The Mini Flap: A Classic Flap in Miniature
The Chanel Mini Flap takes the quilted flap with the interlocking CC turnlock and shrinks it to a small crossbody that holds a phone, a card holder and not much else. It comes as a Mini Rectangular (about 20 cm wide) and a Mini Square (about 17 cm), in dozens of colours and finishes, from plain lambskin to tweed, sequins and pearl-crush chains. A small price of entry to the house, and huge demand, mean a lot of both genuine bags and copies in resale.

Worth knowing
We did not find a repeatable, photo-visible counterfeit tell for the Mini Flap that we would stand behind, so this guide has no "fake tells" table. Most of the fakes we reviewed had convincing turnlocks, correct-looking stamps and a serial plate. Treat this page as a reference for what a genuine bag looks like, and get a professional opinion if a bag passes every check here and the price is significant.
Which Mini Flap Are You Looking At?
- Mini Rectangular Flap: the most common one, wider than tall.
- Mini Square Flap: an almost square, smaller bag with the same turnlock.
- Top-handle Mini Rectangular: a version with a rigid top handle plus a chain. We saw two of these among the genuine orders.
- Seasonal finishes: tweed, sequins, metallic leather, and versions with a pearl or metal ball on the chain. They share the layout but not the surface, so a plain-lambskin checklist does not apply line by line.
The reference number on a new bag's hang tag helps identify the model. On the tags we reviewed, the reference began with A69900 for the Mini Rectangular Flap.
The CC Turnlock
On genuine bags the turnlock sits centred on a rounded leather tab that follows the quilting, with the two Cs interlocked and a small rounded turn bar across the middle. The metal is smooth and evenly finished, and the hardware colour matches the chain and the other metal on the bag.
Inside the flap, the turnlock's back plate is a rectangle with an oval opening, two screws, and CHANEL and PARIS engraved down its sides. We saw this same plate on genuine bags and on most of the fakes, so it confirms nothing on its own.
Quilting and Leather
The diamonds on the genuine bags we reviewed are soft and slightly puffed, with stitching in a thread that matches the leather and lines that cross cleanly at each intersection. The quilting runs continuously from the flap over the front and around the body.
Lambskin marks and softens with use, so pucker and light scuffing on a worn bag are normal.
Chain, Grommets and Back Pocket
The chain runs through a metal ring set into each top corner of the bag, and leather is laced through the links. On the genuine bag above the leather matches the body colour and the ring sits flat against the quilting.
The back carries a flat quilted slip pocket. These details are easy to copy, and we saw the same layout on fakes, so use them to confirm the model rather than to clear the bag.
The Interior Stamp
On the recent genuine bags we reviewed, the interior carries a gold-foil stamp: CHANEL with a small registered mark, and the country of manufacture underneath. Both examples above read MADE IN FRANCE.
Two cautions. Genuine Mini Flaps are also made in other countries, so we saw MADE IN ITALY on genuine bags too, and the country line does not separate real from fake by itself. And the stamp is one of the things fakes copy best: several of the fakes we reviewed carried a well-formed CHANEL stamp with the registered mark.
Inside there is a zipped pocket whose pull is a small metal bar engraved CHANEL. This is also easy to copy.
Serial Plate and Hang Tag
Recent Mini Flaps carry a small metal plate in the lining with a CC and a short alphanumeric code, and this one still has its clear protective film. Older bags carry an interior sticker instead. A new bag may still carry its retail tag, which lists a season code, reference and colour. Tags are easy to move between bags or reproduce, so they support a bag's story but do not prove it.
Worth knowing
A code that decodes properly tells you when and where a bag claims to have been made. It does not tell you the bag is real, because counterfeiters copy genuine codes, and it says nothing about whether the plate is on the right bag.
What We Did and Did Not Find on Fakes
We looked at nine Mini Flap orders ruled fake and compared them with the genuine bags. The honest summary:
- Most looked convincing. Correct layout, correct turnlock plate, a CHANEL stamp with the registered mark, an engraved zip pull and a serial plate. Several would pass a quick photo check.
- Some were not what the listing said. One "Mini Flap" was a metallic bag with a sewn-in MADE IN CHINA label, and another looked like a larger flap with a different snap.
- One snap looked wrong. On one fake the interior snap looked like a generic magnetic lock stamped with hardware-maker text instead of CHANEL details. That is one bag, so it is something to look at, not a rule.
Authenticators commonly cite other tells, such as off-shape Cs on the turnlock, uneven quilting proportions and blurry stamp lettering. We have not confirmed those against our own fake set, so we list them as general market knowledge only.
What to Rely On, and What Not To
- Rely on: an all-round match to the genuine details above, close photos of the turnlock, stitching, chain rings, stamp and serial plate, and a serial that fits the era and the model.
- Do not rely on: the "made in" line, a crisp interior stamp, the engraved zip pull, the hang tag, the dust bag or box, or an authenticity card.
