Tory Burch Bags Real vs Fake: How to Spot a Fake Ella Tote and More (2026)

The tells that held up on Tory Burch bags are inside: a serif "Made in" ribbon with no code line, a QR code printed on a sewn-in label, and, on the Ella tote, a medallion held on with metal studs. Here is what genuine bags show, what the fakes got wrong, and why a correct label still clears nothing.

Why Tory Burch Bags Are Copied

Tory Burch bags sit where resale demand is high and the price is low enough to make copying worthwhile. The Ella tote, a nylon tote with patent trim and a large round Double T medallion on the front, is the bag most listings and most fakes revolve around, so it gets its own section below. The same label checks apply to the Fleming, Kira, Eleanor, McGraw and other handbag lines.

Most guides send you to the logo, the stitching and the zip pull. Good fakes copy those. The marks that gave fakes away on the pairs we examined are ones sellers rarely show: the small "Made in" ribbon sewn inside the bag, a QR code printed on an interior label, and, on the Ella, how the medallion is attached. Tory Burch has not published anything about how it labels its bags, so what follows is what we saw on genuine and fake bags, not a brand rule.

Two things to know first. These marks catch some fakes, not all: fakes also copy the genuine label format, and the last sections cover that. And this guide is about handbags. The Miller sandal has its own Tory Burch Miller sandals guide. We found no tell of its own for wallets, so we do not publish one.

What to check, ranked by reliability

CheckpointReliabilityWhat it tells you
3. Ella: The Medallion Is Built From Separate Pieces★★★★★On an Ella, a Double T and ring held on with metal studs was a fake pattern; the genuine medallion we examined is one disc with no studs.
1. A Serif "Made in" Ribbon With No Code Line★★★★★A strong red flag when present: serifs on this ribbon were on none of the genuine ones we examined. Its absence proves nothing, because better fakes copy the genuine sans label.
2. A QR Code Sewn Into the Bag★★★★★A QR code on a sewn-in fabric label appeared only on fakes; the only genuine QR code we saw was on the paper hang card.
4. A "检" Inspection Tag Left Inside★★★★★When present, a tag with the character 检 was on fakes only, but it is rare, so its absence tells you nothing.
5. A Black Multilingual PU or PVC Care Label★★★★★A black satin care label with PU or PVC wording was on fakes only; fakes also copy the white genuine care label.
6. An "OK." Stamp on the Magnetic Snap★★★★★Snaps stamped with "OK." codes were on fakes, but we compared few genuine snaps, so a code alone settles nothing.

Model Reference Before You Start

Compare a bag with the same line, not with "a Tory Burch".

  • Ella tote: nylon body, patent handles and corners, a round medallion with the Double T on the front. The only line this guide gives a model-specific tell for.
  • Fleming, Kira and Eleanor: quilted leather shoulder and top-handle bags with a metal Double T closure. Use the label checks only.
  • McGraw: a structured satchel. Use the label checks only.
  • Wallets: no separate tell. The interior label and care label checks apply to what the wallet carries inside.

The interior "Made in" label changes with the age of the bag. On the genuine bags we examined, older pieces carry a narrow white ribbon that reads only "MADE IN CHINA". Later bags carry a tag with a country, a style code and a month-year date, such as "HIR030 01-15" or "10005963 12-17". Recent bags often carry a "TBO" ribbon with the country. Every genuine label we could read was in a plain sans-serif typeface.

A Serif "Made in" Ribbon With No Code Line

This is a strong red flag when it is present, and it is easy to photograph. It does not show on every fake, so its absence proves nothing: the better fakes copy the genuine sans-serif label. Open the lining and find the small ribbon or tag sewn into a seam, then read only the "MADE IN CHINA" lettering.

What to look for. A narrow white "MADE IN CHINA" ribbon with no style code or date, printed in a Times-style serif font: small feet on the I and N, a thin left stroke and a thick right stroke in the A, and beaked ends on the C. Genuine ribbons use a plain, even-weight sans-serif font (Helvetica or Arial style: a round C with flat-cut ends, and an M and N without feet) and usually carry a code and a month-year line. A slanted or italic sans-serif is not serif, because genuine ribbons can slant. If you see serifs on this ribbon, treat it as a strong red flag.

