The Chanel 22: A Different Kind of Chanel Bag
The Chanel 22 is a soft, slouchy drawstring bag in quilted leather, with the word CHANEL applied across the front in metal letters and a chain-and-leather strap. It is not a flap bag, so the Classic Flap advice about the turn-lock and the flap lining does not carry over. Chanel introduced it around 2021 to 2022, and our archive holds it in Mini, Small and Large.
This guide is built from our own archive: about twenty genuine Chanel 22 orders and two that were ruled fake. That is a small fake sample, and we say so plainly below. The genuine bags we reviewed came in shiny calfskin, caviar leather, denim and other finishes, with gold-tone, silver-tone and darker aged-metal hardware. We photographed the details that repeat.
Worth knowing
With only two fake orders to compare, we do not have a repeatable, photo-visible counterfeit tell for the Chanel 22, so this guide has no ranked "fake tells" table. It shows what genuine construction looks like. If a bag matches everything here and the money is real, a professional review of close-up photos is still the safe next step.
Sizes and Finishes
Sizes in our archive were Mini, Small and Large. Finishes we saw on genuine bags include shiny calfskin, caviar leather, washed denim with contrast stitching, suede and shearling, and metallic leathers. The hardware finish varies by bag, and the small metal parts on one bag should agree with each other: the lettering, the clasps, the chain and the plaque inside.
The Front Letters
The CHANEL lettering is made of individual metal letters that sit raised on the leather, not printed or stamped into it. On the gold-tone bag below the letters have a soft matte gold finish and clean, even edges, and they are laid over the quilting.
The two ruled-fake orders we looked at also had metal letters, so a raised gold-tone logo is not enough to call a bag genuine.
The Interior Label
Inside, the lining carries a stamped label. On the genuine Mini we photographed it reads "CHANEL" with a registered-trademark mark above "MADE IN ITALY", stamped in gold on the black lining.
The Serial Plaque
The Chanel 22 does not have the older holographic serial sticker. Instead, a small rectangular metal plaque is fixed inside the lining. It carries the interlocking CC logo and, beneath it, a code of eight characters. On the plaques we photographed, the code mixes letters and digits (for example F979APLK and P7K7X1X6), and the plaque finish matches the hardware, gold-tone on the gold-hardware bag and silver-tone on the silver-hardware one.

We cannot see a chip in a photo, and both of the ruled-fake orders we reviewed also had a plaque with a CC and a code, so the presence of a plaque proves nothing on its own.
The Chain, Clasps and Medallion
The strap is a chain with leather woven through it. The clasp is a small hook with the CC engraved on its face, in the same metal as the rest of the hardware.
On the denim bag, a round medallion hangs from the chain, with "CHANEL" and "PARIS" around a CC.
Denim and Shape
The denim version has a washed blue body with white and dark contrast stitching following the quilted diamonds, and a silver-tone finish on the hardware and letters.
The bag is soft and stands slightly slouched, with the top gathered by the drawstring. From the side, the body is slim.
The Retail Hangtag
New bags carry a printed retail hangtag. The tag we photographed reads "CHANEL 22 Mini Handbag" with the season "24P", the style code AS3980 and a barcode and QR code.
A hangtag is easy to copy and often removed, so treat it as a supporting detail only.
Photos to Ask a Seller For
Because the details above are all small and metallic, the photos that matter are close ones. Ask for:
- the front of the bag standing on a table, straight on, with the letters in frame
- a close-up of the letters at a slight angle, so you can see them sit raised
- the interior label, flat and in focus
- the serial plaque, with the CC logo and the full eight-character code readable
- both ends of the strap: the clasps and the medallion, if there is one
- the base and the four corners, where wear and glue marks show
A seller who cannot or will not provide these is telling you something, even if the bag is real.
What We Did and Did Not Find on Fakes
We looked at the two Chanel 22 orders that were ruled fake in our archive and compared them with genuine ones.
- They looked right in the details listed above. Both had raised metal letters, a "CHANEL MADE IN ITALY" interior label, and a plaque with the CC logo and an eight-character code.
- We could not find one detail that repeats. With only two fakes in the sample, we cannot say any single detail separates them reliably, so this guide does not list fake tells.
Beyond our own photos, authenticators commonly report other tells, such as letter spacing and chain weight. We have not confirmed those against our own fake set, so we mention them here only as general market knowledge.
What to Rely On, and What Not To
- Rely on: an all-round match to the genuine details above, and a seller who can show close, clear photos of the letters, interior label, plaque, clasps and chain.
- Do not rely on: the box, dust bag or hangtag, a serial plaque on its own, or a listing that calls the bag a "22" (some orders filed under a 22 name were other Chanel items).

Our archive holds Mini, Small and Large. The construction details are the same across sizes, so the same checks apply, but compare the measurements with Chanel's own listing for the size the seller claims.
Does a Chanel 22 have a serial number sticker?

Where is the plaque on a Chanel 22?
Inside the bag, fixed to the lining. In our photos it sits on the lining inside the bag. Look and feel along the lining if you cannot see it straight away.
Is a Chanel 22 without a plaque fake?
Not necessarily by itself, because plaques can be removed or hidden by the lining folds, but a bag sold as new and recent with no plaque anywhere is worth checking. A professional review is the safe next step.
Is the Chanel 22 the same as the Classic Flap?
