What Makes the Cahier Distinctive

The Cahier ("notebook" in French) is one of Prada's more architecturally complex leather bags: a rigid trunk-shaped body with cast metal corner brackets, a front buckle plate styled after an old book clasp, and a structured top strap that reads like a book's spine, stitched to the body rather than looped through a simple ring. It comes in Saffiano and smooth calf leather, in dozens of colorways, and in several special-edition hardware treatments (an astrology motif with stars and a crescent moon, a lion-head door-knocker clasp on the "Cahier Lion," among others). That corner hardware and the buckle plate are exactly what a counterfeiter has to tool separately from the leather cutting and stitching, which is usually where the real gap between genuine and convincing-fake shows up on a trunk-style bag like this.

We pulled every Cahier-tagged record from LuxeDetect's own Prada authentication archive to see if that gap actually shows up in our data. It's a thin sample on the fake side: 19 confirmed-authentic Cahier orders against only 3 confirmed-fake ones. Three fakes is not enough to responsibly publish a checkpoint table or call any single detail a decisive, repeatable tell — a pattern seen on one fake could be a real manufacturing-batch quirk of that specific counterfeiter, not something true of Cahier fakes in general. Rather than force a comparison our data can't support, this guide documents what verified-genuine Cahier construction, hardware, and stamping actually look like across a wide spread of colorways and hardware variants, so you know what to check your own bag against.

Bag Reference Before You Start

• The classic Cahier Shoulder Bag pairs a Saffiano-leather top panel with a smooth calf lower body (or an all-smooth-calf or all-Saffiano construction, depending on season), brass or gunmetal corner brackets, and a front buckle plate stamped "PRADA" in small type inside the hardware itself.
• A Cahier Belt Bag, Mini Crossbody, and clutch-sized variants share the same buckle plate and corner-bracket hardware at a smaller scale.
• Special editions carry additional decorative hardware on top of the standard corners and buckle: the Astrology edition adds applied gold stars, a comet trail, and a crescent moon to the front panel; the Cahier Lion replaces the buckle plate with a lion-head door-knocker clasp. Don't expect these to match a plain Saffiano listing photo for photo — confirm you're comparing the same special edition, not just the same brand.
• Genuine Cahier bags are made in Italy. The interior nameplate and any authenticity card should read "PRADA / MADE IN ITALY."
• The strap mounts to the body via a stitched leather tab at the spine, held by a rounded brass rivet through a gold-trimmed keeper bracket, not a simple metal ring.

The Buckle Plate and Corner Hardware

The front buckle plate is the bag's signature detail: two ornate cross-shaped brass mounting plates on either side of a straight center bar, with a small hook-shaped tab stitched beneath it that loops the flap strap through. Across every genuine example we reviewed, the mounting plates carry a fine brushed or lightly antiqued brass finish with crisp, undamaged edges on the decorative scalloped cutouts, and a small "PRADA" wordmark engraved in the lower right of the plate in a modest, evenly weighted font.

The trunk corners follow the same finish: brass (or gunmetal, on black-hardware colorways) angle brackets wrap each bottom corner and the top spine ends, fixed with domed rivets, with the bracket's inner edge sitting flush against the leather rather than gapping or overlapping unevenly.

The Interior Nameplate and Size Tag

Every genuine bag in our sample carries a small rectangular metal plate reading "PRADA" and "MADE IN ITALY" set into the interior lining, usually just below the flap's magnetic closure or centered above the main compartment opening. The engraving is crisp and evenly deep-stamped, in a gold or silver finish matching the bag's other hardware, mounted square to the seam with no visible glue or adhesive residue at its edges.

A separate small size tag (reading a two-digit number like "25" or "59," Prada's internal size code, not a US or EU size) sits tucked just beside or behind the nameplate, inside the same interior seam. In every genuine example we photographed, this tag is present and legible at close range, though it can be small and easy to miss in a quick listing photo.

The Spine Strap Mount

The Cahier's structured top strap connects to the body through a stitched leather tab at each end of the spine, held down by a domed rivet through a shaped brass (or gunmetal) keeper bracket, echoing an old book's binding. On every genuine bag we reviewed, this tab is cut and stitched with a tight, even seam, the rivet sits centered in the bracket with no play, and the bracket's finish matches the corner hardware exactly in tone and texture.

Saffiano Cross-Hatch and Smooth Calf Finish

The classic Cahier mixes two leathers on most colorways: a Saffiano cross-hatch textured panel across the top of the flap and body, and a smooth calf lower panel and strap. On genuine bags, the Saffiano texture is a fine, even diamond cross-hatch with consistent depth across the whole panel, and the transition seam between the two leathers is straight and cleanly top-stitched. The smooth calf panel takes a visible sheen under direct light without looking plasticky.

Some seasons run an all-Saffiano or all-smooth-calf construction instead of the mixed panel; the Cahier Diagramme and several belt-bag colorways in our sample used a single leather throughout. Don't treat the two-leather mix as a universal rule, confirm it against the specific colorway and season you're checking. What the Box and Dust Bag Do and Do Not Prove

Genuine Cahier bags typically ship in a Prada dust bag printed with the brand's oval rope-knot crest, sometimes with an authenticity card. As with every Prada leather good, packaging travels separately from bags far more often than buyers assume, and generic Prada packaging is not hard for a reseller to source independently. Treat the dust bag and card as context to cross-reference against the bag's own hardware and stamping, never as proof on their own.