Judge only the "MADE IN" ribbon. The TORY BURCH wordmark on the plaque or the lining has quirky flared letters, and it must not be judged for this.

Older genuine bags carry a narrower ribbon with the country only. The letters are still sans-serif.

Some fakes carry a narrow ribbon set in a Times-style serif typeface, with small feet on the letters, and nothing else: no style code and no month-year date. We saw this on fakes from 2020 through 2026, and we did not find it on a genuine bag.

Red flag

A "MADE IN CHINA" ribbon set in a serif typeface with no code line is a strong red flag when it is present. On the bags we examined, every genuine label was sans-serif, so serifs on this ribbon are a strong reason to stop and get the bag checked.

Its absence proves nothing. The better fakes carry the genuine sans-serif ribbon, and others carry a full modern label, so a plain sans label does not clear a bag. To check yours, ask the seller for a clear photo of the interior label with the whole ribbon in view, or take one yourself in daylight.

A QR Code Sewn Into the Bag

Look for a QR code printed on a fabric label inside the bag. On the fakes we saw, it usually sits beside a white woven Double T and "TORY BURCH" label, and sometimes carries a number such as "B81529-34". Fakes with this label appear from late 2023 onward.

A QR code is normal in one place: the paper "Empowering Women" hang card that comes on a new bag. That is a card on a string, not a label sewn into the bag.

Red flag

A QR code printed on a label sewn into the bag. On the genuine bags we examined, QR codes appeared only on the paper hang card, never on a sewn-in label.

Worth knowing

The fake codes we scanned opened a real Tory Burch site, so a scan that lands on the brand's page proves nothing. We rate this tell no higher than the ribbon because the label could copy one used on bags made for another market, and our records lean toward US purchases. If a bag you know is genuine carries one, that weakens this tell, and we would want to see it.

Ella: The Medallion Is Built From Separate Pieces

On the Ella tote, look closely at the round medallion. The genuine one is a single stitched or embossed patent disc with the Double T worked into it. There are no studs.

On the fakes with this tell, the Double T and the ring around it are cut as separate pieces and fixed to the nylon with metal studs.

Red flag

Metal studs holding the medallion pieces on an Ella. Every genuine Ella medallion we examined was one disc with no studs.

Worth knowing

This applies to the Ella only. Screws on a metal ring are normal on other Tory Burch lines, such as the Amanda. Good fakes also copy the embossed medallion, so a clean medallion proves nothing. Tory Burch's own Ella pages show only embossed or patch medallions, but we cannot rule out a genuine studded variant, so read this tell together with the label. For a check, send a clear straight-on front photo of the medallion and a close one of its edge.

Small Giveaways Inside the Bag

Three smaller marks turned up on fakes and never on the genuine bags we compared. They are rare, so absence tells you nothing.

A "检" Inspection Tag Left Inside

A small white tag with the Chinese character 检 (it means "inspect"), sometimes followed by a number, looks like a factory inspection mark. Fakes sometimes leave one sewn in.

Red flag

A tag with the character 检 inside the bag. We found none on the genuine bags we examined.

A Black Multilingual PU or PVC Care Label

A black satin care label printed "MADE IN CHINA / FABRIQUE EN CHINE / HECHO EN CHINA" together with "BOLSA 100% PU" or PVC showed up on fakes. Genuine care labels in our records are white and read "GENUINE LEATHER" with a style line and the RN number.

ElementGenuineFake
ColourWhiteBlack satin
Wording"Genuine leather", a style line and the RN number"Made in China" in three languages, with "BOLSA 100% PU" or PVC

Fakes also copy the white format, so a correct white care label clears nothing.

An "OK." Stamp on the Magnetic Snap

Worth knowing

Several fake bags had a magnetic snap stamped with a code beginning "OK." or "NOATD". The genuine snaps we compared were stamped "TORY BURCH NEW YORK", plain, or carried the supplier's name. We compared only a few genuine snaps, so a code on a snap is not a tell by itself. Treat only the specific "OK." codes as a reason to look harder.

What Is Not a Tell

These marks appear on genuine bags, and fakes copy them:

  • A large polished metal cut-out disc. Genuine Reva bags have one.
  • A geometric T jacquard lining. Seen on genuine bags.
  • An orange woven "CHINA" tag. Genuine bags carry it, and the fakes copy it.
  • A "TBO" ribbon with a country. Common on genuine bags.
  • The paper QR hang card. Normal on a new bag, and some fakes carry one too.
  • The country of manufacture. China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and India all occur on genuine bags. "Made in China" is never a reason to doubt a bag.

