Every authentic Cleo we reviewed carries the exterior triangle plaque in a single enamel tone that matches the bag's hardware: plain silver or gunmetal lettering on a black background for silver-hardware bags, gold lettering on a matching gold-hardware bag. The "PRADA," "MILANO," "DAL 1913," and the small crest are all rendered in that one metal tone, with no additional color anywhere on the plaque.
In our fake sample, four separate counterfeit records (all black bags) showed the plaque outline, "PRADA MILANO" lettering, and the "DAL 1913" ribbon rendered with a visible red or burgundy tint layered under or around the silver, most obvious along the letter edges and the ribbon border. We did not see this on any of the authentic plaques we reviewed, across roughly fifteen separate authentic photos spanning black, white, and lilac bags. It's worth being precise about what this catches: it was present on about a quarter of the counterfeit plaques in our sample, not all of them, so its absence doesn't clear a bag on its own, but its presence is decisive.

Red flag
A red or burgundy tint anywhere on the triangle plaque's lettering or ribbon border, on a bag whose hardware is otherwise silver, is not something we found on any authentic Cleo in our sample and is enough on its own to reject the bag. This tint was specific to the exterior plaque in every case we found. The interior rectangular tag (see checkpoint 2) did not show it on the same bags, so don't extend this check to the interior tag.
The Interior Tag: Engraving and Finish
The interior tag is a small metal rectangle reading "PRADA" and "MADE IN ITALY," set into the lining above or beside the magnetic closure snap. In our sample, this tag was well-executed on both authentic and counterfeit bags more often than not: engraving depth, font, and finish were broadly comparable across most of the pairs we compared side by side.
One supporting detail worth noting: on two of the counterfeit records we reviewed, the interior tag still had its factory protective film attached, a thin clear adhesive layer with a visible peel tab and specular sheen across the tag face. We didn't see this on the authentic tags we photographed. It's a genuinely useful secondary signal, but treat it as supporting, not decisive, since a legitimate reseller could plausibly leave a film on a new bag too, and its absence proves nothing either way.

Don't rely on this checkpoint alone. In our sample, several counterfeit interior tags were essentially indistinguishable from authentic ones at photo resolution. Use it to add weight to the plaque-color check above, not to replace it.
The Half-Moon Silhouette and Top-Strap Construction
The Cleo's defining shape is the curved half-moon body and the exposed top edge that runs in one continuous stitched curve from strap to strap, with the triangle plaque mounted just below that top seam. The curved strap connects via a small rectangular metal loop stamped "PRADA," usually in a bright silver or gold finish.
In our sample, this was the hardest checkpoint to use as a standalone test. Overall silhouette proportions, the curve of the top edge, and the strap-loop hardware (including its own small "PRADA" engraving) were closely matched between authentic and counterfeit bags in most of the pairs we compared. We could not identify a repeatable proportion or stitching difference sharp enough to state as a rule.

Authentic Cleo bags are lined in a black jacquard fabric woven with a repeating pattern of rope-motif borders and a small "PRADA" wordmark worked into the weave, visible as a subtle tone-on-tone texture rather than a printed logo.
This was another checkpoint where the counterfeits in our sample were, frankly, good. The lining pattern, weave density, and wordmark legibility were closely matched between authentic and counterfeit bags across the pairs we compared. We're noting it here because it's a real, photographable feature of the bag that's worth knowing about, but we can't responsibly present it as a reliable authenticity test based on what we found.
