Two Chanel Totes That Listings Keep Mixing Up
The Chanel Grand Shopping Tote, usually shortened to GST, is the big quilted caviar tote with a stitched-in CC across the front, a flat back pocket and two leather-woven chain handles. The Executive Tote (also sold as the Cerf Tote) is a different bag: a structured, unquilted leather tote with two rolled handles and a single CC turnlock on the front. They share a brand and a resale market, and very little else.
This guide is a reference. It shows what genuine examples of both bags look like, close up, so you can compare your own photos against them. It is built from genuine pieces that passed authentication with us, over many years of GSTs in black, beige and white, with silver and gold hardware.
Worth knowing
We do not publish a "fake tells" table for these bags. We found no repeatable, photo-visible counterfeit tell we would stand behind, and we have no fake Executive Tote on record at all. The fake Grand Shopping Tote we have reviewed was very convincing: correct engraved grommets, a CHANEL zip pull and a serial sticker. So this page tells you what genuine looks like and how far photos can take you, not how to pass a bag in five minutes.

Which Bag Do You Have?
- Grand Shopping Tote (GST): quilted caviar leather, a large CC stitched into the front, a flat quilted pocket on the back, and two chain-and-leather handles that run through metal rings in the top corners. It was made in black, beige, white and more, with silver or gold hardware.
- Petite Shopping Tote (PST): the same design in a smaller size. It is not the same bag, and the details below are written about the GST.
- Executive Tote (Cerf Tote): unquilted leather, two rolled handles, a CC turnlock on the front tab and small metal studs under the base. It has no chain.
- Chanel Shopping Bag with a microchip: a current-era tote that carries a chip and is covered in our serial codes and NFC chip guide, not here.
Check this first, because a lot of "Chanel tote" listings are one of the other bags. Chanel also makes denim totes, Deauville totes (see our Deauville guide) and chevron totes, and none of them are a GST.
The Grand Shopping Tote Overall

On the genuine bags we reviewed, the diamonds are even and the stitching is straight in a thread that matches the leather. The CC is a separate stitched shape that sits slightly proud of the quilting, centred on the front. Caviar leather has a grain of small round pebbles, and it stays that way across the whole bag, including the base and the back pocket.
Worn bags are normal. Corners rub, the base loses some grain and the leather softens. That is not a counterfeit sign.
The Rue Cambon Grommets

The chain handles run through a metal ring at each top corner. On the genuine bags the ring is engraved with the Chanel address, 31 RUE CAMBON PARIS, round the top and CHANEL round the bottom, and it sits flat against the leather. The engraving is crisp and evenly spaced, and the hardware colour matches the chain.
Do not treat this as a pass. A fake GST we reviewed copied the grommet engraving correctly, so a good ring tells you the bag has not failed one check, nothing more.
The Zip Pull Changes With the Era

Zip pulls on genuine GSTs are not all the same. The silver and gold pieces above are flat bars engraved CHANEL; an older white bag in our examples has a round gold disc with a CC on it. Both are genuine. A flat bar, a round CC disc and a bar with a small CC on the back have all turned up on genuine bags, depending on the year, so a pull that does not match a photo you saw online is not a verdict either way.
The Interior Tag: Italy and France Both Appear

Most GSTs we reviewed carry a stitched leather patch inside, with CHANEL, a registered mark and MADE IN ITALY in gold or silver foil. The patch above is a typical example.

But "Made in Italy" is not a rule. An older genuine white GST is stamped MADE IN FRANCE on the lining instead. A bag with the France stamp is not automatically fake, and a bag with the Italy patch is not automatically real. The wording and the style of the tag change with the era, and fakes copy tags well.
The Serial Sticker

Older GSTs carry a small sticker with a CC logo and a number, usually stuck on a leather tab near the top zip or under the lining flap. We have blurred the number above.
What the number can and cannot tell you is covered in our Chanel serial number guide and the serial codes and NFC chip guide. You can also run it through the Chanel date code checker to see which period it points to.
Worth knowing
A code that decodes properly does not make a bag genuine. Counterfeiters copy real-looking stickers, and the sticker can be moved between bags. A fake GST we reviewed had a serial sticker. The sticker, the authenticity card and the dust bag are context, not proof.
The Executive Tote (Cerf Tote)

The Executive Tote is a structured leather tote with two rolled handles and a gold CC turnlock set on a tab at the front. The leather is a soft grain, not quilted, and there is no chain.

On the genuine example we reviewed, the interior zip has a flat gold bar pull engraved CHANEL, a CHANEL MADE IN ITALY patch inside and a serial sticker on a tab. Small domed metal studs protect the base corners. We have only genuine Executive Totes to show you. We have no counterfeit one on record, so we cannot say which details copies get wrong.
What Photos Cannot Prove
- A flawless CC, correct grommets and a CHANEL zip pull do not make a bag genuine. A fake GST we reviewed had all three.
- Country of origin and the style of the interior tag change with the era and do not separate real from fake.
- The serial sticker, the authenticity card and the dust bag can all be copied or moved to another bag.
- Gold or silver hardware, and the grain of the caviar, look different in every light. Judging them from one listing photo is guessing.
- A listing photo cannot show the feel of the leather, the weight of the hardware or the smell of the bag.
If your photos match everything on this page and the price still looks too good, treat that as a reason to get a proper check, not as comfort.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
A GST costs real money on the resale market, and the fakes that reach buyers are the good ones. If a bag passes this reference and you are about to pay, or you already did, the reliable next step is to have the bag reviewed from clear photos by authenticators who handle Chanel every day. Authenticate your Chanel bag and get a verdict with a Certificate of Authenticity you can show a seller, a marketplace or an insurer.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction of your Chanel against verified references, from $25. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
Authenticate My Chanel →If you also own a flap, our guides to the Classic Flap, Mini Flap and 25 Hobo work the same way.
FAQ
What is the difference between the Chanel GST and the Executive Tote?
The Grand Shopping Tote is a quilted caviar tote with a stitched CC and chain-and-leather handles. The Executive Tote (Cerf Tote) is an unquilted leather tote with rolled handles and a CC turnlock. They are separate bags with different details.
How do I tell if my Chanel Grand Shopping Tote is real?
Compare it with the genuine photos here: engraved Rue Cambon grommets, a stitched CC, even quilting, a CHANEL zip pull and an interior tag with a serial sticker. Then be careful, because a fake we saw copied all of those. A professional check from photos is the dependable way to be sure.
Is "Made in Italy" required on a genuine GST?
No. Most we reviewed say MADE IN ITALY on an interior patch, but an older genuine white GST is stamped MADE IN FRANCE. The country line alone does not separate real from fake.
Do all genuine GSTs have the same zip pull?
No. We saw flat CHANEL bar pulls in silver and gold, and an older bag with a round gold CC disc. All were genuine, so the pull style varies by year.
What does the grommet say on a GST?
The ring where the handle is attached is engraved 31 RUE CAMBON PARIS along one side and CHANEL along the other. It is the right engraving to expect, but fakes copy it, so it is not decisive.
Where is the serial number on a Chanel GST?
On older bags it is a small sticker with a CC logo and a number, usually on a leather tab at the top zip or under the lining flap. See our serial number guide for how to read it.
Can a serial sticker prove a Chanel bag is authentic?
No. A real-looking sticker can be copied or moved, so it only tells you what period the code points to.
Is a Chanel Executive Tote a GST?
No. The Executive Tote has no quilting and no chain handles. If a listing calls an unquilted tote a Grand Shopping Tote, the listing is wrong about what the bag is.
