Why the Boston Is Judged by the Inside, Not the Canvas
The Gucci Boston is a barrel-shaped zip bag in GG canvas with leather trim, usually with a Web stripe, a top handle and a shoulder strap. Gucci has sold it as the Joy, the Vintage Web, the Nice and in many other forms, and the same shape also exists as a duffle. It is copied constantly, and the copies get the outside right more often than most people expect.
That is the honest starting point of this guide. In the Boston and duffle bags we have checked, the GG canvas pattern, the stitching, the studs, the strap clips and the leather patch emboss looked the same on genuine bags and on a good share of the fakes. Some fakes were visually identical to genuine bags in photos. If a seller's photos look perfect, that does not clear the bag, and this guide cannot promise to spot every fake by eye.
What did separate the fakes we checked is small and printed: the tag and label on the inside of the bag, and a few engraved details. These tells were absent from the genuine bags we compared them against. They are strong when present and silent when not, so we rank them below and say what each one does and does not prove.
What to check, ranked by reliability
| Checkpoint | Reliability | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Counting Digits and Misspelled Words on Interior Tags | ★★★★★ | A rising run of digits or a typo in controllato on a patch or tag ended the inspection every time we saw it. |
| 2. The Black Fabric Label Versus a White QR Label | ★★★★★ | A white GUCCI FLORENCE QR label was fake-only in our checks, but a correct black label clears nothing. |
| 3. The Lining Patch Lettering | ★★★★★ | Blobby or uneven lettering is a warning; good fakes copy the patch well. |
| 4. Hardware Engraving and Factory Names | ★★★★★ | A factory name or upside-down text is decisive, but it is rare, so a clean plate proves little. |
| Model Reference Before You Start | ★★★★★ | Tells you whether the serial checker applies; vintage dotted codes are a different format. |
| 5. The Serial Number Format and the Gucci Tool | ★★★★★ | Confirms format only; fakes copy genuine serials, so a good number proves nothing. |
| What Is Not a Tell | ★★★★★ | Canvas, stitching, studs, a 6+6 serial and a black label looked the same on genuine and fake bags. |
Model Reference Before You Start
Work out which era your bag is from before you read any number on it, because the numbers follow different formats.
- Modern leather-patch bags (Joy, Vintage Web, Nice, collaborations): a leather patch inside with "GUCCI made in Italy" and a printed number in two lines, either 6 + 4 or 6 + 6 digits. Newer bags also carry a black fabric label with a small data matrix. Our Gucci serial number checker is built for these formats.
- Vintage bags from the 1970s to 1990s (doctor bags, duffles, Supreme canvas): a leather tab with a code in dotted groups of digits, sometimes with a short extra number underneath. This is a different format and the serial checker does not fit it. A dotted vintage code is not a sign of a fake.
- Modern nylon and canvas duffles: the same black fabric label, and sometimes a leather patch as well.
For general hardware and canvas checks on other Gucci bags, see our Gucci bag guide and the GG Supreme and Ophidia guide. This guide stays on the Boston and duffle.

Counting Digits and Misspelled Words on Interior Tags
Open the bag and read the interior patch or tag as text. On the genuine bags we compared, the stamped number looks like a real code: no rising run of digits, and every word spelled correctly.
On more than one fake the "number" was a placeholder. One leather patch read 146311 on the first line and a line ending in the run 45678. A black fabric tag on another read "controllato 2345678", counting upward in the same way. A third fake carried a leather patch with the word spelled "controllafo".

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Stamped number | A real-looking code in two lines | A rising run of digits such as 45678 |
| Word on a patch or tag | Spelled correctly, or no word at all | "controllafo" or a similar typo |
| Black fabric tag | GUCCI, a code and a data matrix | "controllato" followed by a counting run |
Red flag
A rising run of digits or a typo in "controllato" on a patch or tag ended the inspection on every bag where we saw it. It is rare, but it is the cleanest tell we found on the Boston.
Worth knowing
Do not treat every "controllato" card as fake. Older genuine Gucci bags come with a small controllato card, and the genuine vintage doctor bag we checked had one that itself prints the digits 1234567890. The tell is a counting run or a typo on a patch or tag that should carry a real stamp, not the card on its own.

The Black Fabric Label Versus a White QR Label
Modern genuine bags carry a small black fabric label inside the lining, with GUCCI, a short code starting with a letter and a small data matrix. Our black label and QR code guide explains the years these labels cover, and we will not repeat it here.
What stood out on the fakes was a different label: white satin with "GUCCI FLORENCE made in Italy" and a large QR code. We saw this on more than one fake bag from different sellers, and not on any genuine bag in the sample we compared. A genuine bag from every year of production has not been checked by us, so we word this carefully: a white QR label is a strong warning sign, not a law.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Label colour | Black fabric | White satin |
| Code | Small data matrix and a short letter code | Large QR code |
| Text | GUCCI with a registered mark | "GUCCI FLORENCE made in Italy" |
Red flag
A white "GUCCI FLORENCE" label with a large QR code in place of the black fabric label was fake-only in the bags we checked.
Worth knowing
A correct black label proves very little. One fake we checked carried a normal-looking black label with a data matrix, so a good label does not clear a bag.

