How to Authenticate Dsquared2: Jeans, ICON Caps and Sneakers

Dsquared2 jeans, ICON caps and sneakers carry woven labels, care labels, hardware and a maple leaf that fakes copy. Here is what genuine labels and hardware look like in our records, and why a matching mark proves nothing on its own.

What Makes Dsquared2 Hard to Judge From One Mark

Dsquared2 was founded in Milan in 1995 by the Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, and it is known for distressed denim, logo-heavy casual wear, caps and sneakers. Its pieces are covered in marks: a woven waistband label, a red fly tab, an engraved button, a metal plaque on the back pocket, a care label, a hang tag, and a maple leaf that turns up on pockets and sneaker heels. That is a lot of detail to check, and it is also a lot of detail for a counterfeiter to copy.

Fakes copy these marks. A label that looks right, hardware that reads DSQUARED2 and a maple leaf in the right place each prove nothing on their own, so the marks have to be read together and compared against a verified pair of the same model. Weight, feel and the smell of the leather or denim are checks done with the item in hand.

Worth knowing

This guide is built from verified genuine Dsquared2 examples: jeans, ICON and patch caps, and sneakers. We do not yet have a set of confirmed counterfeit Dsquared2 pieces that differ visibly from genuine ones, so we are not publishing red flags or a real-vs-fake comparison. When a verified difference turns up, this guide will be upgraded. Until then, use it to learn what genuine labels, hardware and construction look like.

Dsquared2 Labels and the Staff International Era

Many genuine labels in our records name Staff International S.p.A. as the maker and distributor. Staff International was the company that produced and distributed the Dsquared2 line under licence, and Dsquared2 announced the end of that licence in March 2025, followed by a legal dispute reported by the trade press. We have not confirmed when the licence started, how the dispute ended, or what labels made after 2025 look like.

In practice that means a label naming Staff International belongs to the licence era, and a label that names something else is not suspect for that reason alone. We do not use any label wording to date a piece, and we do not call any one label format the genuine one.

Jeans: Waistband Label and Wash Label

On the newer slim jeans in our records, the inside of the waistband carries a black woven label with "DSQUARED2" in white and the size beneath it, with "MADE IN ITALY" printed small along the edge. Sewn in beside it is a long white wash label. It names Staff International, gives a style line that starts with "S74LA", a fabric code, a product description in English and Chinese, then "MADE IN ITALY" and "DSQUARED2" at the foot. A separate hang tag carries the model, fabric and colour codes and a barcode.

An older pair in our records shows the same idea in a different form: a black waistband label with "DSQUARED2" and a superscript 2, a white wash label with the care symbols and "MADE IN ITALY", and a second label headed "PRODOTTO DA: STAFF INTERNATIONAL S.P.A." with "COMM.", "MOD." and "TESS." lines. A third pair shows a white label with "DSQUARED2", the size and "MADE IN ITALY" printed on it.

We do not know how the Com., Mod. and Fab. codes are built. The date printed on one label looks like a season and year, but we have not confirmed that, so we do not use it to date a pair. These are the formats genuine pairs in our records show, not a code you can look up.

Jeans: Fly Tab, Button, Rivet and Back Patch

Genuine jeans in our records carry a red woven tab with "DSQUARED2" in white capitals at the fly, and a metal button with lettering engraved around its ring. On the newer pairs there is also a separate metal "DSQUARED2" plaque on the back pocket. Red maple leaf embroidery on a pocket appears on some pairs and not on others.

Genuine older Dsquared2 jeans: tan leather back patch stamped EXCLUSIVE CA. DSQUARED RUFF WORKWEAR INC. SINCE 1995 and IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE, with a stitched empty rectangle at its right

The older pair in our records has a tan leather patch at the back of the waistband instead, stamped "EXCLUSIVE CA. DSQUARED RUFF WORKWEAR INC. SINCE 1995" and "IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE...", with an empty stitched rectangle beside the text. The newer pairs do not have it, so a pair without a leather patch is not suspect for that reason alone.

"Made in Italy" is what the jeans in our records state, and we mention it as a plain fact of those pairs. It is not a test, and some other Dsquared2 pieces in our records state other countries.

