Why Ray-Ban Is Faked More Than Any Other Eyewear
Ray-Ban is the world's best-selling sunglasses brand. The Wayfarer retails at $161; the Aviator at $153. Those prices are accessible enough that buyers don't think twice about resale offers at $40–80 — which is exactly where the counterfeit market operates.
1. The Lens Etching
Every authentic Ray-Ban lens is etched with "RB" in the upper corner of the right lens.
Authentic etching: Located at the top-right corner of the right lens when worn. Appears as a frosted or subtly embossed mark — not printed, not stickered. Visible when you tilt the lens at an angle to catch light.
Fake tells: Missing entirely (most common on cheap fakes). A sticker that peels off. Printed ink rather than etched. "RayBan" written in full instead of "RB."
2. The "Ray-Ban" Script on the Lens
Many models feature the "Ray-Ban" cursive script on the left lens.
Authentic logo: The script uses a specific hand-lettered typeface Ray-Ban has used for decades. The "R" has a specific loop; the "y" drops to a specific depth. Applied cleanly with no ink bleeding.
Fake tells: Wrong script — the "a" and "n" are most commonly misformed. Logo with visible ink bleed. Logo on the wrong lens.
3. Hinge Quality
Ray-Ban uses metal barrel hinges on all models.
Authentic hinges: Open and close with smooth, consistent resistance. The hinge barrel is clean and machined with no casting flash. The hinge pins are tight — no side-to-side wobble in the temple. Wayfarer models have a 7-barrel hinge — check all seven are present and aligned.
Fake tells: Loose or gritty hinges. Temple wobble. Casting flash or rough edges. Wrong barrel count.
4. Temple Arm Markings
On the inside of the temple arm, authentic Ray-Bans are marked with: "RAY-BAN," the model name, size (e.g. "50□18 135"), and "Made in Italy."
Authentic markings: Laser-engraved, clean, consistent depth, correct typeface.
Fake tells: Stamped markings with rough edges. "Made in China." Missing size information. Misspelled model name.
5. G-15 Lens Test
Classic Wayfarers and Aviators use G-15 lenses — proprietary gray-green glass. Glass will not scratch with a fingernail; polycarbonate will. G-15 lenses show the world in accurate color without yellow or brown cast.
Quick Authentication Checklist
- "RB" etching: upper-right corner of right lens, frosted, permanent
- "Ray-Ban" script: correct cursive typeface on left lens
- Hinges: smooth operation, no wobble, correct barrel count, no flash
- Temple markings: laser-engraved, "Made in Italy," model name, size code
- G-15 lenses: glass (won't scratch), subtle gray-green tint
FAQ
Are all current Ray-Bans made in Italy?
Yes. Since Luxottica acquired Ray-Ban in 1999, production moved to Italy. "Made in China" on a current piece is a fake indicator.
Do fake Ray-Bans protect against UV?
Most don't. Authentic Ray-Ban lenses are UV400 rated. Wearing fake sunglasses that dilate pupils without blocking UV can cause more damage than no sunglasses at all.
The "RB" etching is there but the glasses look cheap — can they still be fake?
Yes. High-quality fakes add the RB etching correctly. Always verify with multiple checks together.
