Why Chanel Clothing Is Hard to Check From a Photo
Chanel clothing is one of the most copied things we see. Across thousands of Chanel clothing orders, about 4 in 10 have come back fake. Scarves, logo sweatshirts and hoodies, shirts and sweaters are the most-faked pieces. Tweed jackets and skirts are mostly genuine in our records, but the fakes in that group are near-perfect copies.
The reason is simple: counterfeiters copy the entire label system. The woven CHANEL neck label, the boxed style code, the bilingual composition label and the care label with its pictograms are all reproduced, down to the layout. A perfectly formatted style code appears on very many fakes, so the format proves nothing. Buttons, chain weights, lining and the font of the neck label showed no consistent difference between genuine and fake pieces either.
So this guide does two honest things. First, it shows what a genuine label set looks like, including the variations that make people suspect a real piece (made in China, Uniform, vintage Boutique labels). Second, it covers the narrow contradictions that do expose a fake. Those catch careless fakes only. A good fake can pass every photo check on this page.
Worth knowing
This guide is built from genuine Chanel clothing labels plus a small set of fake labels that contradict themselves. It does not give you a way to clear a high-quality fake from photos alone. If a piece is expensive, treat the label checks as a way to rule things out, not to approve.

Check My Serial →The Genuine Label Set
A modern genuine Chanel garment usually carries four separate fabric labels. Not every piece has all four in the same arrangement, but this is the pattern to compare against.
The woven neck label
A black woven label with CHANEL in white, the interlocked CC below it, and a dotted stitched border on the sides. A small separate size label hangs underneath. On the piece below it is a 36.

The style label
A white satin label with the country of manufacture in French and English, then a bordered box. The top box holds the style code, a P, five digits, a letter, then five more digits. The second box holds a colour code and the size. On genuine labelled pieces we see mostly France, with Italy the next most common.

That format is the part fakes copy best. Do not read a correct-looking code as a sign the piece is real. There is no public database that tells you what a code should belong to.
The composition label
A separate bordered label, in French and English, listing the fibres, for example "100% laine - wool", and on lined pieces the lining: "doublure - lining: 100% soie - silk". A vertical number runs down the edge of the label.
The care label
A bordered label with care instructions in French and English and a row of pictograms. On many pieces it sits right next to the composition label, as below.

Look closely at the care text on that label: "progessionnel" and "progessional" are misspelt. That typo sits on this genuine piece, and fakes have copied it too. A misprint on a care label is not a reliable sign in either direction, so do not use it to condemn or to approve a piece.
Genuine Variations That Worry Buyers
Several real variations get genuine pieces called fake in listing comments. Know them before you walk away from a good piece.
Made in China, Portugal or another country
Not every genuine Chanel garment is made in France or Italy. Some genuine pieces are made in China, and others in countries such as Portugal. These pieces usually come with a composition label that carries the country line, rather than the boxed style-code label. So a China country line on its own is not a sign of a fake.

Chanel Uniform pieces
Some genuine garments were made for Chanel staff. Their woven label reads CHANEL UNIFORM and NOT FOR RESALE, and the label layout beside it is a plainer grey and white style. These are real Chanel garments, and the label can look wrong to someone who only knows the standard neck label.

If you are looking at a Uniform piece, remember its label says it was not meant for resale. That is a question about how the piece reached the market, not about whether it is real.
Vintage Boutique labels
Older pieces, typically from the 1990s, carry a CHANEL BOUTIQUE label with the CC in a plain ring, and sometimes a separate sheet with the style, colour, size and composition written in by hand. The writing, the paper and the layout differ from modern labels, and that is normal for the era.

Hardware and Construction: Context, Not Proof
Genuine Chanel jackets often carry buttons with the CC, a lion or pearl detail, and tweed jackets often have a chain sewn inside the hem or front edge, with silk lining. These are real genuine features, and you should expect to see them. They are also easy to copy and we found no consistent difference between genuine and fake examples, so they cannot carry the decision.