Caps: ICON and Patch Caps

The genuine ICON caps in our records have the word "ICON" embroidered on the front and "DSQUARED2" on the back, in the cap's own colour or in contrast. Inside the band there is a black woven label reading "DSQUARED2" and a white label with the company name and a Milan address, a "MADE IN CHINA" block repeated in several languages, Chinese characters and "DSQUARED2" at the foot. A separate care label sits beside it, and on the caps in our records it carries a Japanese importer line.

Genuine older Dsquared2 ICON cap interior: black woven label reading DSQUARED2 ICON above a white label that names Staff International for the U.S.A., with Com. and Mod. lines, MADE IN ITALY and DSQUARED2

An older ICON cap in our records is different: the black label reads "DSQUARED2 ICON", and the white label names Staff International, says "FOR U.S.A. ONLY", gives Com. and Mod. lines and states "MADE IN ITALY". Two genuine caps from the same brand therefore show different labels and different countries, which is why origin is not a tell.

Patch caps in our records carry a woven badge on the front instead of the ICON lettering. The same label rules apply, and a badge that looks right is not a pass mark.

Sneakers: Heel Tab, Outsole, Insole and Box

The genuine Original Legend sneakers in our records have an embroidered red maple leaf on the heel tab, "DSQUARED2" moulded into the cream heel of the sole, a red maple leaf on the outsole and "DSQUARED2" with a small maple leaf printed on the tongue. Inside, the pair shows the name printed repeatedly on a textile layer under the insole and once on each insole. The leather lining carries a handwritten-style size and a "MADE IN ITALY" stamp. The box label gives the model name, a style code and a size, and a retailer sticker with a price sits on the box.

The sneaker details differ by model, so there is no single correct outsole or insole to match. Check what the model you hold is supposed to carry against a verified pair of that model.

What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove

Every mark in this guide can be copied, and the ones shown here are only what genuine Dsquared2 pieces in our records show. A matching label, a tab, a button and a maple leaf prove nothing on their own, because fakes copy marks. Matching every detail above does not prove a piece is genuine, and a different label does not prove it is fake: the brand has used too many formats, countries and licence-era labels for that.

Read the marks together: the labels, the hardware, the stitching, the denim or leather and the way the pieces fit. Weight and feel are checks done with the item in hand. Our Dsquared2 brand page lists what we need to see for an order.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

If you are buying Dsquared2 at a price that matters, or the listing does not show the inside labels, get a second opinion before you pay. LuxeDetect authenticates Dsquared2 jeans, caps and sneakers from photos with a 24-hour turnaround, a verdict from a specialist and a Certificate of Authenticity. Send clear photos of the front, the waistband and wash label or the inner cap labels, the fly tab and button, the back pocket and the heel, outsole and insole of sneakers.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

FAQ

How can I tell if my Dsquared2 jeans are real?

No single detail proves it. Genuine pairs in our records show a black woven waistband label, a red woven fly tab, an engraved button, a wash label and a hang tag, but fakes copy marks. Check that the labels, hardware and denim fit together on the pair, compare against a verified pair of the same model, and get it checked if the purchase matters.

Can I authenticate Dsquared2 from photos?

Yes. What decides it is how the labels, hardware, stitching and materials fit together against verified pairs of the same model. Send clear photos of the waistband label, wash label, fly tab, button, back pocket and any hang tag. On an expensive piece a professional review is the safer route.

Does Dsquared2 have a serial number?

We found no serial number on the genuine pieces in our records. The labels carry style, fabric and colour codes, often with a Com., Mod. or Fab. line, but we have not confirmed what they mean, so they are not codes you can verify.

Does "Made in China" or "Made in Italy" on my Dsquared2 cap mean it is fake?

No. Genuine caps in our records show both: a newer ICON cap states China and an older one states Italy. Genuine Dsquared2 pieces in our records show other countries too, so the country on its own is not a tell.

Can I date my Dsquared2 piece from its label?

We would not. A date printed on a label looks like a season and year, but we have not confirmed that, and the licence-era labels that name Staff International are only one group of labels. We do not date a piece from a label.

Is a Staff International label on my Dsquared2 a sign it is fake?

No. Staff International produced and distributed the line under licence, and Dsquared2 announced the end of that licence in March 2025. Genuine jeans and caps in our records carry its name. A label that names something else is not suspect on that basis alone.
