Hermès Mini Kelly and Kelly Pochette Authentication Guide: What Genuine Looks Like

Why the Mini Sizes Need Their Own Guide

Most Kelly authentication advice is written for the 25 to 35 cm bags, and most of it transfers: the turn-lock plate, the padlock, the saddle stitching and the leather grain are covered in our main Hermès Kelly authentication guide, and exotic minis are covered in the exotic Birkin and Kelly guide. This guide covers only what changes when the bag shrinks to 20 cm or turns into a clutch.

Three things change. First, the name: "Mini Kelly" is used in listings for at least three different products, and Hermès's own receipts add to the confusion. Second, the stamps: on a bag this small the interior code sits tight against a seam in a space you can barely get a phone camera into, so it is the stamp most often missing from a listing. Third, the fakes: the Mini Kelly II and the Kelly Pochette sell on the resale market for well above their boutique price, and the counterfeits we see for them are rarely cheap copies. They arrive with dozens of close-up photos, engraved hardware, a stamped shoulder strap, and in one case a receipt.

Our own numbers are worth stating plainly. Of the 685 Mini Kelly, Kelly 20 and Kelly Pochette orders with a final verdict in our regular-leather Hermès archive, 18 were confirmed counterfeit, about 1 in 38. Across all regular-leather Hermès bags and wallets in the same archive it is about 1 in 16. So the minis are not the most faked Hermès we see. The problem is that the ones that are fake tend to be good.

Which Bag Is It? Mini Kelly II, Vintage Mini and Kelly Pochette

Confirm which product you are looking at before you check anything else. A listing that calls a bag "Mini Kelly" can mean any of these:

• Mini Kelly II (Kelly 20 Mini II). The current top-handle mini, 20 cm wide, built in Sellier construction (stitched on the outside, sharp edges). It has a top handle, a turn-lock closure, and a detachable shoulder strap with two clasps. Most "Kelly 20" orders in our archive are this bag.
• Vintage Mini Kelly. An earlier generation of 20 cm Kelly, found on vintage bags. It is a different bag with different proportions, and its value and checks follow vintage Kelly rules. If the stamp dates the bag well before the mid-2010s and the listing calls it a Mini II, the listing is wrong about something.
• Kelly Pochette. A clutch about 22 cm wide with a small top handle, a turn-lock and no shoulder strap. It is most often in Swift, with Epsom and exotics also made. A genuine Hermès boutique receipt in our archive lists it as "POCHETTE KELLYMINI", which explains much of the naming confusion.

Not covered here: the So Kelly (an unstructured shoulder bag with a different build), the Kelly Cut (a long flat clutch), and the Kelly wallets and Kelly To Go. They share the name and some hardware but not the construction this guide is about.

Proportions: What a Genuine 20 cm Kelly Looks Like

Shrinking a Kelly is not just scaling it down. On a genuine Mini Kelly II the flap, the closure strap and the turn-lock take up a much larger share of the front than on a Kelly 28, and the handle stands tall relative to the body. From the side, the body is a steep trapezoid with a narrow gusset and crisp, straight Sellier edges from the handle base to the feet.

What to look for in a front photo: the closure strap should run level across the front, the turn-lock should sit centred on it, and the two side straps (sangles) should enter their slots at the same height. On a bag this small, a few millimetres out of line is visible, and it is visible in a photo taken straight on at bag height. A photo taken from above, which flattens a mini's proportions, tells you very little.

The Kelly Pochette is a different shape again: a wide, shallow body with a flat base, a front flap that covers most of the face, and a short flat top handle. From the side it is a narrow wedge.

The Mini II Shoulder Strap and Its Clasps

The detachable shoulder strap is what turns the Mini Kelly II into a crossbody bag, and it carries two things worth photographing.

The underside of the strap is heat-stamped in one line, "HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE", in a foil that matches the hardware colour: gold on a gold-hardware bag, silver on palladium. On every genuine Mini II strap we checked the letters were even in weight and spacing and sat straight along the strap.

At each end is a clasp engraved "HERMÈS". On the gold-hardware clasps we photographed closely, the engraving sat on the flat face next to a small square hallmark.

