Why the Pouch Is Hard to Call From the Outside
The Bottega Veneta Pouch arrived in 2019 with Daniel Lee's first collection for the house and quickly became the clutch everyone recognised: a soft, gathered, cloud-shaped bag in buttery leather, with no logo anywhere on the outside. It was followed by the Mini Pouch on a thin crossbody strap, the Teen Pouch, the Chain Pouch on a heavy link chain, the Shoulder Pouch with a handle, and intrecciato woven versions of most of them.
That popularity made it one of the most copied Bottega designs, and the copies are good. Across the counterfeit Pouches that have come through our authentication queue, the factories got the silhouette, the gathers under the frame, the debossed "BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY" stamp and both fabric labels inside close enough that, photo for photo, they sit comfortably next to genuine bags. There is no external logo to misspell and no hardware plaque to get wrong.
Where several of them did slip was the small print on the Originality Certified tag sewn inside. That tag is a genuine Bottega Veneta feature, so its presence proves nothing, but its code and printing are where the fakes we have seen gave themselves away. This guide starts there, then covers the checks that are worth doing but rarely settle the question alone. If you are checking a different Bottega silhouette, the Bottega Veneta Cassette, Jodie and Sardine guides cover their own model-specific details. For the interior tags that apply to every Bottega bag, see our Bottega Veneta authentication guide.
What to check, ranked by reliability
| Checkpoint | Reliability | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The Originality Certified Tag: Read Every Character | ★★★★★ | The known recycled code B07797248C is a strong flag; most fakes carry a plausible code, so a clean tag proves nothing. |
| 2. The Interior Heat Stamp | ★★★★★ | Catches wrong wording or ink, but fakes copy the layout closely and genuine depth varies. |
| 3. The Frame, Hinges and Leather | ★★★★★ | Catches crude copies with stiff leather or glued seams; good fakes use similar hinges and linings. |
| Model Reference Before You Start | ★★★★★ | Makes sure you compare against the right version (Pouch, Mini, Teen, Chain, Shoulder). |
| What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove | ★★★★★ | Packaging is context only and never evidence. |

Model Reference Before You Start
Know which Pouch you are looking at before you compare it with anything, because the size and strap change between versions while the interior stays much the same.
- The Pouch: the original oversized clutch, smooth leather, no strap, carried under the arm.
- The Mini Pouch and Teen Pouch: smaller versions; the Mini carries a thin leather crossbody strap knotted at each end of the frame.
- The Chain Pouch: the Pouch body on a chunky metal link chain.
- The Shoulder Pouch: the gathered body with a leather shoulder handle.
- Intrecciato Pouch: any of the above in the house's woven leather instead of smooth nappa.
- Not the Pouch: the Body Pouch belt bag, flat zipped cosmetic pouches and the Knot clutch are different products. Listings often call any small Bottega bag a "pouch", so match the photos, not the title.
Genuine Pouches are made in Italy, and the interior stamp and label both say so. The genuine Pouches we have checked from recent production carry the same interior set: a debossed stamp below the frame, a white "BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY" label, and a white "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED" tag with a code.

The Originality Certified Tag: Read Every Character
Inside a genuine Pouch, sewn into an interior seam, you will find a small white woven tag printed "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED" in brown capitals, with a code underneath in dark grey or black. On the genuine Pouches we have read, the code is the letter B, eight digits and a closing letter, evenly spaced in a plain typeface. Next to it sits a second label reading "BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY".
This tag is real: genuine Pouches carry it, so its absence on a recent bag is a question to ask, not a point in the bag's favour. Counterfeiters know it is expected and sew one in, so what matters is what is printed on it.

A recycled code. The clearest pattern in our counterfeit Pouches is the same code, B07797248C, printed on three fakes in different colours: a black woven Pouch, a beige smooth Pouch and a burgundy one. We have not found this code on any genuine tag we could read. Counterfeiters copy codes from real bags, so this is a strong warning rather than proof, but a bag carrying it should be treated as a probable fake, however good the leather feels.

Print quality. Other fakes carried their own codes. One purple Pouch had a code printed in bright blue ink, and a few tags had smeared or ghosted print. The genuine tags we compared all used grey or dark brown-black ink, but this is a weaker signal than the recycled code: we saw it on very few bags, and photos can shift colour.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Tag present | Yes, white woven tag sewn into a lining seam | Usually yes; fakes copy it |
| Heading | "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED", brown | The same on the fakes we read |
| Code ink | Dark grey or black | Usually grey; bright blue on one bag |
| Code | Unique to the bag | B07797248C seen on three different fakes |
Red flag
An Originality Certified tag reading B07797248C. It appeared on several counterfeit Pouches in different colours and on none of the genuine tags we could read, so treat it as a strong sign of a fake and confirm with another check. A code printed in bright blue ink is worth a closer look too, but on its own it is a weaker signal.
Worth knowing
A clean tag does not clear the bag. Most of the counterfeit Pouches we have seen carried a correctly spelled tag with a plausible code in the right format. Bottega Veneta does not offer a public code lookup, so the code cannot be verified on its own.
The Interior Heat Stamp
Just below the frame on the inside wall, a genuine Pouch is debossed, without ink, with "BOTTEGA VENETA" in the house serif and "MADE IN ITALY" in smaller capitals underneath. The second line is widely letter-spaced. Depth varies with the leather: on thick, soft nappa the letters can look softened and slightly uneven, while on smoother or coloured leather they read sharper. The stamp is centred under the frame and sits level with it.
The counterfeits we have seen copied this well. Some fakes had a stamp that was heavier and more sharply cut than the genuine examples, or a "MADE IN ITALY" line set a little tighter, but genuine stamps vary enough in depth and spacing that we would not call a bag on either point. The section on the Sardine's stamp reaches the same conclusion for that model.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Blind deboss, no ink | Blind deboss, no ink |
| Wording | BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY | Same, copied closely |
| Second line | Small, widely spaced capitals | Sometimes set tighter |
| Depth | Varies with the leather | Sometimes heavier and sharper |
Worth knowing
Read the stamp for misspellings, missing lines or ink, which would be decisive. A stamp that is simply a bit deeper or tighter than a photo you found online is not, because genuine Pouches vary on both.
The white "BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY" fabric label next to the tag follows the same pattern: on genuine bags the "MADE IN ITALY" line is printed bolder than the brand name, and most fakes copied that too.