The Lining Patch Lettering
The leather patch inside the zip pocket is the second place to look. On the genuine bags we compared, the registered mark sits above GUCCI, the letters are crisp and evenly spaced, the "made in Italy" line is even, and a serial sits under the patch or on a second tag.

The fakes we flagged here had wide, blobby letters, a last letter that looks like a Q, an uneven "made in Italy" line, and in some cases no serial anywhere on the page. A patch stamped "GUCCI controllato" is also a warning on a modern bag.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Letters | Crisp, even deboss | Wide, blobby, uneven |
| Last letter of GUCCI | A clean I | Misshapen |
| Extra words | None, or a real serial tag | "controllato" stamped on a modern patch |
Worth knowing
We rate this check in the middle. Several fakes copied the patch well, and photo quality can make a good emboss look soft. Use it with the checks above, not on its own.
Hardware Engraving and Factory Names
Check the zip pull plate and the snaps. On the genuine pulls we saw, the engraving reads the right way up and the plate is clean. On one fake the text on the zip plate ran upside down relative to the logo, and on another bag a snap stud was stamped with a factory name, "GUANG TONG", where a brand mark belongs.

Red flag
A factory name or upside-down text on a plate or snap is decisive on the bag that shows it. It is also rare, so a clean plate tells you nothing.
The Serial Number Format and the Gucci Tool
The serial format is the check most readers reach for, and it is the weakest of the ones that apply to modern bags, because fakes copy genuine serials. In the bags we checked, genuine Boston bags carried a stamped two-line number of 6 + 4 or 6 + 6 digits, and some fakes carried perfectly plausible numbers of the same shape. A good-looking serial therefore does not prove anything.

Use the checker below for the format only. It tells you whether a 10 or 12 digit number fits Gucci's layout. It does not tell you the year or model of a Vintage Web style code, and it does not fit vintage dotted codes at all.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

What Is Not a Tell
These details looked the same on genuine bags and on fakes we checked, so do not rely on them.
- The GG canvas pattern and its alignment. Good copies line it up well.
- Stitching, base studs and strap clips. They varied on both sides.
- The round GUCCI studs on Vintage Web bags and the leather patch emboss. They appeared on genuine and fake bags.
- A 6 + 6 serial or a black data-matrix label. Both exist on genuine bags and on at least one fake.
- A dotted vintage code. It is the correct format on genuine vintage bags and is not a sign of a fake.
- An all-over GUCCI text lining. A genuine black duffle we checked has one.
- A controllato card on a vintage bag. Genuine vintage bags come with one.
When Fakes Look Right
Several fakes in the Boston and duffle group looked identical to genuine bags in photos, and we could not see why they failed. If the inside tags and hardware all look right, the bag may still be fake. The next step is the serial checker for format, then a professional opinion from clear photos of the interior patch, the black label, the zip plate and the outside.
Quick Authentication Checklist
- Decide whether the bag is modern or vintage before reading any number.
- Read every interior patch and tag as text: look for a rising run of digits or a typo.
- Look for the black fabric label with a data matrix, and treat a white GUCCI FLORENCE QR label as a warning.
- Compare the lining patch with a genuine one: crisp, even lettering.
- Check zip plates and snaps for upside-down text or a factory name.
- Run a 10 or 12 digit serial through the checker for format only.
- If everything looks right, get a professional opinion rather than trusting a clean photo.
One clear failure in checks 2, 3 or 5 is enough to walk away. A soft patch alone calls for a second opinion.

FAQ
How can I tell if my Gucci Boston bag is real?
Look inside first. Read the leather patch and tags for a rising run of digits or a typo in "controllato", and check the black fabric label. The outside canvas and stitching are poor evidence because good fakes copy them.
Where is the serial number on a Gucci Boston bag?
On modern bags it is stamped on a small leather tag inside the zip pocket, in two lines. Vintage bags carry a dotted code on a leather tab instead.
Does a QR label prove a Gucci bag is real?
No. Genuine modern bags carry a black fabric label with a small data matrix, but a fake in our checks carried a plausible black label too. A large white QR label with "GUCCI FLORENCE" was fake-only in the bags we checked.
Is a controllato card a sign of a fake Gucci?
No. Older genuine bags come with a controllato card, and the genuine card we checked prints the digits 1234567890. A rising run of digits or a typo on a patch or tag that should carry a real stamp is the warning.
Can the Gucci serial checker authenticate my Boston bag?
It checks the format of 10 and 12 digit numbers only. It cannot say a bag is real, and it does not fit vintage dotted codes.
Is a dotted code on a vintage Gucci bag fake?
No. Dotted groups of digits are the format on genuine vintage bags. Do not enter them into the serial checker.
Can a fake Gucci Boston look perfect in photos?
Yes. Some fakes were visually identical to genuine bags, which is why a professional check is worth it when the stakes are high.
What does "GUCCI FLORENCE made in Italy" on a white label mean?
In the bags we checked, it appeared on fakes and not on genuine bags, which carry a black fabric label. Treat it as a strong warning and get the bag checked.
