Why the Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 Is So Often Faked
The Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 by Virgil Abloh is one of the most talked-about sneakers of the 2020s, and "louis vuitton air force 1" is searched thousands of times a month. The two facts that drive the fakes are that the genuine pair was released in very small numbers and that it was expensive. Fake pairs sold as the real thing, and cheap pairs called "LV Air Force 1" with the Monogram pattern printed on a standard Air Force 1, are everywhere.
Our authentication records do not hold enough confirmed genuine and counterfeit pairs of this collaboration for a real-vs-fake comparison, so this guide does not list tells it could not back up. What it does is set out what the genuine release was, from public sources, and what you can check on your own pair. For Louis Vuitton in general, start with our guide on how to tell if a Louis Vuitton bag is real, and for Louis Vuitton footwear see the Louis Vuitton shoes guide.
Worth knowing
This guide is built from public sources about the genuine release. We have not confirmed a repeatable fake tell for this model, so nothing below is a "this proves it is fake" test.
What the Genuine Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 Was
There was never one Louis Vuitton Air Force 1. The public record shows several separate releases:
- The runway pairs. Virgil Abloh designed 47 pairs of the Air Force 1 for the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2022 men's show, according to Sotheby's.
- The Sotheby's auction. In early 2022 Sotheby's sold 200 pairs of a separate Air Force 1 design in sizes 5 to 18, with proceeds going to the Virgil Abloh "Post-Modern" Scholarship Fund. These came in an orange Taurillon Monogram leather pilot case made for the sale. Sotheby's states the show pieces were made by Louis Vuitton at its shoe manufacture in Fiesso d'Artico, Italy.
- The 2022 online release. Louis Vuitton later sold the Air Force 1 through a "digital drop" on 19 July 2022, with the Low at $2,750 and the Mid at $3,450 in the US, according to Complex. Reports at the time counted seven Low colourways and two Mid variations.
Which of these you are holding matters, because the materials, colours and packaging differ between them. A pair sold as "the Sotheby's pair" should come with the pilot case, and the case is part of what you are paying for.
What the Pair Is Built From
Sotheby's describes the design as Nike's Air Force 1 codes joined with the insignia and materials of Louis Vuitton, "styled with his signature quotation marks". Sotheby's does not itemise the materials of each pair. Because the pairs differ so much by release, the useful check is to match your exact pair, in colour, material and size run, to a photographed genuine pair of the same version, such as a Sotheby's lot page or Louis Vuitton's own listing.
The Louis Vuitton markings on shoes also have their own conventions, such as the stamps and codes covered in our shoes guide. We have not confirmed how those apply to this Nike collaboration, so we do not give a stamp format for it.
Price and Source: the Strongest Practical Check
Louis Vuitton priced its pairs at $2,750 to $3,450, and the auction pairs went far higher. A pair offered at a few hundred dollars, or "LV Air Force 1" listings with the Monogram printed on a standard Air Force 1, did not come from Louis Vuitton or Sotheby's. Where the pair came from is also checkable. Ask for the purchase receipt, the original Louis Vuitton box or the pilot case, and for pairs from the Sotheby's sale the lot details. An honest seller of a genuine pair can provide at least some of these.
Worth knowing
"Made in" lines are not a test. Fakes print a country on the shoe too, and we do not know which countries the genuine releases carry, so a country on its own tells you nothing either way.
Look-Alikes That Are Not This Shoe
- Louis Vuitton Trainer and other LV sneakers. These are different Louis Vuitton models, not collaborations with Nike.
- Customs. Air Force 1s covered in LV-pattern material by independent customisers exist. They are not Louis Vuitton products, whatever the listing says.
- Other Abloh pairs. The Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 and the Louis Vuitton one are different shoes. See our Off-White guide, and for Louis Vuitton collaborations outside footwear, the Supreme x Louis Vuitton hoodie guide.
What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove
Fakes of high-priced sneakers copy the visible marks: logos, text, packaging. A pair that matches a genuine one in every mark we can list proves nothing on its own, while a clear mismatch, such as a Monogram pattern that cannot be found on any Louis Vuitton release or a price far below Louis Vuitton's, is a reason to stop. The weight, the leather, the smell of the materials and the finishing are judged in hand, against a verified pair.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
This model sells for large sums and the genuine reference is small, so a second opinion is cheap by comparison. LuxeDetect authenticates Louis Vuitton items from photos, starting at $9 for a 24-hour check, with a Certificate of Authenticity for pieces that pass. Start an authentication with clear photos of the outer sides, the tongue and insole, the sole, any interior labels and the box or case.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the labels, stitching, sole and box of your Louis Vuitton against verified references, from $15. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
Authenticate My Louis Vuitton →FAQ
Is the Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 a real Nike collaboration?
Yes. It was designed by Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton and Nike. Sotheby's sold 200 pairs in early 2022, and Louis Vuitton released further pairs online on 19 July 2022.
How much did the Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 cost?
At the July 2022 online release the US prices reported by Complex were $2,750 for the Low and $3,450 for the Mid. Auction and resale prices were far higher.
How can I tell if my Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 is real?
Match your pair to a photographed genuine pair of the same version, check where it was bought and the original box or case, and treat a very low price as a stop sign. No single mark proves a pair genuine, because fakes copy the visible ones.
Can you authenticate a Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 from photos?
Yes. Clear photos of the sides, tongue, insole, sole, any labels and the packaging are what a check is based on, and the verdict rests on how all the marks and the construction fit together.
Is a Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 with "Made in China" fake?
Not on that line alone. We have not confirmed which countries the genuine releases carry, and fakes print countries too, so the made-in line is context, not a verdict.
