How to Authenticate Bottega Veneta Boots: Tire, Lug and Puddle Real vs Fake

Fake Bottega Veneta Tire and Lug boots copy the chunky silhouette well and slip on the lettering: extra words moulded into the Tire outsole, a gold-printed insole, a clumsy size stamp. This guide ranks those checks and shows what genuine Tire, Lug and Puddle boots look like.

Why Bottega Veneta Boots Are Judged by the Sole

The Tire, the Lug and the Puddle arrived around 2020 and quickly became some of the most copied footwear Bottega Veneta has made. All three are built around an oversized rubber sole, and that sole is the product: the leather upper of a Lug or a Tire is a fairly plain Chelsea boot, and the Puddle has no leather at all.

That is good news for counterfeiters and bad news for anyone judging a pair from listing photos. A rubber sole comes out of a mould, so a fake factory that owns a decent mould gets the silhouette, the colour and the tread right in one go. Across the boot orders in our archive, the fakes rarely looked wrong from the side. Where they slipped was the writing: what is moulded into the outsole, how the logo is applied to the insole, and how the size is stamped inside the heel.

So this guide is mostly about reading the boot. The checks below are ranked by how much each one actually settled on real orders. The strongest ones are specific to one model, so the first job is knowing which boot you are holding.

For bags and the interior tags that apply across the brand, see our Bottega Veneta authentication guide.

What to check, ranked by reliability

CheckpointReliabilityWhat it tells you
1. The Tire Outsole: Brand Name Only★★★★★A Tire outsole with MADE IN ITALY or a plain size number under the name does not match genuine pairs; a clean outsole does not clear the boot.
2. The Insole Logo: Pressed, Not Printed in Gold★★★★★Gold-printed insole lettering on a Tire or Lug is a warning sign; genuine logos are blind-pressed, but we saw it on few fakes.
3. The Size Stamp Inside the Heel★★★★★A misshapen or scratchy size numeral is worth a closer look, but wording varies and wear misleads.
Model Reference Before You Start★★★★★Tells a Tire from a Lug, which decides which outsole rule applies.
4. The Lug Sole: What Genuine Looks Like★★★★★Fakes copy the Lug outsole closely, so a match rules out only crude copies.
5. The Puddle Boot: A Reference, Not a Test★★★★★Good fake Puddles copy the tread layout, so it only catches pairs that get the layout wrong.
What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove★★★★★Packaging is context only; use it to spot contradictions, never as evidence.

Model Reference Before You Start

  • Tire: a leather Chelsea boot on a stacked sole with a wavy black rubber layer above a separate outsole. The outsole is often coloured (grass green, red, lime, pink, grey, translucent) and sometimes black. It comes as an ankle boot and a taller mid-calf boot. The Tire is by far the most faked of the three in what we see.
  • Lug: a leather Chelsea boot on a thick black lug sole with straight, flat sides: no wave, no coloured layer. Ankle and mid-calf heights.
  • Puddle: a one-piece moulded rubber ankle boot with a rounded toe, a wavy sole line and a criss-cross diamond tread. No leather upper.
  • Not covered here: Bottega Veneta's knee-high, riding, suede and heeled boots, and the heeled Flash boot, which sits on a sole that looks like a Tire but is a different shoe. Don't apply the Tire outsole rule below to a Flash.
  • Origin: every genuine pair in this guide reads "Made in Italy" somewhere. That tells you nothing on its own, because almost every fake prints it too.
Genuine Bottega Veneta Tire ankle boot with grass-green outsole: the wavy black layer above the outsole is what separates a Tire from a Lug.

The Tire Outsole: Brand Name Only

Turn a Tire over and look at the flat waist of the outsole, between the forefoot lugs and the heel block. On every genuine Tire we have checked, in every outsole colour, that panel carries one line: BOTTEGA VENETA. Some genuine pairs add a small metal disc with the size, but there is no "Made in Italy" line and no plain moulded size number on that panel.

