Balenciaga Serial Number Checker

Check a Balenciaga tag number against the documented format for its era, and see which tag style your bag should carry. Balenciaga encodes no production date — this checks the format, not the year.

Enter the number from the interior tag

On Motorcycle-family bags (First, City, Work, Velo) it is on a small leather tab riveted inside the interior zip pocket. On bags from 2016 on it is on a plastic-backed white strip near the interior seam. Enter the 6-digit style number, and the shorter control number after it if there is one. Example: 115748-1234.

A valid tag number is the easiest part for a counterfeiter to copy.

Balenciaga tag formats are documented, the number carries no date, and there is no public database to check it against. The format check is a floor. Get a professional authentication →

Tag Style by Era

What the interior tag should look like depends on when the bag was made. Knowing the era stops you calling a genuine bag fake for missing a feature it never had.

Around 2005 – 2016Riveted leather tab
2016 – presentPlastic-backed strip + card

The number has no date in it — and that is normal

Unlike Louis Vuitton date codes or Coach creed codes, a Balenciaga tag number does not encode a month or year. Balenciaga has never published a mapping and keeps no public lookup. If a seller tells you the number “dates the bag to 2013,” that is not something the number can do. Date a Balenciaga bag from the hardware finish, the tassel and mirror style, the leather, and the shape of the bale and buckles instead.

Where the Number Is

ModelTag location
Classic City / First / WorkLeather tab riveted inside the interior zip pocket
Velo / Day / Metallic EdgeLeather tab on the interior pocket wall, or a printed strip on newer pieces
Hourglass / Neo Classic (2019+)Printed strip near the interior seam, plus an authenticity card
Le Cagole (2022+)Printed strip near the seam; card and, on some, a scannable element

On newer bags, the card must match

Bags from 2016 on ship with a separate authenticity card. The number on the card and the number on the bag must be identical. A recent bag whose seller cannot produce the matching card has a gap worth asking about.

The code checked out. What next?

Frequently asked questions

Where is the serial number on a Balenciaga bag?
On Motorcycle-family bags (First, City, Work, Velo) it is on a small leather tab riveted or sewn inside the interior zip pocket, embossed with a 6-digit style number and sometimes a shorter control number. On bags from 2016 onward it is printed on a plastic-backed white strip near the interior seam, and those bags also carry a separate authenticity card.
Can a Balenciaga serial number tell me what year my bag was made?
No. Balenciaga does not encode a production date into these numbers and keeps no public lookup. Any tool or seller that gives you a specific year from a Balenciaga serial is guessing. The number identifies the style and, on tab-era bags, a production control reference with no published meaning.
What is the difference between the style number and the control number?
The 6-digit style number identifies the model and colourway. The shorter 3-to-4 digit control number on the leather tab is a production reference Balenciaga has never explained publicly, so it cannot be resolved to a factory, batch, or date. Newer bags replace it with a longer alphanumeric control string.
Does a valid Balenciaga serial number mean the bag is authentic?
No. The tag formats are documented and counterfeiters print valid-looking numbers, so a correct format is a floor, not a verdict. On a Balenciaga bag the decisive checks are the embossing depth and font on the leather tab, the rivet backs, the leather grain and temper, and the zipper hardware — none of which a number check can see.
My older Balenciaga has just a printed paper tag and no leather tab. Is it fake?
Not necessarily. The earliest Motorcycle bags (roughly 2001 to 2005) used a small printed tag in the interior zip pocket with no leather tab and no barcode. A plain printed tag is correct for that era. Date and authenticate an early bag from the leather, the hardware, the mirror, and the tassels rather than the tag alone.
