Hologram, RFID, or Neither — By Era
What should be on the tag depends on when the bag was made. Knowing the era stops you calling a genuine bag fake for missing a feature it never had.

The RFID chip is the check counterfeiters lose on
Many counterfeits reproduce the fabric tag convincingly and stitch in the same 8 digits, but there is no actual chip behind it — a visual copy of an RFID tag with nothing to read. Unlike the Louis Vuitton NFC chip, Fendi's RFID cannot be read with a phone: it needs the reader a Fendi boutique has. So if a seller of a post-2010 bag tells you the tag “scans fine on their phone,” that is not a thing Fendi's system does.

The card must match the bag
Where a bag still has its authenticity card, the serial on the card and the serial on the bag must be identical. A card that does not match its bag is one of the most common resale scams, and no format check can see it — which is why the tool above asks for both.

- Where is the serial number on a Fendi bag?
- On newer bags it is embossed on a rectangular leather tag sewn into the lining or a pocket seam. On older models it is printed inside the zip pocket, where it often fades. The format is alphanumeric and dash-separated, running roughly 15 to 17 characters once the dashes are ignored.
- What does 8BR mean in a Fendi serial number?
- 8BR is the art (style) code Fendi uses for leather goods, so seeing it in the serial is consistent with a handbag. It identifies the product category, not the production date.
- Do Fendi bags have an RFID tag?
- Bags made from early 2010 onward do. Fendi replaced the holographic foil sticker it had used since 2004 with an RFID chip embedded in the fabric tag, stitched with 8 digits, holding the model, serial, colour and the bag’s history. Bags made before 2004 have neither — just a serial.
- Can I scan a Fendi RFID tag with my phone?
- No. Unlike the Louis Vuitton NFC chip, Fendi’s RFID needs the dedicated reader a Fendi boutique has — a phone cannot read it. If a seller says the tag scans on their phone, that is not something Fendi’s system does.
- My Fendi has the tag but no chip inside. Is that bad?
- It is one of the clearest tells there is. Many counterfeits reproduce the fabric tag convincingly and stitch in the same 8 digits, but there is no actual chip behind it — a visual copy with nothing to read. On a bag made from 2010 onward, a tag that reads as empty is a serious red flag.
- Does the serial on the authenticity card have to match the bag?
- Yes. Where a bag still has its card, the two serials must be identical. A card that does not match its bag is one of the most common resale scams, and no format check can detect it — you have to compare the two numbers directly.
- Does a correct Fendi serial format prove the bag is real?
- No. Counterfeiters reproduce Fendi code formats accurately and many do. A correctly shaped serial is a floor, not a verdict. The FF pattern alignment, stitching, hardware and lining all have to agree as well.