Genuine Tire outsole in red: the waist panel carries the brand name alone, with no "Made in Italy" line and no size number.

Several fake Tires got this wrong in the same way: the mould adds MADE IN ITALY under the name, and on some a plain size number below that. It looks harmless, because the line is true for the Lug (see section 4), which is probably where the copyists borrowed it from.

Fake Tire boot with red outsole: "MADE IN ITALY" moulded under the brand name, a line the genuine Tire outsole does not carry.

Red flag

A Tire outsole that reads BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY, or carries a plain moulded size number under the name, does not match any genuine Tire we have seen. Check the boot is a Tire and not a Lug first: the Lug outsole does carry "Made in Italy".

Worth knowing

The reverse is not true. Many fake Tires copy the single-line outsole correctly, so a clean outsole does not clear the pair. The metal size disc proves nothing either way: it appears on genuine Tires and Lugs and on several fakes.

The Insole Logo: Pressed, Not Printed in Gold

Look down into the boot at the insole. On genuine Tires, Lugs and Puddles the BOTTEGA VENETA wordmark is pressed into the insole without colour: a blind deboss that you see as a shadow in the leather or rubber, either running along the length of the foot or across the heel.

Genuine Lug boot insole: BOTTEGA VENETA pressed into the brown leather without any ink or foil.

More than one fake pair, Tire-style and Lug boots among them, had the wordmark printed in gold on a black insole instead. It looks like a premium detail, but we have not seen it on a genuine Tire, Lug or Puddle.

Red flag

Gold-printed lettering on the insole of a Tire or Lug boot. Every genuine pair we have checked has a colourless pressed logo, but we saw gold printing on only a couple of fakes, so treat it as a strong warning and confirm with other checks.

Worth knowing

Insoles wear. A blind deboss can fade almost to nothing on a heavily worn genuine pair, so a faint logo is normal. What matters is that there was never ink or foil in it.

The Size Stamp Inside the Heel

Inside the back of the boot, on the leather lining of the heel counter, genuine Tires and Lugs carry a heat-stamped size. On most genuine pairs a MADE IN ITALY line sits under it, in small widely spaced capitals. The numerals are evenly pressed, upright and the same depth all the way through.

Genuine Lug boot heel lining: the size and MADE IN ITALY pressed cleanly and evenly into the leather.
Genuine Lug boot heel lining: the size and MADE IN ITALY pressed cleanly and evenly into the leather.

On some fakes the size is the giveaway: numerals that are misshapen, doubled or tilted, or so shallow and scratchy they look scored rather than pressed.

Fake Tire boot heel lining: a malformed, unevenly pressed size number with nothing under it.
Fake Tire boot heel lining: a malformed, unevenly pressed size number with nothing under it.

Worth knowing

Judge the quality of the stamp, not its wording. A genuine Lug pair in our archive had the half size stamped alone, with no "Made in Italy" line under it, so a missing line is not a tell. A crude or deformed numeral is worth a closer look, but this check is easy to misread on a worn lining and should never decide a pair by itself.

The Lug Sole: What Genuine Looks Like

The Lug outsole is where the Tire rule above stops working. A genuine Lug carries BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY moulded into the waist of the sole, with the name in a serif typeface and the second line in small spaced capitals. Many genuine Lugs also have a metal size disc set into the rubber above the text.

Fake Lugs we have seen copy this outsole closely, wording and disc included. We did not find a repeatable outsole difference on the Lug, so for this model the insole (section 2) and the size stamp (section 3) carry more weight than the sole.

Worth knowing

A Lug outsole that matches the genuine layout rules out only the crudest copies. Treat it as a box to tick, not as evidence.

The Puddle Boot: A Reference, Not a Test

The Puddle is the hardest of the three to judge from photos, because there is so little to read. A genuine Puddle has a diamond-grid tread with a raised, framed plaque reading BOTTEGA VENETA near the waist, MADE IN ITALY running diagonally inside one diamond of the heel, and the size moulded in the diamond next to it. The brand name is also pressed, without colour, into the footbed.