Check that the clasps, the turn-lock, the plate and the feet are all the same metal colour. Mixed tones on one bag are a contradiction on any Kelly.

Stamps on a Small Bag: Where to Look

Genuine minis carry two separate marks, and on a small bag they are easy to confuse or miss.

The heat stamp. On the Mini Kelly II, "HERMÈS PARIS / MADE IN FRANCE" is stamped on the front of the body, under the flap, directly above the turn-lock base. You have to lift the flap to see it. Like the strap, the foil colour matches the hardware.

On the Kelly Pochette the heat stamp is inside the bag, in three stacked lines, "HERMÈS / PARIS / MADE IN FRANCE". The genuine Pochettes in our sample followed the same foil rule: silver on palladium hardware, gold on gold.

The date and craftsman stamp. This is a blind emboss (no foil) pressed into the interior leather. On every genuine Mini II and Pochette we checked for this guide, it sat right against a line of stitching, along the edge of an interior panel or next to a seam, not floating in the middle of a panel. On a 20 cm bag that edge is deep inside a narrow opening, so ask for a photo taken with a light shone in from the side. On recent production it is a longer alphanumeric code, as in the photos below.

What the stamp gives you is the production year, not the verdict. Run it through the Hermès Date Stamp Decoder and check that the year fits the story: a bag sold as a Mini II should not date from long before the Mini II existed, and a bag sold as "new, unworn" should not date from a decade ago without an explanation. Kelly Pochette Construction

The Pochette has no shoulder strap, so its closure is the main hardware to inspect. The turn-lock plate on the flap strap is engraved "-HERMÈS-PARIS-" running along the long side of the opening. On the gold-hardware Pochettes in our sample a small square hallmark sat at the end of the engraving.

The short top handle is fixed at each end by a leather tab that folds through a loop and is stitched down in a small pointed triangle on the flap. The back carries two stitched, tongue-shaped tabs near the top corners. On the genuine Pochettes we looked at, the handle tabs and the back tabs were symmetrical left to right, and the stitching around each point came to a clean tip.

Everything there about plate engraving and stitch quality applies to the Pochette at a smaller scale. Note that the Pochette does have a top handle, just a short, flat one, so the handle-attachment checks apply to it too.

What the Counterfeits in Our Archive Got Right

This section explains why there is no comparison table in this guide. Across the 17 confirmed counterfeit minis with usable photos:

• Several turn-lock plates we could read were engraved, including one with a small hallmark beside the engraving. The blank-plate tell from our main Kelly guide did not appear on any mini we reviewed.
• Every heat stamp we could read was correctly worded, in a foil colour that matched the hardware.
• Several Mini II fakes came with a heat-stamped detachable strap and matching clasps.
• Several were photographed like professional resale listings, with more than 100 photos each, box and dust bag, and one came with a printed Hermès-style receipt.

None of that makes these bags hard to authenticate. It means the checks that decide a mini are the ones a buyer cannot easily make from listing photos: leather feel and smell, stitch tension, the exact depth and edge quality of the embossing, and how the hardware moves and weighs in hand.

Packaging, Receipts and Price

The box, dust bag, strap pouch and receipt are context, not evidence. A receipt is useful only as a cross-reference: the product name, leather and colour on it should match the bag. A receipt that says "POCHETTE KELLYMINI" belongs with a Kelly Pochette, not a Mini Kelly II, and that mismatch is worth asking about.

Price is also context. Genuine Mini Kelly IIs and Kelly Pochettes are hard to buy at a boutique and sell on the resale market well above retail. A listing well below the going resale price is not automatically fake, but it is the single most common reason a buyer skips the checks above.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

For a Mini Kelly II or Kelly Pochette, get a second opinion before paying. The counterfeits we see for these two bags are made to pass a photo review by a buyer, and the tiny stamps and cramped interior make a clean set of photos harder to get than on a larger Kelly. Send straight-on front, side and back photos, the heat stamp, the interior code stamp lit from the side, the turn-lock plate, and for a Mini II both clasps and the strap underside.