When Fakes Look Right

Some fakes copy the genuine label exactly. We saw fakes with a sans-serif ribbon and fakes with a full modern tag reading "MADE IN VIETNAM 10009171 12-20", the same wording we saw on genuine bags of that era. Fakes copy the genuine white care label too.

So read the ribbon, the medallion and the QR label as things that can condemn a bag, not as things that clear one. A bag that passes every check here has not been proven real. Compare it with a verified bag of the same line and era, and look at how the lining, hardware and stitching fit together. For other bag guides that handle the same problem, see our Longchamp Le Pliage guide and Coach bag guide.

Quick Authentication Checklist

  • Find the interior "Made in" ribbon. Serifs on it (feet on the I and N, beaked ends on the C) with no code line are a strong red flag. A plain sans ribbon proves nothing, because better fakes copy it.
  • Look for a QR code on a fabric label inside the bag. Only the paper hang card should carry one.
  • On an Ella, check that the medallion is one disc with no studs.
  • Look for a tag with the character 检 and a black multilingual care label.
  • Note an "OK." code on the snap, but do not rely on it alone.
  • Ignore the country, the polished cut-out disc, the T lining and the orange "CHINA" tag.
  • If every check passes and the price is still too good, get a professional opinion.

One serif ribbon, a sewn-in QR label or a studded Ella medallion is enough to walk away. A clean result is a good sign, not proof.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

A passing label does not clear a bag, because fakes copy the genuine format. If you are buying a Tory Burch bag at a price that matters, get a second opinion before you pay. LuxeDetect authenticates handbags from $25 with a 24-hour turnaround, a verdict from a specialist and a Certificate of Authenticity. Send clear photos of the front, the medallion or logo plate, the interior label with the whole ribbon in view, the lining and the hardware.

FAQ

How can I tell if my Tory Burch bag is real?

Check the interior "Made in" ribbon first. On the bags we examined, genuine labels were sans-serif, so a serif ribbon with no code line is a strong red flag when you see it. A plain sans ribbon proves nothing, because better fakes copy it. Then look for a QR code printed on a sewn-in label, and, on an Ella, for studs holding the medallion on. No single check proves a bag genuine, because fakes also copy the real label.

What should the "Made in" tag look like?

On the genuine bags we examined, it is a plain sans-serif label. Older bags carry a narrow ribbon with the country only. Later ones add a style code and a month-year date, such as "HIR030 01-15", and recent bags often carry a "TBO" ribbon with the country. Serifs on a ribbon with no code line (feet on the I and N, beaked ends on the C) are a strong red flag. Slanted sans-serif lettering is not serif, and a plain sans ribbon does not prove the bag is real.

Is a QR code inside a Tory Burch bag a bad sign?

A QR code printed on a fabric label sewn into the bag was a bad sign on the bags we examined. The genuine QR code we saw was on the paper "Empowering Women" hang card. A scan can still open the real Tory Burch site on a fake, so the scan result proves nothing either way.

Does a fake Ella tote have rivets on the logo?

Many do. On the fake Ellas with this tell, the Double T and the ring are separate pieces held on with visible metal studs. The genuine Ella medallion we examined is one stitched or embossed disc with no studs. Good fakes copy the embossed disc, so a clean medallion does not prove the bag is real.

Are Tory Burch bags made in China genuine?

Yes, many are. The genuine bags we examined were made in China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and India, so the country never settles it. What matters is the typeface and whether the label has a style code and date.

Does a correct style-code tag prove a bag is real?

No. Fakes also carry exact modern labels, such as "MADE IN VIETNAM 10009171 12-20", and copy the white care label. A correct label rules out one kind of fake, not all of them.

Is a paper QR hang tag normal?

Yes. A paper "Empowering Women" card with a QR code is normal on a new bag. Some fakes carry one too, so it neither clears nor condemns a bag. What counts is a QR code on a label sewn into the bag.

How do I check a Tory Burch wallet?

We found no tell that belongs to wallets alone, so we do not publish one. Send clear photos of the front, the logo hardware, the interior and every label for a verdict, and compare them with a verified wallet of the same style.
