Is Neiman Marcus Legit? The Short Answer
Yes. Neiman Marcus is a legitimate luxury department store, and has been since 1907. You buy new merchandise from Neiman Marcus itself, either in its stores or on neimanmarcus.com, not from third-party sellers as on a resale marketplace. The news you may have seen is about ownership, not authenticity: Neiman Marcus was bought by Saks Global in December 2024, Saks Global went through Chapter 11 in 2026, and it came out as Exemplar Luxury Group. This review reflects public filings and coverage as we read them at the time of writing (October 2026).
Who Owns Neiman Marcus
Herbert Marcus, Carrie Marcus Neiman and Abraham Lincoln Neiman opened the first store in Dallas on September 10, 1907. The ownership story since then, in short:
- 1987 to 2024: the stores were run by Neiman Marcus Group, which also owned Bergdorf Goodman.
- 2014 to 2020: Neiman Marcus Group owned the German online retailer Mytheresa (see our Mytheresa review).
- May 2020: Neiman Marcus Group filed for Chapter 11 and came out of it at the end of September 2020.
- December 2024: Saks Global, the owner of Saks Fifth Avenue, completed its $2.7 billion purchase of Neiman Marcus Group.
- January 2026: Saks Global filed for Chapter 11, citing debt from the Neiman Marcus deal.
- June 2026: it left bankruptcy and renamed itself Exemplar Luxury Group (ELG). Existing equity was wiped out, and the new board includes representatives of the investment firms Pentwater Capital Management and Bracebridge Capital.
ELG is now the parent of Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. As of June 2026, Neiman Marcus ran 33 stores in 15 US states. Some locations closed during the restructuring, including the downtown Dallas flagship on September 30, 2026.
Does the Bankruptcy Make Neiman Marcus Less Legit?
No. A restructuring changes who owns a company and how much debt it carries; it does not change where a department store's merchandise comes from. What it can change is the practical detail: store locations, loyalty programs and policies. If you shop during or after a restructuring, read the current terms on the official site rather than relying on what you remember or what a coupon site says.
Where Neiman Marcus's Stock Comes From
Neiman Marcus sells new luxury apparel, accessories, jewelry, beauty and home products as a retailer. It is not a peer-to-peer marketplace where strangers list goods, so there is no authentication step between seller and buyer, because the store is the seller. Pre-owned goods are a separate business: in 2019 Neiman Marcus took a minority stake in the resale site Fashionphile (see our Fashionphile review).
Returns
Neiman Marcus publishes its return policy in the customer-service section of neimanmarcus.com. We could not load that page for this review, so we do not quote a return window here. Before you buy, check three things on the official page: the number of days you have, whether a mailed return costs you anything, and the rules for sale and final-sale items. Third-party summaries of the policy disagree with each other, which is a good reason to read the original.
Buying From the Philippines or Elsewhere Outside the US
Neiman Marcus is a US chain: all its stores are in the United States. If you order online from abroad, check at checkout whether your country is offered, what currency you pay in, and whether duties and taxes are included or charged on delivery. A return from abroad usually costs more and takes longer, so be surer of size and fit before you order.
How to Make Sure You Are on the Real Neiman Marcus
Fake shops sometimes borrow the names of well-known stores, and real news of store closures makes a "closing sale" story easy to tell. Before you pay:
- Type the address yourself. The official site is neimanmarcus.com. Be wary of look-alike domains with extra words, hyphens or unusual endings.
- Distrust prices far below every other retailer, especially on current-season pieces from houses that rarely discount.
- Pay with a credit card or another method with buyer protection, never by bank transfer, gift card or crypto.
If you already bought a designer item from a site you are not sure about, an independent check gives you evidence for a refund or card dispute.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction against verified references. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.

Did Neiman Marcus go bankrupt?
Its parent did. Saks Global, which owned Neiman Marcus, filed for Chapter 11 in January 2026 and emerged in June 2026 as Exemplar Luxury Group, with some stores closed. Neiman Marcus Group itself had also been through Chapter 11 in 2020. The stores and website kept operating.
Does Neiman Marcus sell fake designer items?
Neiman Marcus is a department store that sells new merchandise as the retailer, not a marketplace where private sellers list goods. We found no report of it selling counterfeits in the sources we checked. The real risk for shoppers is copycat websites using its name, so check that you are on neimanmarcus.com before you pay.
What is Neiman Marcus's return policy?
It is published on neimanmarcus.com. We could not load the page for this review, so check the return window, any fee for mailed returns and the rules for sale items there before buying.
