Three Loewe Bags, Three Different Construction Problems
The Loewe Puzzle is the bag most people picture when they think of Jonathan Anderson's Loewe, but the Hammock, the Gate and the Flamenco are models that turn up often in resale. They share a house vocabulary: a blind-embossed Anagram, a "LOEWE / Made in Spain" stamp inside, small square Anagram plates, and very little exterior branding. They differ in how they are built, and that decides where you should look.
The Hammock is a structured, two-handled bag with a drawcord side and a zip, lined in a woven herringbone fabric. The Gate is a small saddle-shaped flap bag closed by a knotted leather tie with metal tips, lined in suede. The Flamenco is a soft, knotted pouch in thin nappa leather, lined in suede in recent years and in fabric on older examples.
Worth knowing
This is a genuine-reference guide. It describes what authentic Hammock, Gate and Flamenco bags look like in the photographs we have reviewed, and it says plainly where those photographs stop being useful. We have also seen counterfeit examples of all three models, and in photographs they reproduce the stamp, the embossing and the engraved hardware closely. We have not found a tell that repeats across fakes and is absent from genuine bags, so this guide does not rank checks or call anything a red flag. It can be upgraded to a full comparison if a repeatable tell emerges.
The Hammock

The Hammock's character comes from its seams: panels of leather meet along a zip that runs down one side, the handles are set into stitched loops, and the body folds into a soft hammock shape rather than a rigid box. Colour-blocked and two-tone versions are normal for the model, so a body in two leathers is not unusual.
The interior stamp. On the genuine bags we reviewed, the stamp is a leather patch sewn into the top of the inside, sitting against a herringbone-woven lining. "LOEWE" is blind-embossed into the patch in clean, evenly pressed capitals, with "Made in Spain" in small lower-case type beneath it. On several bags a short line of small type sits further down the patch; it is too small to read in most photos, so do not expect to verify it from a listing.

The Anagram plates. A small square metal Anagram plate sits on the shoulder strap on many of the bags we looked at, set flat into the leather with stitching running either side. The plate colour matches the hardware on the bag (gold-tone or silver-tone). A second, blind-embossed Anagram is pressed into the front panel near the base of the handles.

The base. Where the bag has metal pins in the base panel, they sit in the corners as small bars. We saw this on a few genuine examples; it is not on every Hammock, since the structure varies by size and season.

Zip and drawcord. The side zip has a leather pull and a metal slider. A few bags carry "LOEWE" lettering on a metal drawcord tip or zip tab. Treat these as things to compare, not as proof, since the same hardware is easy to copy.
The Gate

The Gate is a flap bag with a leather tie that wraps around the body and knots at the front. The leather is calfskin, smooth or grained depending on the version, with visible contrast stitching along the flap and the strap edges. Some versions use raffia, jacquard or canvas on the body, which changes the look but not the construction logic.
The lining stamp. Genuine Gates in our photographs are lined in suede, with "LOEWE" and "Made in Spain" pressed into the suede in a darker tone, often inside a stitched outline like a patch pocket. The lettering is evenly pressed, not printed.

The code line. On several genuine Gates, a short numeric code of six digits is pressed into the lining directly above "MADE IN SPAIN". It looks like a production reference. Loewe does not publish a way to decode it and we do not claim to, so use it only as a consistency check (the line is present, cleanly pressed, and positioned like the others you have seen). Counterfeits that copy the stamp usually copy this line as well.

The tie tips. The ends of the leather ties are capped with gold-tone metal cones engraved with "LOEWE". On the genuine bags we reviewed, the lettering is sharp and centred and the cone sits tight on the leather.

The flap emboss. A blind-embossed Anagram sits on the front of the flap, with a clean outline and even depth on smooth leather and a slightly softer edge on grained leather.

The Flamenco

The Flamenco is the softest of the three: thin nappa leather that slumps and wrinkles, a snap closure inside, and knotted leather details at the sides. It comes as a clutch, a drawstring pouch and a crossbody, so shape alone tells you little.
The embossed Anagram. A blind-embossed Anagram sits on the front. On thin nappa it presses in with soft, rounded edges.

Recent interiors. On the newer bags we reviewed, the interior is suede with a small leather label sewn in, in a colour that matches the exterior. "LOEWE" is embossed on it with "Made in Spain" beneath.

On several recent bags a short numeric code and "MADE IN SPAIN" are also pressed into the leather beside the suede. As with the Gate, we do not decode it.

Older interiors. Older Flamencos in our photographs have a printed fabric lining, a metal brand plaque and a zipped pocket instead of the suede and leather label. That is a different era, not a warning sign. Check the era of the bag (style, hardware and lining all move together) before you compare it with a recent photo.
Small Things That Travel With the Bag
- Dust bag and cards: Recent Loewe bags often come with a cotton dust bag and small cards printed with the Anagram. These are context, not evidence. They are easy to copy and easy to swap between bags.
- Leather and colour: Dye should be even and reach the edges. Scuffs on a used bag should show the same colour underneath.
- Hardware weight and plating: Check that the plating is even and the engraving crisp, and that gold-tone and silver-tone pieces do not mix on one bag.
- Stitching: Contrast stitching on the Gate and Hammock should be even in length and tension, with no wandering lines or loose ends.
What Photographs Cannot Prove
We have reviewed counterfeit Hammock, Gate and Flamenco bags, and in photographs they copy the visible things well: the stamp wording, the position of the Anagram, the engraved tie tips and even the code line. A buyer who checks only "is the stamp there and does it say Made in Spain?" will pass most fakes. What separates genuine from fake is what photographs flatten: the feel and weight of the leather, how the suede lining is cut and glued, how the knot sits and moves, and how the bag collapses when empty. That is why a hands-on examination matters more for these models than for bags with a more distinctive logo.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
If you are paying a resale price for a Hammock, Gate or Flamenco, a correct-looking stamp and Anagram are not enough on their own. An authenticator who compares your photos against many genuine examples of the same model and era can catch what a checklist cannot. LuxeDetect offers authentication with a Certificate of Authenticity from the order form.
FAQ
Where is the serial number on a Loewe Hammock, Gate or Flamenco?
There is no serial number in the Louis Vuitton or Chanel sense. Genuine bags carry a "LOEWE / Made in Spain" stamp inside, and many have a short numeric code pressed near it. Loewe does not publish how to decode that code, so it works as a consistency check only.
Is "Made in Spain" the only correct origin?
Every genuine Hammock, Gate and Flamenco where we could read the stamp said "Made in Spain". We have not verified every production line, so treat a different origin as a reason to ask questions rather than a verdict.
Do all genuine Loewe bags have an Anagram plate on the strap?
No. The square plate appears on the Hammock strap in many of our examples, but the Gate and Flamenco rely on the blind-embossed Anagram and engraved tie tips instead. Check the plate against the model and the year.
Can I authenticate a Loewe bag from the stamp alone?
No. Counterfeits copy the stamp, the embossing and the engraving closely. Use the stamp to confirm the wording and layout, then judge the leather, the lining and the construction.
Does this guide cover the Basket, Elephant, Squeeze or Cushion bags?
Not yet. This guide covers the Hammock, Gate and Flamenco, and the Puzzle has its own guide.
What colours do the Hammock, Gate and Flamenco come in?
Many, including colour-blocked and two-tone versions each season. A bright or unusual colourway is not a fake indicator in itself.
