Why the Brillant Is Delvaux's Most-Copied Bag
The Brillant is Delvaux's signature top-handle bag: a rounded-trapezoid body, a flap that follows the body's curve, and a single distinctive piece of hardware, a D-shaped metal turn-lock, buckled through a leather loop at the centre of the flap. It's been in continuous production since 1958, it comes in a wide range of sizes from a Mini to a GM, and it's now recognisable enough that counterfeiters target it specifically. Model Reference Before You Start
- The Brillant comes in several sizes, most commonly Mini, PM, MM and GM, plus special editions in exotic leather or seasonal colourways. Size changes the stud count on the base and the scale of the D-buckle, not the fundamental construction.
- Toy Brillant is Delvaux's smallest size, sometimes sold as a bag charm rather than a functional bag; it carries the same D-buckle and stamp conventions as the full-size Brillant.
- Delvaux manufactures in France and Belgium. Genuine interior stamps read "DELVAUX BRUXELLES" over "Made in France" or "Made in Belgium." Neither location is a red flag on its own; both are normal for current and recent production.
- Delvaux does not issue a public authenticity card or serial database. There is an interior reference stamp on some bags, but it's for the house's own records, not something a buyer can verify against a public system.
The Interior Stamp: "Handmade" Is Never on a Genuine Brillant
This is the strongest single tell we found, and it came directly out of our own order archive rather than any outside source.
We reviewed every Delvaux record in LuxeDetect's photo archive that we could positively identify as a Brillant: over 90 confirmed-authentic examples and more than 40 confirmed-fake ones, across sizes, colours and leathers. On every genuine Brillant where the interior stamp was legible, it read "DELVAUX BRUXELLES" over "Made in France" or "Made in Belgium," nothing more. Not one said "Handmade."
On the fakes, roughly a fifth carried a third line reading "Handmade in France" or "Handmade in Belgium" underneath the DELVAUX BRUXELLES logo. That extra word never appeared on a single confirmed-genuine Brillant we could read clearly.

Red flag
A third stamp line reading "Handmade in France" or "Handmade in Belgium" underneath "DELVAUX BRUXELLES." We did not find this wording on any of the 90-plus genuine Brillants we could read clearly.
Worth knowing
This tell is scoped to the classic Brillant handbag specifically, not the whole Delvaux house. We also found "Handmade" stamps on a small number of genuine Delvaux items elsewhere in the archive: a round crossbody bag, a canvas tote, a bucket-style hobo, and two pieces of small leather goods (a coin purse and a flat D-buckle clutch). None of those are the classic Brillant silhouette this guide covers. If you're authenticating a Delvaux item that isn't a Brillant top-handle bag, don't apply this checkpoint; "Handmade" on those other shapes is not automatically a red flag. We also can't rule out a "Handmade" Brillant existing somewhere we haven't seen; roughly four-fifths of the fakes we reviewed did not use this wording, so a clean two-line stamp does not clear a bag on its own.
The D-Buckle and Hardware
The D-shaped turn-lock, and the smaller "D" motif on the shoulder strap tabs, is the house signature and the fakes' hardest element to get exactly right.
On a genuine Brillant, the buckle is a solid metal casting, substantial in the hand, with an even, flawless finish (gold, palladium, or a colour-matched tone on some editions) and smoothly rounded edges. It threads through a leather loop and sits with a firm, precise action, no play once buckled. Where the metal carries "DELVAUX" engraving (on the strap tabs and stud caps), the lettering is crisp, evenly weighted, and in the house's condensed serif.

Across the fakes we reviewed, hardware casting quality varied a lot. Several fakes had a D-buckle that felt and photographed convincingly close to genuine. Treat hardware as corroborating evidence, not a standalone test, and weigh it alongside the interior stamp.
Silhouette and Proportions
Delvaux shapes are precise, and mismatched proportions are one of the easier things to spot once you know what to look for.
The Brillant has a rounded-trapezoid body that's noticeably deeper at the base than at the top, a flap that follows that same curve rather than sitting flat or square, a rolled top handle, and the D-buckle centred on the flap. The bag should stand upright on its own without slumping.
This is where a well-made fake gives itself the least trouble. Several of the fakes we reviewed had accurate silhouettes and would pass on shape alone.

Silhouette is corroboration, not a decisive check on its own. The fake shown above gets the shape close enough that you'd need the stamp and hardware detail to catch it.
Leather and Stitching
The Brillant is most often seen in box calf (smooth, firm, a lustre that patinas with wear) or grained calf (a natural, irregular pebble grain). Whichever finish, genuine leather has an even, deep colour, a supple but structured hand, and a clean-cut edge. The saddle stitching should run even in length and tension along every seam, in a matte thread that's colour-matched or tonal to the leather.
Fakes we reviewed varied from convincing to obviously synthetic. A grain that repeats identically panel to panel, a plastic sheen, or stitching that wanders and loosens on curves are all worth a closer look, but we didn't find these consistently enough across the fake sample to call them decisive on their own; several fakes used leather close enough in hand-feel to pass a photo-only check.

What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove
A genuine Brillant typically comes with a Delvaux dust bag (cotton or linen, printed with the crowned "1829 DELVAUX" logo) and a rigid box. Several of the fakes in our archive also arrived with a Delvaux-branded dust bag and box, in some cases a close match to genuine packaging. Packaging is context, useful for cross-referencing a listing, never evidence on its own.
Delvaux does not issue a public authenticity card. A "Delvaux certificate of authenticity" card included with a resale purchase is not a genuine Delvaux document.
