Why Balenciaga Speed and Track Sneakers Are Hard to Authenticate From Photos
Balenciaga sneakers are among the most copied shoes we see. The Speed sock sneaker, the chunky Track and the Triple S are all sold second-hand in large numbers, and the fakes are built to be photographed: the BALENCIAGA print on the knit, the embossed lettering on the outsole and the heel, the "MADE IN ITALY" label inside the collar, the ART NO. line on Track labels and even the kids' labels that say "MADE IN SERBIA" are all copied closely. A guide that tells you to check the logo font or the sole embossing would be sending you to details the factories have already matched.
What we have found that does separate some fakes from every genuine pair is arithmetic. The size row on the inside label (UK, EUR, USA, JP) is a conversion for one specific pair, and on genuine pairs the numbers agree with each other. A minority of fakes, roughly one in five of the fake tags we can read, print a row that cannot be right. Most fakes print a consistent row, so this is a one-directional check: a bad row is a strong warning, and a good row proves nothing.
This guide is built around that check, a weaker label check that applies to the Track only, and a reference of genuine details so you know what to photograph. Speed and Track are the core. We use the Triple S only as an example, because we have fewer genuine Triple S examples to compare. Everything here describes what genuine pairs in our own archive show, not Balenciaga's published size system.
What to check, ranked by reliability
| Checkpoint | Reliability | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The Size Row on the Tag Must Agree With Itself | ★★★★★ | A UK, EUR and USA row that breaks the genuine conversion is a strong fake sign, but most fakes print a correct row and pass. |
| 2. The Track Tongue Label | ★★★★★ | A generic barcode label in place of the Balenciaga label is a fake sign on the Track only; a normal label proves nothing. |
| 3. What Genuine Pairs Look Like: Logo, Sole and Labels | ★★★★★ | Shows a sloppy copy, but good fakes reproduce the logo, sole embossing and label wording. |
| Model Reference Before You Start | ★★★★★ | Rules out a mislabelled model; will not catch a good fake. |
| What the Box, Dust Bag and Tags Do and Do Not Prove | ★★★★★ | Packaging is context only; it helps only when its size matches the shoe. |
Worth knowing
This guide rests on a limited set of genuine and counterfeit examples. It documents one size-label check and one Track label check, plus reference photos of genuine details. It is not a complete list of fake tells, and a pair that passes every check here is still unproven.
Model Reference Before You Start
Listings often mix up Balenciaga's sneaker families, and the labels differ between them, so identify the model first.
- Speed (Speed Trainer, Speed 2.0, Speed LT): a stretch-knit sock sneaker with a BALENCIAGA print on the side, a moulded sole with the name embossed at the heel and underneath, and a size label inside the collar reading UK, EUR, USA, JP, MADE IN ITALY and WWW.BALENCIAGA.COM on the genuine pairs we have seen.
- Track: a layered mesh, leather and rubber sneaker with a "track" plate on the heel, a BB mark on the heel tab and a label inside the tongue with the website, MADE IN CHINA, ART NO. 542023 on the original Track, and the size rows beside small icons.
- Triple S: a thick multi-layer sole, a "triple s" tongue patch and a label marked TRIPLE S MEN or TRIPLE S WOMEN with LEATHER FREE, a made-in line and an ART NO. This guide uses it only to show that the size arithmetic holds there too.
- Kids' pairs carry labels with size ranges (for example UK 8-8.5, EUR 25-26) and MADE IN SERBIA. Fakes copy these, and the size check below does not apply to them.
Runner, 3XL, Arena and Race Runner sneakers, and Balenciaga's heels and slides, are outside this guide.
The Size Row on the Tag Must Agree With Itself
Find the label inside the shoe: in the collar of a Speed, and inside the tongue of a Track or Triple S. It lists a size in four systems. Use the first three, UK, EUR and USA. EUR is the base size printed on the shoe, and the UK and USA numbers on a genuine pair follow it in a fixed way:
- Women's pairs: UK is EUR minus 33, and USA is EUR minus 30. The USA number is always 3 above the UK number.
- Men's pairs: UK is EUR minus 34, and USA is EUR minus 33. The USA number is always 1 above the UK number.
- Adult UK sizes are whole numbers. We have not seen a half UK size on an adult genuine tag.
Because men's and women's sizes overlap on the EUR scale, the same EUR number gives different UK and USA numbers, so what matters is that the row is consistent for one set. A women's EUR 39 reads UK 6, USA 9. A men's EUR 39 would read UK 5, USA 6. A row that takes its UK from one set and its USA from another does not exist on a genuine tag.
| Genuine rows we have read | UK | EUR | USA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women's | 3 | 36 | 6 |
| Women's | 4 | 37 | 7 |
| Women's | 5 | 38 | 8 |
| Women's | 6 | 39 | 9 |
| Women's | 8 | 41 | 11 |
| Men's | 6 | 40 | 7 |
| Men's | 9 | 43 | 10 |
| Men's | 10 | 44 | 11 |
| Men's | 11 | 45 | 12 |
| Men's | 12 | 46 | 13 |
Here is the check on a pair of Speed labels for the same women's EUR 39. Both look like Balenciaga labels, with the same layout, the same typeface and the same wording. Only the numbers differ.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Women's EUR 39 | UK 6, USA 9 | UK 7, USA 9 on the fake above |
| Gap between UK and USA | 3 on women's pairs, 1 on men's pairs | 2, for example UK 10, EUR 42, USA 12 |
| Half sizes | Whole UK sizes on adult pairs | UK 8.5 with EUR 43 and USA 9, or USA 7.5 with UK 7 |
| Label layout and typeface | Even type, MADE IN ITALY on Speed | Often identical, which is why the numbers matter |
The same applies on men's pairs. The genuine label below reads UK 9, EUR 43, USA 10. The counterfeit one reads UK 10, EUR 42, USA 12, which no men's or women's row produces.

