What Makes the Gabrielle Worth Knowing Well
The Gabrielle is Moynat's structured top-handle bag. It's easy to spot from across a room: a trapezoid body, a flap cut into a shallow point, and a polished two-part chevron clasp that forms the house's stylised "M". It comes in several sizes, from the small BB up, in both smooth and pebbled calfskin, with silver-tone or gold-tone hardware.
Like the rest of Moynat's line, the Gabrielle sells in small numbers, and almost nothing has been published about how to check one. We opened the full photo set of every Moynat record rather than trusting listing titles, since most are labeled only "Handbags - Moynat". Sixteen confirmed-authentic records turned out to be Gabrielles. The archive holds one confirmed-fake Gabrielle. One fake isn't a pattern we can turn into a comparison table, so this guide teaches genuine construction first and shows the fake as a warning. The Chevron Clasp
The Gabrielle's signature is its clasp. A wide, polished chevron plate is engraved "MOYNAT" along its left arm and "PARIS" along its right. A smaller V-shaped piece sits in the angle of the chevron, and together the two pieces make the "M" you see on the front of the closed bag. Two small rivet heads sit at the top of the plate, near its point.
On every genuine Gabrielle we reviewed, the engraving followed the curve of each arm, with even letter spacing and a clean edge. The hardware comes in silver tone and gold tone, and both are genuine. Match the finish to the rest of the bag's hardware rather than expecting one metal.
The Interior Stamp
Lift the flap and you'll find "MOYNAT / PARIS / MADE IN FRANCE" stamped in three centered lines on the leather just above the clasp plate. On the bags we reviewed it was a fine silver or gold foil, matching the hardware tone, with the three lines decreasing in size from top to bottom.

A correctly formatted stamp confirms the format, not the verdict. The wording and layout aren't secret, and the fake shown below copies the rest of the bag closely.
The Strap Clip
The detachable shoulder strap attaches with swivel clips engraved "MOYNAT" over a smaller "PARIS". The top of each clip is notched into a shallow "M" that echoes the front clasp. As with the clasp, the finish follows the bag's hardware.
Base Studs
The Gabrielle's base sits on square metal studs, and like the Moynat Réjane the number depends on the bag's size. Our largest example, a red pebbled-leather Gabrielle, has five: one at each corner and one in the center.
The smaller Gabrielles we reviewed have four, at the corners only. A missing center stud on a small Gabrielle is normal. Compare your bag against a genuine example of the same size.
Leather and Lining
Our sample split between two leathers. One is a fine, crosshatch-grained calfskin that holds sharp edges, seen on the powder, blush, coral, blue, turquoise and black bags. The other is a softer calfskin with a larger pebble, seen on the red, taupe and grey bags. Either way, the grain should look the same on every panel.
Lining color varies too. Many of the genuine bags have a peach or apricot leather lining, and others have a neutral beige-grey. So the lining color alone doesn't tell you much, in either direction.
A Fake Gabrielle That Passes These Checks
Our one confirmed-fake Gabrielle is a red pebbled-leather bag with gold-tone hardware. It came with a care booklet and Moynat-branded cards in a branded envelope, so it would look like a complete set in a listing photo.
Checked against the sections above, it matches. The chevron clasp is engraved MOYNAT on the left arm and PARIS on the right. The strap clips and buckle are engraved. The base has five studs, the same layout as our genuine red Gabrielle. Its lining is cream, which is lighter than the genuine bags we saw, but genuine lining colors vary too much for that to count.
Worth knowing
We're showing this bag as a warning, not a checklist. A good fake Gabrielle gets the clasp, the engraving and the stud layout right, and it can come with convincing packaging.
