Serial Number Formats by Era
Gucci's serial format has changed over the decades. Knowing the format helps you read the tag correctly.
| Era | Format |
|---|---|
| Pre-1994 | No serial tag |
| Mid-1990s – early 2000s | 10 digits |
| 2000s – present | 6 digits + 6 digits |
| Post-2016 (select lines) | 6 + 6 digits + QR code |
Where to Find the Serial Tag
Location varies by model. All authentic Gucci bags are made in Italy — verify the "Made in Italy" stamp is present alongside the serial tag.
| Model | Tag location |
|---|---|
| Marmont (GG Marmont) | Leather patch on interior back wall, lower right |
| Dionysus | Leather patch sewn into lining on the interior side wall |
| GG Supreme canvas bags | Leather patch on the interior — often near the zipper pocket |
| Ophidia | Leather patch on interior back wall |
| Soho Disco | Leather patch inside the main compartment, usually on the back wall |
| Jackie 1961 | Leather patch inside the main compartment |
| Bamboo bag | Interior leather patch or stamp — may be faint on vintage pieces |
No serial tag on your bag?
Gucci bags made before roughly 1994 may not have a serial number tag — only a "Made in Italy" stamp, sometimes accompanied by a model name. This is normal for vintage pieces. If your bag is from the 2000s or later and has no tag, treat that as a red flag and seek professional authentication.
The Black Label and Its Year Code
Gucci bags made after about 2014 carry a second tag: a shiny fabric "black label" stitched inside near a zip or the top interior. It has an encrypted QR code and a printed number whose leading digits give the year of manufacture.
| Label number begins | Year |
|---|---|
| 019–020 | 2014 |
| 021–022 | 2015 |
| 023–024 | 2016 |
| 025–026 | 2017 |
| 027–028 | 2018 |
| 029–030 | 2019 |
| 031–032 | 2020 |
| 033–034 | 2021 |
| 035–036 | 2022 |
| 037–039 | 2023 |
| 040–042 | 2024 |
Two codes per year through 2022, then three from 2023. This table is from third-party authentication guides, not published by Gucci. The QR code beside the number is Gucci's own check and reads only in the official Gucci App (My Gucci → Gucci Tag).

Frequently asked questions
- Where is the serial number on a Gucci bag?
- On most modern Gucci bags, the serial number is on a leather patch sewn into the interior lining — typically on the back wall or side wall of the main compartment. The patch shows two rows: the top row is the 6-digit style number, the bottom row is the 6-digit serial number.
- How do I read a Gucci serial number?
- Modern Gucci serial numbers (2000s–present) have two rows of 6 digits each on the interior leather patch. The top row is the style/model number; the bottom row is the serial number. Older bags (mid-1990s to early 2000s) may have a single row of 10 digits. Vintage bags pre-1994 may have no serial tag at all.
- How do I tell what year my Gucci bag was made?
- On bags made after about 2014, the black fabric label stitched inside near a zip carries a number whose leading digits give the year: 019–020 is 2014, 021–022 is 2015, and so on up to 040–042 for 2024 (two codes per year through 2022, then three). The leather-patch serial itself carries no date. This year map comes from third-party guides, not from Gucci.
- What is the QR code on my Gucci black label and how do I scan it?
- It is an encrypted QR code that standard scanner apps cannot read. It reads only in the official Gucci App, under My Gucci → Gucci Tag, where it confirms the bag against Gucci’s own records. The printed number beside it is what carries the readable year of manufacture.
- Does a correct Gucci serial number mean the bag is authentic?
- No. Sophisticated counterfeits replicate correct serial formats and plausible black labels. Authenticity must be assessed by examining leather quality, hardware weight, stitching, logo precision, the black-label material and font, and interior lining alongside the serial number.
- My Gucci bag has no serial number — is it fake?
- Not necessarily. Gucci bags made before approximately 1994 may not have a serial number tag — only a 'Made in Italy' stamp. If your bag is vintage (pre-1994), the absence of a serial tag is normal. For bags from 2000 onwards, a missing serial tag is a significant red flag.
