Coccinelle Handbag Authentication Guide: What Genuine Looks Like

Coccinelle bags have carried woven labels, framed plates, pink satin tags and an enamel disc over the years, so no single mark settles whether one is real. Here is what genuine Coccinelle handbags in our records show, and what a matching mark does not prove.

Why No Single Mark Settles a Coccinelle Handbag

Coccinelle is an Italian leather goods brand, founded in Parma in 1978, and its name is the French word for ladybird. It sells structured and soft leather bags in seasonal colours, and the bags we have authenticated for buyers run from older pieces to current ones. That spread is the whole difficulty: an older bag and a recent one carry different interior tags, different logo plates and different hardware, and all of them can be genuine.

So there is no single mark to match. What follows is a record of what genuine Coccinelle handbags in our records show, sorted by mark. It is not the brand's own system, and we could not find any official explanation of what its interior tags mean. We use the format "what we see on genuine bags", never "how to decode a bag".

Worth knowing

This guide is built from genuine Coccinelle handbags that we have authenticated. We do not have enough confirmed counterfeit Coccinelle bags to compare against, and the few we have show plates and logos that look like the genuine ones. So we cannot point to a counterfeit tell here, and we do not claim one. Use the guide to learn what genuine pieces look like, and read the last two sections before you rely on any detail.

Older Bags: A Woven Label and a Framed Metal Plate

Many of the older genuine bags in our records, roughly the 2000s into the early 2010s, carry a small black or dark grey woven label sewn inside, with "COCCINELLE" above "Made in Italy" in light lettering.

On the genuine label above, the lettering is evenly woven and the label sits flat, stitched along its edge. The same era also shows an engraved metal plate set in a leather frame, usually on the lining.

Light scratches on the plate are ordinary wear on a used bag. Both marks are easy to reproduce, so treat them as the expected look of an older piece, not as proof.

Middle Years: "Styled in Italy" Over a "Codice Lavorazione" Tag

From about 2010 to 2017, the genuine bags in our records show a pair of woven tags sewn together: a black tag with "STYLED IN ITALY" and a country of manufacture, and a second tag reading "CODICE LAVORAZIONE" followed by a number.

The country on the first tag varies. We see China on many genuine bags, and Italy and Tunisia on others. "Made in China" is a genuine label on this brand and is never a reason to doubt a bag on its own. "Codice lavorazione" is Italian for a production or processing code. The number after "N°" differs from bag to bag in our records (we have seen single and double digits), and we have not confirmed what it stands for, so please do not read a date or a factory out of it.

Recent Bags: Pink Satin Tags and a Season Code

Bags from about 2018 on show pink satin tags in gold lettering. The "COD LAV" tag, short for the same production code, comes with a second tag that carries a short season-style code.

The tag in the photo shows "20P" over "E1FG05701". Other genuine bags in our records carry codes of a similar shape with a different two-digit prefix. We do not know what the prefix or the letters mean, and Coccinelle does not publish a guide to them, so we do not treat them as a season, a model or a date. The same tags also appear as a pink "MADE IN CHINA" tag on some bags and a pink "MADE IN ITALY" tag on others, and both turn up on genuine pieces.

The Round Enamel Disc and the "Authentic Italian Leather" Plaque

Several recent genuine bags have a round disc sewn or set into the lining, showing a small heart, "COCCINELLE" and "Authentic Italian Leather".

In our records the disc is also made in a plain "Made in Italy" version, and the same wording appears on a stitched pink leather patch.

We have only seen these on newer bags, but we cannot date the change precisely, so a bag without one is not suspect.

Engraved Hardware: Lobster Clasps and Turn-Locks

Genuine Coccinelle bags often put the name on the hardware as well. On chain-strap bags, the name is engraved around the face of the lobster clasp.

On flap bags, it appears in raised capitals on the turn-lock plate.

Check that the letters are crisp and evenly spaced, and that the finish matches the rest of the hardware. Expect plenty of variety: the clasp, the plate shape and the finish change from one model to the next. Some genuine bags also carry the name debossed into the leather or lining, with no metal at all.

The Interlocking-C Plate and the Dust Bag

Some genuine bags carry a small square plate holding an interlocking pair of C shapes, with "COCCINELLE" in gold below.

The same bag, shown in the cover photo, came with a cream cotton dust bag printed "COCCINELLE". Only a few of our genuine records include a dust bag, so its absence means nothing, and a printed dust bag is easy to buy separately.

What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove

Every mark in this guide can be copied, and good fakes copy marks. A matching mark proves nothing on its own: matching all of them does not prove a bag is genuine, and a missing or different one does not prove it is fake, because Coccinelle has used too many formats for that. Read this guide as a map of what to look at, not as a pass mark, and compare a bag against a verified genuine bag of the same model. Interior tags are also easy to move or cut out, and some genuine bags have no tag at all.

For comparison with other accessible-luxury bags, our Furla bag guide, Kate Spade handbag guide and DKNY handbag guide cover how those brands mark their bags.

When to Get a Professional Opinion

FAQ

How can I tell if my Coccinelle bag is real?

No single detail proves it. Genuine Coccinelle bags in our records show several different marks (a woven label, a framed plate, pink satin tags, an enamel disc, engraved hardware) depending on the bag's age. Check that the hardware, lining and tags fit together on the bag, and get it checked if the purchase matters, because good fakes copy marks.

What does "Codice Lavorazione N°" mean on a Coccinelle tag?

"Codice lavorazione" is Italian for a production or processing code, and "COD LAV" on the pink tags is short for it. The number varies from bag to bag in our records, and we have not confirmed what it stands for. It is not a serial number, and we do not read a date or factory out of it.

Does "Made in China" mean my Coccinelle bag is fake?

No. "Made in China" appears on many genuine Coccinelle bags, on both older woven tags and recent pink ones. Others in our records say Italy or Tunisia. The country alone never settles it.

Does Coccinelle have a serial number?

We have not found a serial number on genuine Coccinelle handbags. The tags carry a production code and, on recent bags, a short season-style code. We cannot say what these mean, and Coccinelle does not publish a decoder, so be wary of any site or seller that claims to decode them.

What is the "Authentic Italian Leather" disc?

It is a round enamel disc, with a small heart, sewn into the lining of several recent genuine bags. Some bags carry a leather patch with the same wording instead. We do not know when it was introduced, so an older bag without one is not suspect.

Is a Coccinelle bag without a dust bag fake?

No. Only a few of the genuine bags in our records came with a dust bag. A printed dust bag is easy to buy separately, so having one proves nothing either.

Should the Coccinelle name be on the hardware?

On many genuine bags it is, on lobster clasps, turn-locks or a small plate. The style differs from one model to another, so judge the quality of the engraving and finish against the rest of the bag, and remember that good fakes copy the name too.
