What Makes the Oh! Tote Worth Knowing Well

The Oh! Tote is Moynat's canvas shopper: an open tote in coated canvas printed with the house's interlocking "M" pattern, finished with leather handles, leather ring grommets where the handles meet the body and, on the "Ruban" versions, a vertical stripe with a round printed medallion. It's the brand's most accessible bag and the one most likely to turn up secondhand.

Moynat has published almost nothing about authenticating its canvas pieces, and it makes some of them in more than one country, which is where buyers go wrong. This guide shows what genuine Oh! Totes and related Moynat canvas totes look like in LuxeDetect's archive, then shows a counterfeit that copies them closely.

The Printed Canvas

The body is coated canvas printed with rows of Moynat's stylised "M", which interlock across the surface. We saw it in black and grey, brown and tan, navy and gold, and blue. On the genuine totes the pattern runs straight and even across each panel, and the coating shows a fine, regular texture up close.

The Ruban Stripe and Medallion

Ruban versions add a vertical stripe of three colors, such as orange, white and blue, or orange, yellow and silver, with a round printed medallion in the middle. The medallion shows a tall, condensed "MOYNAT" inside a ring that reads "MALLES ET OBJETS DE VOYAGE" across the top and "FONDÉE EN 1849 · PARIS" across the bottom.

On genuine totes the ring lettering is evenly spaced all the way round, and the medallion sits centered on the stripe. On the tote it's printed into the canvas, not a separate metal piece.

The Leather Label: France or Italy

Inside, a small rectangular leather label is stitched to the canvas lining. It reads "MOYNAT / PARIS" and then a line of origin, in foil. That last line catches buyers out: genuine Moynat canvas totes say either "MADE IN FRANCE" or "MADE IN ITALY".

In our sample, five genuine totes say France. Two say Italy: the M Collection tote and one Oh! Tote with the Ruban stripe. Moynat's leather bags, like the Réjane and Gabrielle, say France.

The Code Tab

Near the top edge of the lining, genuine totes carry a small leather tab heat-embossed with a code. The two we could read clearly are a letter followed by four digits: T2090 and T2010.

We only have two readable genuine codes, so we can't say this format always holds. Treat a very different format as a reason to look harder, not as proof on its own.

A Fake Oh! Tote That Copies the Details

Our one confirmed-fake Oh! Tote is a navy and gold GM with an orange, yellow and silver Ruban stripe. It came with a Moynat dust bag, cards and an envelope, laid out like a complete retail set.

Its medallion carries the right wording and layout. Its label reads "MOYNAT / PARIS / MADE IN ITALY", which, as shown above, a genuine tote can also say. Compared with the genuine labels, the fake's foil letters are larger and heavier, and the stitching around the edge is loose and wavy rather than close and even.

Its code tab reads "ID2022", which is two letters rather than the one letter we saw on genuine tabs. With only two genuine codes to compare, that's an observation, not a rule.

The canvas pattern and medallion are printed, and prints are the easiest part of a bag to copy.