The Frame, Hinges and Leather
The Pouch closes with a rigid frame hidden inside a leather-covered tube along the top. The leather of the body is gathered under it in soft, rounded folds. At each end the two halves of the frame meet at a small metal barrel hinge, gold or silver to match the bag, which you only see when the bag is open. The lining is smooth leather, not fabric.
Check that the gathers are soft and irregular rather than pressed into identical pleats, that the frame tube is evenly covered with no glue at the seams, and that both hinges are the same tone and sit flush with the tube. Then handle the leather: a genuine Pouch is soft, heavy for its size and slouches when set down, while poor fakes feel thin or stiff and hold their shape.

| Element | Authentic | Counterfeit |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Rigid, covered in the body leather, clean seams | Usually similar; check for glue at the seams |
| Hinges | Small metal barrels, colour-matched | Usually similar barrels, occasionally a flat stud |
| Gathers | Soft, rounded, irregular | Sometimes stiffer or more uniform |
| Lining | Smooth leather | Smooth leather on the fakes we have seen |
Worth knowing
The fakes we have seen used similar barrel hinges and leather linings, so this section mostly catches the crude copies. Use it to support a verdict, not to make one.
What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove
Recent genuine Pouches come in a box and a cotton dust bag printed "BOTTEGA VENETA". Counterfeit sets come with matching boxes and dust bags too, including the bright green packaging Bottega has used in recent seasons, and genuine bags are often resold without any packaging at all.
Packaging is context, not evidence. Its only use is cross-checking: if a receipt, card or box label names a different colour or model from the bag in front of you, ask why.
Where This Guide Is Limited
This guide is built from genuine and counterfeit Pouches examined by our authenticators, not from a factory reference set. The tag tells above are the ones that repeated in our counterfeit examples; other factories will make other mistakes, and the best copies we have seen made none of them. Treat a clean result as "no known problem found", not as proof.
Quick Authentication Checklist
- Confirm the model (Pouch, Mini, Teen, Chain, Shoulder) and compare against a genuine reference of the same version.
- Find the Originality Certified tag and read every character: the heading, the ink colour, and the code itself.
- Look hard at any bag whose tag code is B07797248C, which has been found on several fakes.
- Check the heat stamp for the correct wording, no ink, and centring below the frame.
- Check the brand label: "MADE IN ITALY" printed bolder than the brand name.
- Open the bag: leather-covered frame, colour-matched barrel hinges, smooth leather lining.
- Handle the leather: soft, heavy for its size, slouching rather than stiff.
A recycled code on the tag is a strong warning that needs one more failing check to be sure, and odd ink is a reason to look harder. A Pouch that passes every check above can still be a good fake, which is why the next section matters.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
The Pouch is one of the hardest Bottega bags to call from photos, because the better fakes copy every visible feature closely. If a Pouch's tag is clean and the bag looks right but the price, the seller's story or the leather feels off, get a second opinion before money changes hands.
LuxeDetect authenticates Bottega Veneta handbags from $25 with a verdict in 24 hours and a Certificate of Authenticity for genuine items. Send a front and side view, the bag opened to show the frame and hinges, the heat stamp, and sharp close-ups of both fabric labels with the full code legible.
FAQ
Does a real Bottega Veneta Pouch have an "Originality Certified" tag?
Yes. Genuine Pouches from recent production carry a white woven tag printed "ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED" with a code, next to a "BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY" label. Counterfeiters copy it, so its presence does not prove the bag is genuine, but on a recent Pouch its absence is worth questioning.
Can I check a Bottega Veneta Pouch code online?
No. Bottega Veneta does not publish a lookup for the codes on its tags. What you can do is read the tag carefully: a code that is known to appear on fakes, such as B07797248C, marks the bag as counterfeit, and unusual ink or smeared print is a reason for a closer look.
Is B07797248C a real Bottega Veneta code?
We have seen B07797248C on several counterfeit Pouches of different colours, and not on any genuine tag we could read. Counterfeiters copy codes, so this is a warning rather than proof, but a Pouch carrying this code should be treated as a probable fake.
Where is the Bottega Veneta Pouch made?
In Italy. The interior heat stamp and the fabric brand label both read "MADE IN ITALY". Fakes print the same words, so the label confirms what the bag claims to be rather than proving it.
What is the difference between the Pouch, the Mini Pouch and the Teen Pouch?
They share the same gathered body, frame and interior labels, and differ in size and strap. The Pouch is the large strapless clutch; the Teen and Mini are smaller, and the Mini carries a thin knotted crossbody strap. The authentication checks in this guide apply to all of them.
Can a Bottega Veneta Pouch be authenticated from photos?
Often, yes, if the photos are sharp. The most useful shots are close-ups of both fabric labels with the full code readable, the heat stamp, and the bag opened to show the frame and hinges. Because the best fakes copy these features well, a professional check is worth it for any purchase you cannot return.
