMNE-HIVER 2016 or PRINTEMPS-ETE 2017 and 2018. The season should agree with the season on the white label, as noted above.

Sock Boots: The Sole Stamp and Insole

The stretch-knit sock boots are a different product, and the marks move to the boot. On the red pair in our records, the leather sole is stamped "VETEMENTS / MADE IN ITALY / 37" in capitals, with the size on the last line. The knit cuff carries "VETEMENTS" in white lettering, "DEMNA GVASALIA" is printed on the insole, and a warning sticker with a barcode sits on the heel.

We do not have a confirmed fake boot that differs in any of these marks, so treat this as a description of the genuine pair, not a pass mark.

What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove

Every label in this guide can be copied, and fakes copy them. A white "DEMNA GVASALIA" tag, a correctly laid-out season label, a Portugal composition line and a plausible style code are all things a counterfeit can carry, so a piece that matches them all is not thereby authentic, and a piece with a different arrangement is not thereby fake: the labels change by collection, line and year.

What decides a piece is how the marks, the cut and the materials fit together against a verified pair of the same model: the weight and hand of the fleece, the boxy shape, the print and its edges, the stitching on the hood and cuffs, and whether the label season matches the garment. Weight and feel are checks done with the item in hand. For other pieces from the same designer lineage and from other hype brands, see our Balenciaga clothing guide, Off-White guide and Supreme Box Logo hoodie guide.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

Vetements pieces change hands at prices that make a mistake costly, and every label above can be copied. If a hoodie, jacket or pair of boots matches this guide and the price matters, have it reviewed against verified examples before you pay. LuxeDetect authenticates clothing from $15 with a 24-hour turnaround, a verdict from a specialist and a Certificate of Authenticity. Send clear photos of the front, the back print, every interior label with both sides visible, the hood or cuff embroidery and, for boots, the sole and insole.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

FAQ

How can I tell if my Vetements hoodie is real?

No single label proves it. Genuine Vetements pieces in our records carry a brand label, a season label, a composition label and a care label, and fakes copy all of them. Check that the labels agree with each other and with the hood embroidery and print, then compare the weight, cut and stitching against a verified pair of the same model.

What does the white Vetements label with HIVER or ETE mean?

It is the season label. The five lines give the brand, the line (POUR FEMME, POUR HOMME or UNISEX), the department, the season and year, and PRET-A-PORTER. HIVER is winter and ETE is summer in French, so HIVER2020 is an autumn-winter 2020 piece. Collaboration pieces replace the last line with COLLABORATION.

What is the DEMNA GVASALIA label on a Vetements piece?

It is the brand label on many genuine pieces in our records, a small white woven tag with that single line. Some later pieces carry a plain white tag reading "©gvasalia" instead. Both appear on genuine garments, so neither is a tell on its own.

Does "Made in Portugal" or "Made in Italy" mean my Vetements is fake?

No. Genuine pieces in our records read Portugal on tees and hoodies, Italy on the puffer jacket, the Champion hoodie and the sock boots, and China on the Alpha Industries bomber. The country is a fact about that model, not a test.

Can I authenticate Vetements from photos?

Yes. What decides it is how the labels, the print, the embroidery and the construction fit together against verified pairs of the same model, which clear photos of every interior label, the back print and the hood or cuff show well. Because fakes copy the labels, a professional review is the safer route on an expensive piece.

Can I decode the style code on my Vetements care label?

We would not. The codes on genuine pieces vary in format (SS16TP15, WSS18TR29, UAH20TR724 and others), and we have not confirmed what the characters mean, so we do not use the code to date or verify a piece.
