Why the Le Cœur Is a Shape, Not a Pattern
The Le Cœur is Alaïa's heart-shaped bag. The brand's own product pages call it a "signature 3D heart-shaped bag": a small, sculpted heart with a zip along the top and an adjustable strap, worn on the shoulder or cross body. Retailer and press coverage places its first appearance in 2022, in the early collections of Pieter Mulier, whom Richemont (Alaïa's owner since 2007) named creative director in February 2021.
Buyers often search for the "Alaïa heart bag" and "laser-cut Alaïa" in the same breath, and the two get mixed up in listings. They are different things. The Le Cœur bags on the brand's site are solid leather, suede or haircalf hearts, some with embossed studs; none of the versions we found there is perforated. The laser-cut openwork people associate with Alaïa is the Vienne pattern, which the brand uses on other bags, such as the Mina, and on shoes. So the first check on a "laser-cut heart bag" is simple: find out exactly which product the seller is describing.
That is the angle of this guide. A Le Cœur is checked by its version: the material, the lining, the size and the reference the brand gives that version. A Vienne piece is checked by the pattern. A Le Cœur mule is checked by its heart toe. Each needs comparing with a genuine piece of the same version, not with "an Alaïa" in general.
Worth knowing
This is an authentic-reference guide. It is built from the brand's own product pages and from retailer listings, not from a set of authenticated and counterfeit Le Cœur bags, so it does not list fake tells we have not seen. When we have enough verified examples of both, we will upgrade it into a full real-vs-fake comparison.
Le Cœur Versions: What the Brand Publishes
When we opened maison-alaia.com in November 2026, the Le Cœur page listed five bags:
- Le Cœur Bi-Material Bag in Leather in Iris, China Blue and Lichen, $1,650.
- Le Cœur Bi-Material in Haircalf in Cherry, $2,100.
- Le Cœur Bag in Suede with Studs in black, $2,550.
The product pages give the same size for both versions we opened: L 21 x H 17 x D 5 cm, "suitable for a phone, wallet and Airpods", with a zip closure, an adjustable strap and "Made in Italy". The materials differ by version, and this is the detail most worth checking:
- Bi-material leather. A "mix of suede goatskin and shiny goatskin leather with natural subtle grain". The composition reads 100% goat leather, and the lining is goat leather too.
- Suede with studs. Calf suede with allover embossed studs, a lining in calf leather and an adjustable strap in smooth leather.
- Other versions. Retailers have sold the Le Cœur in buffed, grained, patent and metallic calfskin, and a 2022 edition sold by Gagosian was listed as calf leather with a lambskin lining.
Size figures vary between retailers (one gives a depth of 3 cm, another 7 cm), because they measure differently and because versions differ. A centimetre or two between a seller's tape and a product page is not a tell either way. A bag that is clearly a different size or proportion is a reason to ask which version it is.
Worth knowing
The lining is one of the most useful things to ask about. If a seller calls a bag the bi-material leather version, the brand describes a goat leather lining; if they call it the studded suede, a calf leather lining. A fabric lining on either would not match the brand's description of that version.
The Heart Shape and the Leather
The Le Cœur is a rigid, three-dimensional heart, not a flat bag cut in a heart outline; one retailer describes the patent version as "rigid patent calfskin". When you compare a bag with the brand's photos of the same version, look at:
- Symmetry. The two lobes should match, and the point should sit in the centre, with the zip running evenly along the top between them.
- Volume. The heart should hold its shape when the bag is set down empty. A bag that slumps, creases across the lobes or flattens at the point does not look like the brand's photos.
- The leather itself. Goatskin, calfskin, suede and haircalf each look and feel different. On a bi-material bag, look at where the suede meets the shiny leather: it is a join you can compare closely with the product photos.
This is a useful check but not a decisive one. A well-made copy can get the outline right, and genuine leather varies in grain and tone between bags. What makes it worth doing is that the shape, the materials and the join have to agree with each other and with one version.
The Zip, Strap and Hardware
The brand describes a zip closure and an adjustable strap on every Le Cœur page we opened. Some retailers describe a two-way zip and silver-tone hardware on the versions they sold. Check that:
- The zip runs smoothly along the top of the heart without catching where it follows the curve, and the pulls sit straight.
- The strap adjusts as described and its leather matches the version (smooth leather on the studded suede bag, for example).
- The hardware finish is the same on every metal part.
We could not confirm from the brand what is engraved on the Le Cœur's zip pulls or strap hardware, so we do not describe a mark to look for. Hardware is worth photographing close up for a professional review, but we do not rank it as a stand-alone test.
The Reference Code, the Interior Stamp and Chips
On the brand's site every Le Cœur we found has a reference beginning AA1P003, followed by a material code and a colour code. The Iris bi-material bag is AA1P003CA577-580, the studded suede bag AA1P003I281-999, and the Cherry haircalf is AA1P003I047 followed by the colour code 320. The pattern holds across other models: the haircalf Le Teckel bags also carry I047, and the black versions end in 999. That makes the reference a handy way to check a seller's description against the brand's catalogue: a listing that claims to be the haircalf Le Cœur should match the haircalf reference.
What we could not confirm is whether, or where, this reference is printed inside the bag. So it is a catalogue reference, not a serial number, and a code typed into a listing proves nothing about the bag in the photos. Codes are easy to copy; our guide on whether a serial number proves a bag is authentic explains why that is true of every brand.
The same caution applies to the inside of the bag. We could not verify from the brand how the Le Cœur's interior logo or label is made or placed, so we do not describe one. Photograph whatever mark is inside, and the lining around it, for comparison with a genuine bag of the same version. Some resellers say newer Alaïa pieces carry an embedded chip; we found nothing from the brand confirming this, so do not treat a chip, or the lack of one, as a test.