The arithmetic is the same on the Triple S. The genuine men's Triple S label below, for EUR 45, reads UK 11 and USA 12.

The label also prints a Japanese size. We have not confirmed that column against Balenciaga's own size chart (we could not reach it, and a generic retailer chart is not good enough), so we do not use JP as evidence either way.
Red flag
A size row where the numbers disagree: a UK size ending in .5 on an adult tag, or a USA number that is neither 3 above the UK number (women's) nor 1 above it (men's). We have not seen this on a genuine tag, so a row that breaks the conversion is enough to treat the pair as counterfeit.
Worth knowing
This check is one-directional. Most fake labels print a row that is consistent, so a correct row proves nothing about the pair. Also read the digits carefully before you decide: wear and cracked print can make a 6 look like an 8, and a kids' label with size ranges follows different rules.
The Track Tongue Label
This check applies to the Track only. On a genuine Track the label inside the tongue is a Balenciaga label: the website at the top, then MADE IN CHINA and an ART NO. (542023 on the original Track), then the UK, EUR, USA and JP rows beside small icons.

On a few fake Tracks we have seen something else sitting where that label belongs: a generic shoe label that starts with "MADE IN VIETNAM", lists US, UK, EUR and CM across the top, and has a barcode with a "PAT.US4817307" line under it.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Label heading | WWW.BALENCIAGA.COM | MADE IN VIETNAM |
| Size columns | UK, EUR, USA, JP rows beside icons | US, UK, EUR, CM across the top |
| Article line | ART NO. 542023 on the original Track | A barcode and a PAT. patent number |
| Look | A Balenciaga label with its own layout | A generic factory shoe label |
Red flag
A Track whose tongue carries a generic barcode label with a PAT.US4817307 line instead of the Balenciaga label. We have seen this on fake Tracks and not on genuine ones, so treat it as counterfeit.
Worth knowing
This is rare, and the evidence is thin. Most fake Tracks print a proper-looking Balenciaga label, so a normal label settles nothing. The Speed and Triple S labels have their own layouts, so do not expect the Track layout there.
What Genuine Pairs Look Like: Logo, Sole and Labels
These are the details counterfeiters copy best. Use them to check that a pair is the right model and well made, not to decide that it is real. A sloppy copy is a warning, and a good one tells you nothing.
The heel of a Speed carries BALENCIAGA embossed into the sole. It is on genuine pairs, and fakes reproduce it.

The Track has a "track" plate on the heel and the Triple S has a "triple s" patch on the tongue. Both are on genuine pairs and on fakes.

Kids' pairs carry a label with size ranges and MADE IN SERBIA. We have seen that label on fake kids' pairs too.