The Narrow Tells: Labels That Contradict Themselves
Because fakes copy the label system, the only label checks that still work are the ones where a fake gets the system wrong. These are narrow. They catch careless fakes, and passing them proves nothing.
A country line that does not fit the label
On a standard boxed style-code label, the country line is France or Italy. We have seen several fakes whose boxed P-code label says Made in China (one even printing the French as "Fabrique en China", which is not French for China) or pairs "Made in Italy" with "Fabrique au Royaume-Uni" (United Kingdom). We have not found that on a genuine boxed label. Genuine pieces made in China exist, but they sit on a different label type, as shown above.

Red flag
A boxed style-code label whose country line is China or the United Kingdom, or whose English and French lines name different countries, is a strong reason to stop. Do not apply this to genuine pieces made in China that carry the composition-style label with no code box.
Label text that is not Chanel's
Genuine Chanel labels are French and English, printed in the same style as the examples above. Some fakes carry labels that are plainly something else: a Chinese-only fabric tag with a numeric size, Russian or other extra languages added to the fibre line, an English-only generic care label, a QR code on a care label, or an invented multi-language factory label.

Red flag
Care or composition text that is not French and English in the Chanel style, any QR code, or a factory-address label with invented language lines is not a genuine Chanel label.
What Does Not Prove a Piece Is Real or Fake
- A correctly formatted style code. It appears on very many fakes.
- A care-label typo such as "progessional". It is on a genuine piece shown above, and fakes copied it.
- Chain weight, button backs, stitching or lining. Fakes copy them, and genuine pieces vary.
- A made-in-China line by itself. Some genuine pieces are made in China.
- A serial number or chip. Chanel's serial stickers and chips belong to bags. Our Chanel serial guides do not apply to clothing.
- Which country, France or Italy. It is not an inspection rule.
Quick Label Check
- Photograph the neck label, the style label, the composition label and the care label separately and in focus.
- Check that the label types make sense for the era: a Uniform label, a vintage Boutique sheet or a modern woven label.
- On a boxed style-code label, read the country line in both languages and make sure they agree and name France or Italy.
- Read the composition and care text for French and English only, with no QR code or extra languages.
- If it passes, you have ruled out a careless fake. You have not proved the piece is genuine.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
For a Chanel garment, an authenticator looks at the whole label set, the fabric, the weave and cut, the hardware and the finishing together, and compares them with confirmed genuine pieces for the same style. They can also notice things a single listing cannot, such as the same style code appearing on unrelated garments, which is a real sign of a fake label set but not something a buyer can check alone.
If the piece is valuable, or the label checks above are all clean but something still feels off, order an authentication and receive a Certificate of Authenticity with the verdict. For other Chanel items, see our guides to the Chanel belt and Chanel costume jewelry.
FAQ
How can I tell if my Chanel clothing is real?
You cannot prove it from photos alone, because fakes copy the label system. You can rule out careless fakes by checking that the country line fits the label, that the text is French and English in Chanel's style, and that there is no QR code or extra-language label. A piece that passes still needs an authenticator if it matters.
Is a Chanel style code like P56642K07388 proof that it is real?
No. A perfectly formatted code, a P, five digits, a letter and five digits, appears on very many fakes. There is no public database that confirms a code belongs to a given garment.
Is Chanel clothing ever made in China?
Yes. Some genuine Chanel pieces are made in China, and others in countries such as Portugal. They typically carry a composition-style label with the country line rather than the boxed style-code label, so a China line alone does not mean fake. A China or United Kingdom line on a boxed style-code label is a red flag.
What does a Chanel Uniform label mean?
CHANEL UNIFORM, NOT FOR RESALE labels appear on garments made for Chanel staff. They are real Chanel garments with a different label layout, but they were not intended for sale, so how the piece reached the market is worth asking about.
Does a misspelt care label mean my Chanel is fake?
Not by itself. A care-label misprint such as "progessional" appears on a genuine piece and on fakes that copied it. Do not use it as a verdict either way.
Do Chanel serial numbers or NFC chips apply to clothing?
No. Chanel's serial stickers and chips are used in bags, and our serial guides do not decode clothing. Clothing is identified by its style-code label.
Which Chanel clothing is faked most?
Scarves, logo sweatshirts and hoodies, shirts and sweaters are the most-faked categories in our records. Tweed jackets and skirts are mostly genuine, but the fakes among them are very close copies of the labels.
