How to Authenticate Paul Smith: Labels, Stripe and Signature Logo

Paul Smith puts one script signature on belts, insoles, soles, tags and eyewear, and a multi-coloured stripe on linings and bags. Here is what genuine examples in our records show, and why a matching mark proves little on its own.

What Genuine Paul Smith Looks Like Across Different Products

Paul Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970 and showed his first menswear collection in Paris in 1976. Today the name sits on shoes, belts, bags, shirts, tailoring and eyewear, and a genuine item can carry very different labels depending on which product and which line it belongs to.

Two things recur across our authenticated Paul Smith records. The first is the handwritten-style "Paul Smith" signature, engraved, stamped, printed or woven depending on the product. The second is colour: a multi-coloured stripe on linings and cuffs, and the swirling stripe print on bags. Both are easy to copy, which is the main point of this guide. They tell you what a genuine item looks like, not that yours is genuine.

Worth knowing

This guide is built from verified authentic Paul Smith examples across shoes, accessories, bags and clothing. We don't yet have confirmed counterfeit Paul Smith items that differ visibly from genuine ones, so we are not publishing red flags or a real-vs-fake comparison. When a verified difference turns up, this guide will be upgraded. Until then, use it to learn what genuine marks look like, and remember that fakes can copy every one of them.

The signature is the mark you see most. On the belt in our records it is split across the hardware: "Paul" is engraved on the buckle and "Smith" on the loop that holds the strap end, both in the same handwritten style, with purple stitching where the strap folds around the buckle.

The underside of that belt carries a stamp with the script name above "MADE IN ENGLAND", beside the words "REAL LEATHER" and the size. We mention the country only because it is printed on this belt; other genuine items in our records were made elsewhere, so a country is never a tell.

Shoes: Insole and Sole Stamps

On the dress shoes in our records, the signature is stamped in gold along the length of the black leather insole.

The soles carry the same signature pressed into the leather or rubber, with the size beside it on leather soles. Sneakers in our records show the signature in white on a black tab at the collar and embossed on the leather side panel.

Some genuine shoes in our records are plain on the outside and save the colour for the inside, so a quiet upper is not a concern.

The Multi-Coloured Stripe and the Swirl Print

The stripe turns up in places other than the obvious ones. On a genuine sneaker in our records the lining is a multi-coloured stripe, and a thin stripe runs along the side panel. On a tailored jacket in our records the sleeve cuff is lined with the same kind of stripe.

On bags, the same idea becomes a swirling stripe print. The bag in our records is a shoulder bag with the print across the body, navy leather edging and a small signature near the base.

The stripe colours and the print vary between items, and we have not tied a particular palette to a year or a line. A bright stripe proves nothing by itself: it is the first thing a counterfeiter copies.

Clothing Labels

Genuine clothing in our records uses more than one label system, so read the labels as a set.

  • Woven signature label. A cream label with the script "Paul Smith", stitched around its edge, is on the tailored jacket in our records.
  • Paul Smith LONDON labels. The shirt in our records has a black woven main label reading "Paul Smith LONDON" with "The Westbourne" beneath it, a separate black "Made in Italy" label above it, and buttons engraved "Paul Smith LONDON".
  • Care label. The jacket's care label gives the item name and a code line, the size, the fibre content in many languages, care symbols and a line beginning "Docket" followed by a number.

We read nothing into the "Docket" line or the code, and you should not lean on them either. A label that looks like this one is only a label that looks like this one.

Eyewear

Genuine glasses in our records carry text along the temples: a line with the model number, a colour code, the frame name and the size, and near the tip a "Hand Made in Italy" line with a CE mark.

The script name and the word "PEACE" also appear on the temple, near the hinge. Glasses and sunglasses are separate lines with their own text, so compare against a verified pair of the same model rather than against this one.

What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove

Every mark above is something a copy can reproduce: the script, the gold stamp, a woven label, a stripe, even a plausible care label. A match proves nothing on its own. A genuine item is the one where the marks, the materials and the construction fit together, which means checking the stamp against the leather it is pressed into, the label against the stitching around it, and the whole item against a verified pair of the same model. Weight, smell and the feel of the leather and fabric are checks made with the item in hand.

Equally, a difference from our examples does not make an item fake: Paul Smith has several lines (including PS by Paul Smith and a Jeans collection), and they do not all label the same way. Where an item is made also varies, and a country on the label is a plain fact of that item, not a verdict.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

If you are buying a Paul Smith item at a price that matters, or the listing does not show the inside, get a second opinion before you pay. LuxeDetect gives a verdict from a specialist, with a Certificate of Authenticity and a 24-hour turnaround option. Send clear photos of the whole item, the logo, every label with both sides visible, the lining, the sole or insole, and any hardware.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

Our authenticators check the labels, stitching and fabric of your Paul Smith against verified references, from $15. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.

FAQ

How can I tell if my Paul Smith item is real?

No single mark proves it. Check that the script signature, the labels, the stripe and the construction fit together on that specific item, and compare it with a verified item of the same type and line. Then get it checked if the purchase matters, because fakes can copy every mark in this guide.

Can I authenticate Paul Smith from photos?

Yes. What decides it is how the marks, materials and construction fit together against verified examples of the same item type. Clear photos of the logo, every label, the lining and the sole are what a specialist works from. For an expensive item a professional review is the safer route.

Does "Made in England" or "Made in Italy" on a Paul Smith label mean it is real?

No. Genuine items in our records were made in different countries depending on the product, and a country can be printed on a fake just as easily. Treat it as a plain fact about that item.

Is the multi-coloured stripe a sign of a genuine Paul Smith?

It is a Paul Smith signature detail, and genuine items in our records have it on linings, cuffs and bags. But it is also the first detail fakes copy, so a stripe on its own settles nothing.

What does "The Westbourne" on a Paul Smith shirt label mean?

On the shirt in our records it is printed under "Paul Smith LONDON" on the main woven label. We have not confirmed what it signifies and we do not use it to date or place a shirt.

Does every Paul Smith item have the same label?

No. Shoes, belts, bags, shirts, tailoring and eyewear are labelled differently, and the brand has several lines. This is why we compare an item against a verified one of the same kind and not against a single reference.

For other designer labels that are marked in different ways on different products, see our Ralph Lauren guide, Burberry clothing guide and Burberry belt guide.