Worth knowing
Everything in this section appears on fakes we have reviewed. Matching these details is necessary but not sufficient. If one is badly copied, take it as a warning. If every one matches, you have not learned whether the pair is genuine.
What Does Not Work as a Tell
Several details that appear in sneaker guides are present on both genuine and counterfeit pairs in our review, so they should not change your mind either way:
- The size label heat-printed or transferred onto the Speed knit appears on genuine pairs too.
- The country on the label. Italy, China, Vietnam and Serbia all appear on labels we have seen, and fakes print all of them, so the country decides nothing on its own.
- The logo font on the knit, the heel and the outsole. It is copied closely.
- The ART NO. line, the "MADE IN ITALY" wording and the WWW.BALENCIAGA.COM line.
- The Japanese size column, for the reason given above.
- Wear, dirt and yellowing of the sole, which genuine pairs show too.
Balenciaga clothing uses a different set of labels, covered in our Balenciaga clothing label guide. If you are weighing up a Balenciaga bag as well, the City bag guide covers the checks that do separate bags. For another sneaker brand where fakes also copy most of the visible markings, see our Dior sneakers guide.
What the Box, Dust Bag and Tags Do and Do Not Prove
Packaging is context, not evidence. Boxes, dust bags and hang tags are all copied, and a pair that arrives with a convincing box has proved nothing. The one useful job for the box is cross-referencing: the size on the box label should match the size on the shoe and on the tag inside it. A mismatch between the box and the shoe is a reason to ask more questions.
Quick Checklist Before You Buy
- Identify the model: Speed, Track or Triple S, and whether the pair is men's, women's or kids'.
- Ask for a sharp photo of the inside label and read UK, EUR and USA.
- Check the arithmetic: women's UK is EUR minus 33 and USA is EUR minus 30; men's UK is EUR minus 34 and USA is EUR minus 33.
- Reject any adult row with a half UK size or a UK and USA gap that is neither 3 nor 1.
- On a Track, check that the tongue carries the Balenciaga label and not a generic barcode label.
- Compare the logo, sole and heel details against the genuine photos above, and treat a sloppy copy as a warning, not a tell.
- Do not treat any label, country or packaging detail as proof.
A row that breaks the conversion, or a generic barcode label on a Track, is a reason to walk away. A pair that passes everything here is still unproven.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
The honest answer for Balenciaga sneakers is that a good fake and a genuine pair share almost everything a buyer can photograph. The size-row check catches some counterfeits and clears none of them, and most fakes get past it. A pair that passes every check in this guide still needs a closer look, and that matters most on Speed and Triple S pairs, where the visible markings are the easiest to copy.
If you are buying second-hand, or already own a pair and want to be sure, submit photos for a professional authentication. An authenticator compares the label, the sole, the stitching, the knit and the construction against genuine references at full resolution, and you receive a Certificate of Authenticity with the result.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the labels, stitching, sole and box of your Balenciaga against verified references, from $15. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
Authenticate My Balenciaga →FAQ
How can I tell if my Balenciaga Speed sneakers are real?
Start with the size label inside the collar. Check that the UK, EUR and USA numbers agree with each other: on a women's pair the UK is the EUR size minus 33 and the USA is the EUR size minus 30, and on a men's pair the UK is the EUR size minus 34 and the USA is the EUR size minus 33. A row that breaks this is a strong fake sign. A correct row does not prove the pair is real, because most fakes print consistent rows, so combine it with other checks or submit photos for review.
Which size is Balenciaga EUR 39 in UK and US?
On a genuine women's pair, EUR 39 is UK 6 and USA 9. On a genuine men's pair, EUR 39 would be UK 5 and USA 6. This is what the genuine pairs in our archive show, not a published Balenciaga chart.
Does the "MADE IN ITALY" label prove Balenciaga sneakers are real?
No. Genuine Speed pairs carry it, but fakes print the same words in a near-identical layout. The numbers on the label are more useful than the wording.
What does the label inside a Balenciaga Track tongue look like?
The genuine label shows WWW.BALENCIAGA.COM at the top, MADE IN CHINA and an ART NO. (542023 on the original Track), then UK, EUR, USA and JP rows beside small icons. A generic barcode label reading MADE IN VIETNAM with a PAT. line instead is a counterfeit sign we have seen on fake Tracks.
Is the Japanese size on a Balenciaga label a reliable check?
We do not use it. We have not been able to confirm the Japanese column against a Balenciaga size chart, so this guide relies only on the UK, EUR and USA numbers.
Do fake Balenciaga Triple S sneakers have the wrong size row too?
Some do, but many fakes print a correct row. The size arithmetic holds on genuine Triple S labels, so a row that breaks it is a fake sign there as well, but a correct row proves nothing.
Can LuxeDetect authenticate Balenciaga sneakers from photos?
Yes. Submit photos of the inside label, the heel, the sole, the tongue and the overall pair, and an expert reviews them against genuine references. See the link above to start an order.
