Does Balenciaga Have Serial Numbers?
Not in the way Louis Vuitton or Chanel do. Search "Balenciaga serial number" and you will be told that every bag carries a unique code that dates it and that you can look it up. That is not what we see inside genuine Balenciaga bags. What a Balenciaga bag carries is a style number, usually followed by a colour code, a letter and a final group of digits, stamped or embossed on a leather tab, a metal plate or the lining seam. None of it is a production date. Balenciaga keeps no public lookup, so any website that "decodes" the year from it is guessing.
The number still has uses. It tells you which model the bag is meant to be, it shows which era of tag the bag claims to belong to, and a number laid out the wrong way for its era is a reason to look harder. What it cannot do is clear a bag. The fakes we review carry tabs and plates laid out like the genuine ones, and some carry numbers that also turn up on other fakes. This guide shows where the number is on each type of bag, how to read it, what we saw go wrong on counterfeits, and which checks to run next.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction of your Balenciaga against verified references, from $25. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
Authenticate My Balenciaga →What to check, ranked by reliability
| Checkpoint | Reliability | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 3. The Wording Under the Code | ★★★★★ | A wrong language line or letters inside the six-digit style number were on counterfeits and not on the genuine tabs we compared, but most fakes get this right. |
| 4. Numbers That Repeat Across Bags | ★★★★★ | A full tab or plate number that recurs on other counterfeits is a strong warning, but you need known examples to compare with. |
| 1. Where the Number Sits on Each Era of Bag | ★★★★★ | A tag style that contradicts the hardware and leather era is worth a second look, but counterfeits copy the tab and plate layouts. |
| 2. The Format of the Code | ★★★★★ | The layout is easy to copy, so a correct format confirms the layout only. |
| What the Number Does and Does Not Prove | ★★★★★ | The number names the model and tag style, not the bag or its age, and it cannot clear a bag on its own. |
Where the Number Sits on Each Era of Bag
Balenciaga has used several tag styles on its bags. The order below is the one most references and our own reviews agree on, but the boundaries between eras are approximate and Balenciaga has never published them. Check the position against the hardware and leather of the bag, not against a year you have been told.
| Style of tag | Where it is | What it reads (examples from genuine bags) |
|---|---|---|
| Older leather tab | Sewn into the lining seam or the interior zip pocket on classic Motorcycle-family bags (City, Work, Giant hardware versions) | Six digits, a space or dot, four digits; sometimes a second line of six digits; "made in italy" in lower case. For example 173084 2372, then 502752 |
| Metal plate on a leather mount | Inside the main compartment of many City and Classic bags, stitched to the lining | BALENCIAGA PARIS, then N° and a short number with a letter, then the six-digit style number. For example N°01447 H 115748 |
| Embossed tab with two languages | Sewn into the lining seam | Style, colour, letter, then a final group of digits, then MADE IN ITALY over FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE. For example 115748 4020 F 535269 |
| Stamp along the lining seam or binding | Inside the bag on recent models (Hourglass, Everyday, Le Cagole and similar) | The same style, colour, letter and final group, stamped in the leather, often with MADE IN ITALY at one end |

The plate and the tab can sit on the same bag. On a City that carried both, the letter on the plate was the same as the letter in the tab code. We do not know what the letter stands for, and Balenciaga does not say, so treat it as something to compare rather than decode.

On recent bags the number is often not on a tab at all. It is stamped into the lining leather along a seam, which makes it easy to miss and hard to photograph.

If you cannot find any tab, plate or stamp, look along every interior seam and under the zip pocket before drawing a conclusion. Tabs do get cut off or hide inside a seam, and a missing number is not a verdict by itself. Our Balenciaga City guide walks through how the tag, the hardware and the leather should fit together for that model.
Worth knowing
Balenciaga shoes and clothing do not use these tags. Sneakers carry a size row and style code inside the shoe, covered in our [Balenciaga sneakers guide](/blog/authenticate-balenciaga-sneakers-guide). Clothing carries neck, care and composition labels, covered in our [Balenciaga clothing guide](/blog/authenticate-balenciaga-clothing-guide).
The Format of the Code
Read the code in groups, in the order it is printed.
- Style number: six digits. It names the model, not the individual bag. The same style number turns up on every bag of that model, genuine or fake.
- Colour group: four digits in the embossed-tab and seam-stamp formats. It identifies the colour; 1000 appeared on black bags, for example.
- Letter: a single letter in the embossed-tab and seam-stamp formats. Its meaning is not published.
- Final group: a run of digits at the end. Do not read it as a serial. The same final group appeared on bags of different models and colours in our reviews, genuine and counterfeit.
The older tabs are simpler: a six-digit style number and a four-digit group, sometimes with a second six-digit number on a line below.
Prefer the full-screen version? Our Balenciaga serial number checker runs the same format check. Enter the first line of the tab with the groups separated by spaces, for example 115748 4020 F 535269, and leave out the MADE IN ITALY lines. On a bag with a plate, enter the six-digit style number.
Worth knowing
A code that matches a format proves the layout, not the bag. The checker reports which tag style the layout fits. It does not read a date, because the code holds none.
The Wording Under the Code
The text under the number is easier to get wrong than the number, because it is a fixed phrase that someone has to type into a stamp. On the embossed tabs we reviewed from genuine bags, the line reads MADE IN ITALY and the line below reads FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE. Older tabs read "made in italy" in lower case and carry no second language.

