Is Nordstrom Rack Legit?

Yes. Nordstrom Rack is legit: it is the off-price arm of Nordstrom, the Seattle department store founded in 1901, and not a separate reseller using the name. Nordstrom Rack's own FAQ says it "is part of Nordstrom, Inc." and has served customers since 1973. Its designer items come from the brands Nordstrom buys from and from Nordstrom's own clearance, which is the main reason buyers ask whether they are real.

What Nordstrom Rack Is

Nordstrom Rack began in 1973 as a clearance outlet in the basement of Nordstrom's downtown Seattle store. It now sells clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, beauty and home goods in stores and online at nordstromrack.com, with discounts the site puts at up to 70%. Nordstrom's last annual report as a public company listed 277 Nordstrom Rack stores as of February 1, 2025, plus two Last Chance clearance stores.

Nordstrom itself went private in May 2025. It is now owned by the Nordstrom family, which holds the controlling stake, and El Puerto de Liverpool, the Mexican department store group, which holds the rest.

Where Nordstrom Rack's Designer Stock Comes From

Nordstrom describes the Rack's sourcing in its annual report in one sentence: "Nordstrom Rack purchases merchandise from many of the same brands carried at Nordstrom and also serves as an outlet for clearance merchandise from the Nordstrom banner."

That gives two sources:

  • Buys from the brands. The Rack buys stock from brands Nordstrom already carries, for sale at off-price prices.
  • Clearance from Nordstrom. Items that did not sell at Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com move to the Rack.

Both are genuine product from the brand's own supply. Nordstrom does not publish how much of the Rack's stock comes from each, and the figures quoted online are old and disagree, so we do not repeat them.

Are Nordstrom Rack Designer Items Real?

A designer item bought new from Nordstrom Rack comes from the same brand supply as Nordstrom's, so there is no reason to treat Rack stock as suspect. What you should read carefully is the price tag. The Rack's FAQ explains that the "Comparable Value" shown next to the price is what the item, or a similar one, was offered for by Nordstrom or elsewhere, and that the figure may come from the manufacturer. In other words, the discount is measured against a comparable price, not always against a price that exact item was once sold at.

Two practical points:

  • Check the condition on arrival. If a designer item arrives with signs of wear, missing tags or packaging that does not match, return it rather than keep it.
  • The store's name does not travel. "Bought at Nordstrom Rack" says nothing about a listing on a resale app. A Rack receipt only covers the item it was issued for.

For bags and accessories from brands the Rack often carries, our Michael Kors bag guide and Kate Spade guide show what genuine looks like.

Nordstrom Rack Returns

At the time of writing (October 2026), Nordstrom Rack's shipping and return policy says:

  • 40 days for online and store purchases. Purchases made from October 5 to December 24, 2026 can be returned until January 18, 2027, or 40 days after purchase if that is later.
  • Free in store. Online and store purchases can be returned to any Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store. Store purchases cannot be returned by mail.
  • By mail, $9.95 per prepaid label is deducted from the refund.
  • Condition. You need the receipt, and items must be unused, unworn, unaltered and undamaged, with tags or original packaging where they apply. Beauty products must be unopened and can only go back in store.
  • Final Sale items cannot be returned or exchanged.
  • Designer items bought at Nordstrom (and fine jewelry) cannot be returned to a Rack store or by mail through the Rack.

If you doubt an item, act inside those 40 days. Our guide to getting a refund for a fake designer item covers card disputes if a return is refused.

Designer Brands at Department Stores: JCPenney and Others

At a department store, "is it real?" is usually less about counterfeits than about which line you are looking at. JCPenney is a useful example:

  • Who it is. JCPenney is an American department store chain founded in 1902 and based in Plano, Texas. Since January 2025 it has been part of Catalyst Brands, formed when JCPenney combined with SPARC Group; Catalyst is owned by Simon Property Group, Brookfield, Authentic Brands Group and Shein.
  • Brands inside the store. Sephora began running shops inside JCPenney stores in 2007.
  • Designer names made for the store. JCPenney has sold lines created for it by well-known designers, for example American Living, developed by Ralph Lauren in 2008, and a Halston line in 1983. A designer name on a department store line can mean a line made for that store, not the designer's main collection. That is a different product, not a fake.

The same check works for any department store: look up the brand's own website, and if it lists stockists, see whether the store is among them. For a new item bought from the store itself, that is usually all you need. For a resale listing that claims to come from one, check the item.

A code that checks out doesn't prove the item is real. Counterfeiters copy genuine codes.

Our authenticators check the stamps, hardware and construction against verified references. You get a verdict within 24 hours, and a Certificate of Authenticity if the item passes.
