Does Bottega Veneta Have Serial Numbers?

Yes, in a sense, and it is not where most people look. Bottega Veneta bags carry almost no logo outside, so the proof sits inside. When people ask about the serial number on a Bottega Veneta bag, they mean the code printed on a small white woven tag sewn into the lining, headed "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED". A separate label or plaque reads "BOTTEGA VENETA MADE IN ITALY". There is no "made in Italy code": that phrase is printed text, not a number.

The code is useful in a limited way. It shows which era of tag the bag claims to belong to, and it is the number a card or digital certificate should agree with. It is not a date on recent bags, the house keeps its meaning private, and it cannot be looked up. The counterfeits we review carry the same kind of tag with a code in the same layout, and some carry the same code as other counterfeits. This guide shows where the code sits on each type of bag, how to read it, and what it can and cannot prove. For the full inspection, start with our Bottega Veneta authentication guide.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction of your Bottega Veneta against verified references, from $25. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.

What to check, ranked by reliability

CheckpointReliabilityWhat it tells you
4. Codes That Repeat Across Bags★★★★★A code printed on other counterfeit bags is a strong warning, but you need known examples to compare with and a clean code clears nothing.
1. Where the Code Is on Each Type of Bag★★★★★A recent bag with no tag deserves a question, but tags get cut out and counterfeits carry one in the right place.
2. The Format of the Code★★★★★A letter, eight digits and a letter is the genuine layout on recent tags, and counterfeits print the same layout.
3. The Made in Italy Labels and Plaques★★★★★The labels should be present and read correctly, but they are text, not a code, and are copied.
What the Code Does and Does Not Prove★★★★★The code shows the era of tag, not the bag or its age, and it cannot clear a bag on its own.

Where the Code Is on Each Type of Bag

On recent bags the tag is a small white woven strip, usually sewn into a lining seam. It is easy to miss because it is small and often folded flat against the lining.

Where we found it on the pieces we reviewed:

  • Knot and Jodie style bags: hanging from the lining seam beside the zip. Our Jodie guide shows the bag it belongs to.
  • Pouch and Cassette bags: inside the main compartment, often near the zip or the frame. See the Pouch guide and the Cassette bag.
  • Wallets and small goods: inside a card slot or pocket, sometimes running vertically down a strip.
  • Intrecciato crossbody and hobo bags: in a pocket seam or against the lining near the zip. Our Sardine bag guide covers one such model.

A bag can also have no tag in the photos you are shown because it is folded into a seam or has been cut out. A missing tag on a recent bag is a question to ask the seller, not a verdict. Genuine bags also carry a separate brand label, covered in section 3.

The Format of the Code

The recent tag reads "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED" with the code below it. On the genuine tags we could read in full, the code is a letter, eight digits and a closing letter, for example one beginning with B, P or S and ending with another letter. Bottega Veneta does not say what the groups mean, so do not try to read a date, a factory or a colour out of it.

The ink on genuine tags varies. Most we reviewed were grey or black, and one bag printed its code in violet-blue. Ink colour alone is not a reason to reject a tag.

Older bags carry an older label, and it comes in more than one layout. One genuine older label we reviewed is cream, headed "CERTIFICATO DI ORIGINALITA" with the English sentence below, then three lines of letters and digits.

Third-party guides describe a two-line version with a style number and colour code on the first line and an "EPEV" line on the second that they read as a year. Bottega Veneta has not confirmed that reading, and it does not apply to the modern tag at all. The main guide linked above shows the older labels and what went wrong on counterfeit versions.

Prefer the full-screen version? Our Bottega Veneta serial number checker runs the same format check. Enter a modern code as printed, with no spaces, for example B01234567X. The older two-line layouts it reads are the ones described above, so a different older layout may not parse.

Worth knowing

A code in the right layout proves the layout, not the bag. The checker can tell you a code looks like a modern tag code. It cannot tell you the code belongs to your bag.

The Made in Italy Labels and Plaques

A genuine Bottega Veneta bag usually carries at least one more item that says MADE IN ITALY, in addition to the code tag. These are not codes, but they are the other things people mean when they ask about a "made in Italy tag".