The Laser-Cut Vienne Pattern on Bags and Shoes
The brand describes Vienne as a pattern "inspired by lace and moucharabieh architectural openwork"; retailers call it laser-cut. It appears on bags such as the Mina and on shoes, including Vienne ballet flats and mules. It is a repeating pattern, and that is what makes it checkable: compare the piece with the brand's photos of the same model and look at:
- Continuity. The motif should run in a regular repeat across the panel. Look closely where the pattern meets a seam, a binding or an edge: on the brand's photos it stops cleanly, and a pattern that is cut through the middle of a motif in an odd place, or misaligned across a seam, does not match.
- The holes. Each opening should be complete and clean-edged, with no ragged or half-cut holes.
- The pair. On shoes, the pattern should sit the same way on the left and the right shoe.
Treat this as a useful comparison, not a verdict. Laser cutting is a machine process available to any workshop, so a clean pattern is not proof on its own. A messy one, set against genuine photos of the same model, is a strong reason to look harder.
Le Cœur Shoes: The Heart Toe
The Le Cœur name is also on shoes. Retailers have sold Le Cœur mules with a 90 mm heel in patent leather, and transparent versions with a clear PVC upper and a heart-shaped patent leather piece over the pointed toe. Listed compositions vary between versions (one lists calfskin and polyurethane with a lambskin lining), and the listings we saw state Made in Italy.
The same rule applies: identify the exact version, then compare. On a heart-toe mule, look at whether the heart is symmetrical and centred on the toe, whether the two shoes match, and how cleanly the patent leather meets the PVC. For Alaïa's crystal ballet flats, which have their own construction checks, see our Alaïa ballet flats guide; we do not repeat those checks here.
What the Dust Bag and Box Do and Do Not Prove
The brand's Le Cœur pages do not say what comes in the box, and we do not describe a genuine dust bag, box or card. Packaging is context, not evidence: it can be bought separately, reused from another item or printed. Its value is in cross-checking: a receipt from Alaïa or a known retailer, in the seller's name and with a date that fits the version, says more than any box.
What a Matching Mark Does and Does Not Prove
A heart that looks right, a reference that matches the catalogue or a dust bag with the right name is a reason to keep going, not a verdict. Fakes copy the details buyers check, so a single match proves nothing on its own; it is how the version, materials, lining, construction and paperwork fit together that decides it. Weight, stiffness and the feel of the leather are further points to compare against a verified bag. Our explainer on superfake designer bags is worth reading before you rely on any one detail.
Before you buy on resale, ask for:
- The whole bag from the front, back, sides and top, in daylight, set down empty.
- The zip and hardware up close, including the pulls and the strap fittings.
- The interior: the lining and any label or stamp, straight on.
- The join between materials on a bi-material bag, or the pattern edges on a Vienne piece.
- The paperwork: the receipt or order confirmation, and the version name or reference the seller is claiming.
Quick Authentication Checklist
- Identify the exact product: a solid Le Cœur heart bag, a Vienne laser-cut piece or a Le Cœur shoe.
- Match the version's material and lining to the brand's description.
- Compare the heart's symmetry and volume with the brand's photos of that version.
- Check the zip, strap and hardware finish for consistency.
- Treat the reference code as a catalogue check, not a serial number.
- On Vienne pieces, check the pattern's continuity at seams and edges.
- Weigh the purchase trail above the packaging.
When to Get a Professional Opinion
A Le Cœur costs well over a thousand dollars new, so an authentication is a small cost next to a wrong bag. LuxeDetect's handbag authentication starts at $25 for a 24-hour turnaround, and shoes from $15, with a verdict from a specialist and a Certificate of Authenticity. Send the photos listed above. Photos are enough for us to work from; the bag does not need to be sent anywhere.
A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.
Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction of your Alaïa against verified references, from $25. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
Authenticate My Alaïa →FAQ
How can I tell if my Alaïa Le Cœur bag is real?
Start with the version: the brand's pages give each Le Cœur a specific material, lining and size (L 21 x H 17 x D 5 cm on current versions). Then compare the heart's shape, the leather, the zip and the interior with genuine photos of that same version, and check the purchase trail. No single detail settles it.
Is the Alaïa heart bag laser-cut?
Not the Le Cœur versions we found on the brand's site: they are solid leather, suede or haircalf, some with embossed studs. Alaïa's laser-cut openwork is the Vienne pattern, used on other bags and on shoes. If a listing calls a heart bag laser-cut, ask exactly which product it is.
Does the Alaïa Le Cœur have a serial number?
The brand gives each version a reference starting AA1P003, followed by a material and colour code, but we could not confirm whether or where it is printed inside the bag. Use it to check a seller's description against the catalogue, not as proof: a code can be copied.
What is the lining of a real Alaïa Le Cœur?
It depends on the version. The brand lists a goat leather lining on the bi-material leather bag and a calf leather lining on the studded suede bag, and a 2022 edition was sold with a lambskin lining. Compare the lining with the version the seller claims.
Do Alaïa Le Cœur bags come with a dust bag and box?
The brand's product pages do not say, so we cannot tell you a bag without them is wrong. Packaging can be copied or reused, so treat it as context and give more weight to the receipt and the bag itself.
Can you authenticate an Alaïa heart bag from photos alone?
Yes. What decides it is how the shape, materials, lining, zip, interior and paperwork fit together, compared with genuine bags of the same version. Send clear photos of the whole bag, the zip and hardware, the interior and any receipt; for a bag that cost real money, a specialist review is the safer route.
Do the same checks work for Alaïa Le Cœur shoes?
The method is the same: identify the exact version, then compare it with genuine photos of that version. On a heart-toe mule that means the heart's symmetry, how the patent leather meets the upper and whether the pair matches.
