The Chanel WOC: Small Bag, Big Target
The Chanel Wallet on Chain, called the WOC by nearly everyone who sells or buys it, is a flat, wallet-sized flap bag on a leather-laced chain. It is the cheapest way into a quilted Chanel flap, it holds a phone and a few cards, and it is sold in more colours and finishes than almost any other Chanel item. High demand plus a low entry price for the house means a lot of resale listings, and a lot of copies.
This guide is built from what genuine WOCs actually show. We reviewed close to 85 authenticated WOC orders in our archive and only three that were ruled fake. That imbalance shapes the whole page: we can describe the genuine bag in detail, but we do not have enough confirmed fakes to give you a ranked list of counterfeit tells.
Worth knowing
We do not have a repeatable, photo-visible counterfeit tell for the WOC that held across independent fakes, so this guide has no "fake tells" table. One of the three fakes was not even a classic WOC, and another arrived with an authenticity card and dust bag. Treat this page as a reference for what a genuine bag looks like, and get a professional opinion if a bag passes every check and the money is real.
Which WOC Are You Looking At?
Listings use "WOC" loosely, so identify the model before you compare details.
- Classic Wallet on Chain: the quilted flap with a small metal CC turnlock, in lambskin or caviar leather. This is the bag this guide is about.
- Older Timeless CC wallet on chain: a large CC quilted into the flap in place of a metal turnlock. We saw one of these among the genuine orders.
- Seasonal and special WOCs: tweed, camellia-embossed, metallic and reissue-style versions exist. They share the chain and general layout but not the same front, so a Classic-WOC checklist does not apply line by line.
- Other chain wallets: Chanel has made several other small bags on chains, so a listing title that says "WOC" does not guarantee a Classic. One order in our fake pile was titled as a WOC but was a Gabrielle-style zip pouch.
Caviar Grain and Quilting
On the caviar WOCs we reviewed, the grain is a regular pebble, raised and rounded, with no flat or printed patches. The diamond quilting is stitched in thread that matches the leather, and the lines cross in a clean X at each intersection.
Two cautions. Lambskin WOCs are smooth, so the grain check does not apply to them. And leather softens and scuffs with use, so a worn bag can show flattened grain on the corners and edges without being fake.
The CC Turnlock
The Classic WOC carries a small, flat metal CC set in the middle of the flap, centred in one diamond of quilting. On the genuine bags we saw, the hardware colour (gold, silver or a darker finish) was consistent across the CC, the snap and the chain.
Photographs of the CC alone rarely decide anything, because well-made fakes copy the shape closely. Use it together with the stitching, stamp and snap rather than by itself.
The Interior Stamp
Open the flap and you should find the house stamp heat-pressed into the leather: CHANEL in capitals with a circled CC beneath. On the gold-hardware example above the foil is gold, and on the red-lined bag below it is silver, matching that bag's silver hardware. That colour match is a pattern in the examples we reviewed, not a rule we can back.
Stamps wear. On the older black caviar WOC we reviewed, the gold CHANEL under the snap had faded to a ghost, and that bag was genuine. A faint stamp on a used bag is not a red flag, and a crisp stamp proves nothing, because fake stamps are often crisp.
The Snap
The flap closes on a snap, and on the gold-tone genuine bag above the stud is engraved with CHANEL PARIS around the rim. Not every genuine WOC will show the same engraving, since hardware changes between seasons, so use this as one detail to compare and not a pass or fail test.
Serial Plate, Sticker and Hang Tag
Where a WOC keeps its serial depends on when it was made. Older bags carry a sticker inside, and one of our genuine recent bags carries a small metal plate in the lining, with a CC and an alphanumeric code. Bags from the era of embedded chips may not show a readable code at all. The hang tag above came on a new, unworn bag and shows the model name, a season code (24A), reference numbers, a QR code and an RFID mark. Tags like this are easy to move from bag to bag or to reproduce, so they support a story but do not prove a bag is real.
Worth knowing
A code that decodes properly tells you when and where a bag claims to have been made. It does not tell you the bag is real, because counterfeiters copy genuine codes. Use it as a consistency check against the colour, hardware and era.
The Chain and Where It Was Made
The strap is a chain with leather laced through it. On the bags we reviewed the leather passes through the links in a regular pattern and matches the bag's interior colour, or a deliberate contrast.
Country of manufacture varies. We saw MADE IN ITALY stamped along the interior edge on one genuine black lambskin WOC and MADE IN FRANCE on a genuine metallic tweed WOC, so a "made in" line is not a check that separates real from fake by itself.
What We Did and Did Not Find on Fakes
We found only three WOC orders ruled fake, which is too few to draw a pattern from. What they showed:
- Not all "WOC" fakes are Classic WOCs. One was a Gabrielle-style zip pouch with a rainbow-finish chain.
- Paperwork was present. One fake, a camellia-embossed flap wallet on chain, came with a dust bag and a black authenticity card. Cards and dust bags are not evidence of authenticity.
- One snap looked different. On that camellia fake, the snap stud carried a long letter-and-number string rather than CHANEL PARIS. That is a single example, so we list it as something to look at, not as a rule.
Beyond our own photos, authenticators commonly report other tells, such as wrong quilting proportions and off-shape CC letters. We have not confirmed those against our own fake set, so treat them as general market knowledge only.
What to Rely On, and What Not To
- Rely on: an all-round match to the genuine details above, a serial format that fits the era, and clear close photos of the stamp, snap, quilting, chain and interior.
- Do not rely on: the card, dust bag or box, the hang tag, the CC turnlock alone, the "made in" line, or a crisp interior stamp.

What does WOC stand for on a Chanel bag?
Wallet on Chain. It is a compact, wallet-sized flap bag with an attached chain strap, worn on the shoulder, across the body or carried as a clutch.
Is the Chanel WOC made in France or Italy?
Both appear on genuine bags. We saw MADE IN ITALY on one genuine WOC and MADE IN FRANCE on another, so the country alone does not tell you whether a WOC is real.
Does a genuine Chanel WOC have a serial number?
Most do, in the form that matches the era: an interior sticker on older bags, a metal plate on some recent ones, and embedded chips on the newest. If a bag has no readable code, check the era against our serial number guide before deciding anything.
Can I authenticate a WOC from its authenticity card?
No. Cards are easy to copy and to separate from the bag, and one of the fakes we reviewed came with a card and dust bag. Judge the bag itself.
Are caviar and lambskin WOCs authenticated the same way?
The layout, stamp, snap and chain checks are the same. The grain check only applies to caviar, because lambskin is smooth.