Which of these a bag has depends on the model and the year: a woven label, a pressed lining logo, or a plaque. Our main guide covers the brand label and the country-of-origin check in detail. The point here is only that a bag can carry both a code tag and a separate "made in Italy" label, and that they are different things.

Codes That Repeat Across Bags

A genuine code should belong to one bag. The most useful thing we found about the counterfeits is that some of them reuse a code. The same code printed on counterfeit bags of different models and colours turned up in our reviews, and our main guide lists the ones to look out for.

The tag above looks like a genuine tag: white woven strip, correct heading, letter, eight digits and a closing letter. That is the point. A counterfeit can have a flawless tag, so the layout tells you nothing. A repeated code is the one thing that can.

Red flag

A code that appears on other counterfeit bags, such as the ones listed in our main guide. Copying a code from a real bag is cheap, so a repeat shows that at least one of the bags is not genuine.

Worth knowing

You can only catch a repeated code if you can compare it with known counterfeits. A clean-looking code that matches nothing known clears nothing.

What the Code Does and Does Not Prove

What a correct code tells youWhat it cannot tell you
The bag has a tag in a plausible layout for its eraThat the bag is genuine
Which era of tag it claimsThe year of manufacture on a recent bag
That a card or certificate can be compared with itThat the code belongs to this bag

Some recent lines replace the paper authenticity card with a digital certificate. The code on the tag should agree with whatever card or certificate comes with the bag, and a card that does not match is a serious problem. A matching card is a mild positive only, because counterfeit card-and-bag sets exist.

The checks that decide a Bottega Veneta bag are the intrecciato weave, the stitching, the leather and the hardware, covered in the main guide. Use the code to catch contradictions, not to approve a bag.

Quick Authentication Checklist

  • Find the tag in the lining and read the full code
  • Check the layout: heading "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED", then a letter, eight digits and a closing letter on recent bags
  • Check that the tag style fits the age and model of the bag
  • Look for a separate brand label or plaque reading MADE IN ITALY
  • Compare the code with any card or digital certificate
  • Compare the code with known counterfeit codes
  • Run the weave, stitching, leather and hardware checks

A repeated code is a strong reason to stop. A tag that passes every format check tells you only that the layout is plausible.

FAQ

Where is the serial number on a Bottega Veneta bag?

On a small white woven tag headed "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED", usually sewn into a lining seam inside the bag. On wallets it may be in a card slot. The code on it is a letter, eight digits and a closing letter on recent bags.

Does Bottega Veneta have serial numbers?

Bags carry a code on the Originality Certified tag, but it is not a public, dated serial. Bottega Veneta does not publish what the code means and there is no lookup for it.

What do the numbers on a Bottega Veneta tag mean?

The house keeps the meaning of the recent code private, so it cannot be read as a date, factory or colour. Older labels in a two-line layout are described by third-party guides as holding a style number, a colour code and an EPEV year line, but Bottega Veneta has not confirmed this.

How can I tell how old my Bottega Veneta bag is?

Not from the code on recent bags. The style of tag gives you a rough era, and the hardware, leather and model give you more. Older cream Certificato di Originalita labels belong to older bags.

Is there a made in Italy code on a Bottega Veneta bag?

No code, only text. Genuine bags carry a brand label, a pressed lining logo or a plaque reading BOTTEGA VENETA over MADE IN ITALY, in addition to the code tag.

Can I check a Bottega Veneta serial number online?

Only for format. No brand lookup exists. A checker can tell you whether a code looks like a modern tag code, which does not confirm that the bag is genuine.

Do fake Bottega Veneta bags have the Originality Certified tag?

Often yes. The counterfeits we reviewed commonly had a tag in the right layout, and some reused a code from other counterfeits. A tag is expected on a genuine recent bag, so its presence proves little.

How much does Bottega Veneta authentication cost?

LuxeDetect's handbag authentication starts at $25 with a 24-hour turnaround, and the result comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It checks the bag itself rather than the tag alone.
