Arc'teryx's bird logo is named after Archaeopteryx, the transitional species between dinosaurs and birds. The story behind it, and why the logo matters for authentication.
Read GuideArc'teryx counterfeiting exploded once the brand became a streetwear name, and the fakes concentrate on the Beta and Alpha GORE-TEX shells. A replica can get the colourway and the cut close, but Arc'teryx build quality is genuinely hard to reproduce, so the tells are in construction rather than looks.
The checks that hold up: the Dead Bird logo — the number of feather segments, the taper of the wings and tail, and the embroidery or heat-transfer density have to be exact; the seam tape on the inside, which on a real shell is narrow (about 13mm), perfectly centered over every seam, and bonded with no lifting at the ends; the zippers, which are genuine branded units (typically WaterTight or RiRi/YKK Aquaguard) with the correct pull shape and smooth action; the interior labels and the care/spec tag, where fakes get the font, the model name, the size format or the country of origin wrong; and the GORE-TEX hangtag and its serial, plus the overall hand of the face fabric. Stitch density and the finish on the cuff adjusters and hem cord-locks are further giveaways.
Seam tape, logo geometry, zippers and labels all photograph clearly, so an Arc'teryx shell can be authenticated from detailed images. The guides below cover the Beta, Alpha and the most-faked pieces.