On one counterfeit the French line was replaced by FABRICA EN ITALIA, a mix of Spanish and Italian that does not appear on the genuine tabs we compared. Other counterfeits we saw stamped letters into the style number itself, which should be six digits on its own.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Style number | Six digits, then a clear gap or dot | Letters mixed into the style number on one counterfeit |
| Language line | FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE under MADE IN ITALY on embossed tabs | FABRICA EN ITALIA on one counterfeit |
| Emboss | Blind-embossed, no ink | Gold lettering on one counterfeit tab we reviewed |
| Layout | One number per group, evenly spaced | Groups run together or have the wrong length |
Red flag
A language line that is not FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE on a tab that otherwise copies the embossed format, or a style number with letters inside the six digits. Neither appeared on the genuine tabs we compared.
Numbers That Repeat Across Bags
A style number is shared by every bag of a model, so the style alone tells you nothing. What gives some counterfeits away is a full number that keeps coming back. On several different counterfeit City bags we found the same older tab, 115748 3444, stamped in the same layout. Two counterfeits also carried the same plate number, N°0754 C over 115748.

On the counterfeit plates we compared, the lettering looked heavier and brighter than the fine, shallow engraving on the genuine plates. Lighting changes how engraving looks in photos, so use this only as a reason to compare in person.
Red flag
A City tab or plate whose numbers match a pattern that appears on other counterfeits, such as 115748 3444 or N°0754 C. A repeat does not prove a given bag is fake on its own, because a factory may also copy numbers from a genuine bag, but it is a strong warning and calls for the other checks below.
Worth knowing
Balenciaga does not publish a register of numbers, so you cannot confirm that a number belongs to a particular bag. If two different bags show the same full tab, treat both with suspicion.
What the Number Does and Does Not Prove
| What a matching number tells you | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| The model the bag claims to be | That the bag is genuine |
| Which tag style it is meant to have | The year or month it was made |
| That the layout is plausible for its era | That the number belongs only to this bag |
A bag with a correctly laid out tab can still be a fake, and a genuine bag can show a faint or partly worn tab. The number is a way to catch contradictions: a modern embossed tab on hardware that belongs to an early City, or an older tab format on a bag with 2020s styling, is worth a second look. It is not a way to approve a bag.
Which Checks to Run Next
The checks that carry weight on a Balenciaga bag are the ones a factory cannot cheaply copy: the leather, the hardware, the stitching and how the whole bag fits together for its model. Start with the guide for your model: the City, Hourglass, Le Cagole or Rodeo. Then compare the tab, the plate and the zip pulls against genuine photos of the same model and era.
Quick Authentication Checklist
- Find the tab, plate or seam stamp and note which style it is
- Read the code in groups: style number, colour group, letter, final group
- Check that the style number is six plain digits with no letters in it
- Check the language line: MADE IN ITALY over FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE on embossed tabs
- Compare any City number with the patterns that repeat on counterfeits
- Check that the tag style fits the hardware and leather of the bag
- Run the model-specific checks before trusting any of the above
A tag that fails check 3 or 4 is a strong reason to stop. A tag that passes all of them tells you only that the layout is plausible.
FAQ
Where is the serial number on a Balenciaga bag?
Look for a leather tab sewn into an interior seam or zip pocket, a metal plate stitched to the lining, or a stamp along the lining seam on recent bags. The number on it is a style number with colour and batch groups, not a unique serial.
Does Balenciaga have serial numbers?
Not a unique, dated serial. Balenciaga bags carry a style number and extra groups of digits and a letter. They do not encode a production date, and Balenciaga keeps no public lookup.
What does the number inside a Balenciaga bag mean?
The first six digits are the style number for the model. Later tabs add a four-digit colour group, a letter and a final group of digits. Balenciaga has not published what the letter and final group stand for, so treat them as batch references rather than a serial.
How can I tell how old my Balenciaga bag is from the number?
You cannot read an exact year from it. The style of tag (older tab, plate, embossed tab or seam stamp) gives you a rough era, which you should compare with the hardware and leather of the model. Our Balenciaga City guide covers how the eras differ.
Can I check a Balenciaga serial number online?
There is no official lookup. A checker can confirm that the number is laid out like a genuine tag, and nothing more, so a pass does not mean the bag is real.
What should be written under the number on a Balenciaga tab?
On the embossed tabs we compared from genuine bags, MADE IN ITALY sits above FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE. Older tabs read "made in italy" in lower case with no second language. A different second line, such as FABRICA EN ITALIA, is a warning sign.
Is a Balenciaga bag fake if the number matches another bag?
It is a strong warning. Style numbers are shared by every bag of a model, so the style alone proves nothing, but a full tab or plate that appears on other bags suggests that at least one of them was copied.
How much does Balenciaga authentication cost?
LuxeDetect's handbag authentication starts at $25 with a 24-hour turnaround, and the result comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It checks the bag itself rather than the tag alone.