Genuine Puddle outsole: framed BOTTEGA VENETA plaque, MADE IN ITALY on the diagonal and the size in the neighbouring diamond.
Genuine Puddle outsole: framed BOTTEGA VENETA plaque, MADE IN ITALY on the diagonal and the size in the neighbouring diamond.

The fake Puddles in our archive reproduced that layout: plaque, diagonal "Made in Italy" and size all in the right places. The plaque lettering also varies between genuine pairs, so the typeface is not a safe test either.

Worth knowing

We have not found a Puddle detail that separates real from fake reliably in photos. Use this section to rule out a pair that gets the layout wrong, and get a professional opinion on any Puddle that matters to you.

What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove

Packaging is context, not evidence. Fake Bottega Veneta boots in our archive arrived in plain brown boxes with gold lettering and with printed box labels that looked right at a glance, because both are cheap to copy. A fake Lug pair came in a box whose label described a different product altogether.

The useful thing a box label can do is contradict the boots: a size, a colour or a product description that doesn't match what's inside is a reason to look harder. A label that matches proves nothing, and missing packaging is normal on resale pairs.

Quick Authentication Checklist

  • Identify the model: wavy layer above the outsole means Tire, flat-sided lug sole means Lug, one-piece rubber means Puddle.
  • On a Tire, read the outsole waist: the brand name alone (with or without a metal size disc) is right; an added "Made in Italy" or a plain size number is not.
  • Check the insole logo is pressed in without colour, never gold-printed.
  • Look at the size stamp inside the heel: clean, even numerals, usually with "Made in Italy" below.
  • On a Lug, confirm the outsole reads BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY, then rely on checks 3 and 4.
  • On a Puddle, check the plaque, diagonal "Made in Italy" and size layout, and treat a match as weak evidence.
  • Use the box only to look for contradictions.

A wrong Tire outsole or a gold-printed insole is enough on its own to walk away. If a pair passes every check, that means no fake tell turned up, not that the boots are proven genuine.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

These boots resell for a large share of their retail price, and the better fakes pass every check a buyer can make from listing photos, especially on the Lug and the Puddle. If the photos don't show the outsole, the insole and the inside of the heel clearly, ask for them before you pay.

FAQ

How can you tell if Bottega Veneta Tire boots are fake?

Start with the outsole. A genuine Tire reads BOTTEGA VENETA alone on the waist of the outsole, sometimes with a small metal size disc. Several fakes add "MADE IN ITALY" and a plain size number under the name. Then check that the insole logo is pressed in without colour rather than printed in gold.

Should a Bottega Veneta boot sole say "Made in Italy"?

It depends on the model. The genuine Lug outsole says BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY, and the genuine Puddle has "Made in Italy" on the diagonal of the tread. The genuine Tire outsole shows only the brand name. "Made in Italy" on a Tire outsole is a warning sign.

What is the difference between the Bottega Veneta Lug and Tire boots?

Both are leather Chelsea boots on a thick rubber sole. The Tire has a wavy black rubber layer above a separate, often coloured outsole; the Lug sits on a solid black lug sole with flat sides. The two outsoles are lettered differently, so identify the model before you check anything else.

Where is the size on Bottega Veneta boots?

On the Tire and the Lug the size is heat-stamped into the leather lining inside the back of the heel, usually with "Made in Italy" beneath it. Some pairs also have a metal size disc set into the outsole. On the Puddle the size is moulded into the tread near the heel.

Is a gold logo on the insole of Bottega Veneta boots normal?

Not on the Tire, Lug or Puddle. Genuine pairs of those boots have the wordmark pressed into the insole without colour. Gold-printed insole lettering showed up on more than one fake pair and on none of the genuine ones we checked.

Can you authenticate Bottega Veneta Puddle boots from photos?

Partly. You can rule out a pair whose outsole layout is wrong, but good fake Puddles copy the plaque, the "Made in Italy" line and the size placement accurately. For a Puddle a professional opinion is worth more than any single check in this guide.
